RE: question about overrides
If I'm writing a typical user manual, my preferred solution for pagination overrides is to float tables and figures. Floating rarely produces pagination problems--that's the main purpose of floating, as far as I can tell. I give tables and figures numbered titles and I'm careful to cite each one in the text, whether by Xref alone or with an explanation of their contents, so that the reader can find it (floating is an option for tables but not frames, so I put all graphics in tables). Some clients are uncomfortable with floating. They insist that the table or figure must appear directly before or after the text to which they refer, but I've never had a user complain about it. Floating moves the table only a page away. = Mike Bradley www.techpubs.com ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send list messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/archive%40mail-archive.com Send administrative questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit http://www.frameusers.com/ for more resources and info.
RE: Floating figures and tables was RE: question about overrides
Floating figures and tables are useful for automating page breaks, but I too have encountered people who insist that the figure must always immediately follow the reference. Can anyone help me understand where this rule originated? I don’t know where the rule came from. Probably from the same people who said there needs to be lots of white space. I generally follow the usual tech doc rules, but I know, too, that other kinds of publications don’t follow them at all and their readers do fine. There’s very little white space in books yet people have managed to learn from books for a few years. Magazines place illustrations every which where, but their readers manage to understand them. Newspapers and magazines even use, gasp!, multi-column layouts.

RE: How to automatically import index and cross-reference entries from Word 7 to FM 7.2 or 8?
You don't have to do anything. FM will pick them up. The Xrefs are no problem at all. They will be either of these Xref formats: Imported Format PageNum, Xref$pagenum Imported Format ParaText, Xref$paratext The index entries are a problem, but the solution is easy. For every index entry in the Word document, FM creates a separate Index marker. That's fine. But when it puts the markers in the FM file, it stacks them one on top of the other instead one after the other. As a result, when you view text symbols in FM, you see only one marker character. When you select it, you can select only the marker that's on top of the stack; finding and editing the markers under the top marker is a chore. For instance, suppose the Word doc has two index terms in a paragraph: {XE evaluation versions} {XE versions, evaluation}. FM would make two Index markers and stack them on one top of the other. You could select only the first entry's marker character when you viewed text symbols. The only way to find a particular marker in a stack of markers is to search for the marker text, if you know it, or locate the term in the index file and jump to it. My solution was to combine the stacked markers in the MIF file. It goes fairly quickly. The stacked markers appear next to each other in the MIF code and can be edited. For instance, this is the code for two stacked markers: Marker MType 2 MTypeName `Index' MText `evaluation versions' MCurrPage `1' Unique 998679 # end of Marker Marker MType 2 MTypeName `Index' MText `versions: evaluation' MCurrPage `1' Unique 998680 # end of Marker It can be edited to this: Marker MType 2 MTypeName `Index' MText `evaluation versions; versions: evaluation' MCurrPage `1' Unique 998679 # end of Marker The result is a single Index marker in the FM that combines the two entries, making them much easier to find and edit. The index plugins that one can use with FM address this problem, but my clients haven't wanted to use the plugins, so I improvised the MIF solution.

May I simply suggest that you and Paul (and others who want that e-mail client behavior) simply do a Reply to All *each and every time* you want to reply to a Frame Users List message, and you will get the effect you want? Actually, it doesn't give us the effect we want at all. This doubles the Internet traffic needlessly, whereas Reply to List sends only one message. Sometimes, as with this message, it quadruples the Internet traffic, because there were 3 cc's on the posting. I've been using lists since 1993 and running several since 1996, and Framers is the only list I've ever come across that works this way. Replying to list messages should be simple - click Reply and the addressing is done. The current setup is cumbersome and has tripped many of us up. If someone wants to reply privately, they will naturally be more careful and double-check the To address. I totally agree. Reply to List should be the default. It's a list, for goodness sake. It's supposed to go to everyone.
RE: MS Word Numbering (was RE: FrameMaker uses)
The tutorials are already on the web, Lester. You may have to search for them a bit. I no longer have the URLs. Maybe others on this list do. And as another poster replied, it's essential that everyone who touches a Word doc knows how to handle the numbering (and uses the same Word template). = Mike Bradley www.techpubs.com I for one would appreciate understanding the 'proper' way to handle numbering in Word. For me, it would help to fix garbaged numbers in document I receive to convert to SGML - numbering is an issue because if it's wrong, the structure requires a lot of manual correction. ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send list messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/archive%40mail-archive.com Send administrative questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit http://www.frameusers.com/ for more resources and info.

RE: Framemaker Uses
I've used FM to write training documents for my union. I can't do it as much as I'd like to because, of course, not many folks have FM and they wouldn't be able to maintain the docs. But the union has a group of tech writer members, so when I write for them, I can use it. - Mike Bradley www.techpubs.com ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send list messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/archive%40mail-archive.com Send administrative questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit http://www.frameusers.com/ for more resources and info.
best method to store template version
If it's version number and date, you want it to be imported when you import the template. And handy for those wanting to check it. So I'd put it in a User Variable. The template author would have to remember to update the variable when s/he edited the template, but for everyone else the transfer of the information would be transparent and easily accessible. = Mike Bradley www.techpubs.com
