Word 2010 to non-structured Frame 9

2014-06-05 Thread Harold Winberg
Hello Framers

Our writing group is being tasked to convert Word 2010 technical documents to
non-structured Framemaker 9 in order to have all our pubs outsourced (here in
the USA) as Frame.

Please, what is the best way to do this? We would consider getting a newer
version of Frame or add-on software.

Thanks

Les Winberg

Script for generated files in structured documents

2008-06-18 Thread Harold Winberg
Hello Framers

Does anyone know of a good outfit to write a script for generated files:
TOC, Index etc. in structured documents?

We are moving from standard to structure and have a mixed bag of old
tags etc.

Is a script the best answer??

Is there a quick switch from structure to non-structure?

2008-05-30 Thread Harold Winberg
Hello Framers

I have a question. I will try to make it simple. As usual, we are in a
mess again.

We have a book that is mix of structure and non-structure (Don't ask
why). We want to generate an index but the mix gives us a problem
generating. I get a message that it can't open x file because it is
structure and then fails to generate.

We have made a copy of the book so as not to ruin the original.

OUESTION:

Is there a simple way to pull the structure out of the whole book?

I think that would leave the old tags and let us generate the index
normally.

Thanks

Les

Structure to non-structure.

2008-05-02 Thread Harold Winberg
Hello Framers.

Think me nuts but is there an easy way to convert a structured document
to non-structured?

The original doc was converted directly from Word to structured.

The reason I am asking is that I am involved in a panic project where we
might not have a working structured document by the time the TOC and
index are due.

My plan is to use a non-structured doc with para tags to make Index and
TOC. I will have a very good draft and can adjust if we have a problem
at the end.

I know this sounds insane but I have learned that it works and it gives
time to develop a good index before the last day of the project.

Thanks

Les.

Standard to SGMG generated files

2008-04-24 Thread Harold Winberg
Hello Framers

We are converting our FM manuals from standard to SGML.

In the standard manuals we used para tags to generate TOC, LOT, LOF and
index.

We have an EDD that uses FormatChangeList.

Is there a plug-in or good method to create these formerly para tag
generated files?

Thanks

All of you were correct but first I had to do the following: Thanks Dave

To Enable or Disable the Show Warnings While Clearing History feature:

1. Choose File Preferences General.

2. Check (to enable) or Uncheck (to disable) the Show Warnings While
Clearing History checkbox.

3. Click Set.

You can also enable or disable the following options:

-- Once For Every History Clearing Command: Displays the warning
discussed in the FrameMaker 7.2 supplement once for ever scenario and
then will not display it again.

-- Always: Displays the warning dialogue for every scenario that clears
the history every time that scenario happens.

Once you set either of these options, a pop-up window displays the
message Cannot be undone. Undo history will be lost. OK to continue?.

IXgen Apply Edited Marker List

2008-03-27 Thread Harold Winberg
Hello Framers

We are working on an Index with IXgen.

I have a question about the Apply Edited Marker List.

I can't find the exact procedure in the User Guide.

We have edited a list over a couple days. Now, we want to apply it.

We have deleted and added.

If I want to apply all, do I have to highlight anything?

OUESTIONS

Do I put the List in the main folder where the Book is? We edited it
outside the folder.

Do I have to give it a special name?

Do I have to open all the files in the Book I want to apply the list to?

Do I open the List and then from the menu click - apply?

Sounds simple but is it right??

IX generation question restated

2008-03-18 Thread Harold Winberg
Earlier message was:

Dear Framers

We are entering a $paranum for both TOC and index (IX) entities. It
works, however, it applies the most recent autonumber format not the one
specifically assigned to the paragraph tag.

Hopefully more clearly stated:

We are trying to count work packages (chapters-files)(WP 0001 etc) using
a specific autonum assigned to the WP Number paragraph tag. This tag is
at the beginning of each document. The problem that we are encountering
is that any autonum occurrence that is previous to the TOC tag or IX
marker is reflected in the respective generated files instead of the WP
Number assignment. The autonum counters n, n+ etc. work. That is not
the issue. We want the WP Number assignment to carry into the TOC and IX
as opposed to any autonum occurrence that happens to be previous to the
TOC tag/IX marker

IXgen Key Word

I have a question about the key word list.

My boss gave me a Word doc with some key words and told me there was a

cut paste one by one but is there really a way to insert these words
all at once into individual cells of the table in the FM Key Word

Or, can I convert the list to Excel to it?

Let me know please.

I have been taxed to become the INDEX Guru for large military
maintenance manuals.

The manuals are for armored MRAP vehicles and contain remove, install,
inspect and have a lot of graphics.

The manuals are based MIL-STD-40051-2.

I will research the MIL STD, DoD and logistics resources.

I would really appreciate any suggestions, ideas or examples about these
kinds of indexes.

Is there a super plug-in? I have heard of IXgen.

Thanks in advance.

Book page count

2008-02-22 Thread Harold Winberg
I have encountered a strange problem

We are finishing a large book and we aren't ready to generate a TOC yet.

I have been getting an initial page count of each chapter in the book by
clicking the chapter and getting the number of pages without opening up
the chapter by looking at the bottom left of the screen.

The number of pages in the clicked chapter file of the book appears at
the bottom left of the screen.

I spent hours getting a count for each of about 400+ chapters and then
noticed that when you open a chapter, the number of pages doesn't always
match.

Does anyone know why this happens? What can it affect?

Page count in a large book

2008-02-20 Thread Harold Winberg
Hello Framers

Does anyone know a simple way to just count the number of pages in a
large book (or any book)?

All we really need at this point is to count the number of pages for
organizational purposes.

Thanks

List of Effective Pages (LEP)

2008-02-15 Thread Harold Winberg
Hello Framers

I have been tasked to help make a List of Effective Pages (LEP) that
conforms to military standard MIL-STD-40051-2.

The manual is about 6500 pages.

I know how the LEP should look but wonder if anyone out there has any
great ideas about doing it.

We have a manually drafted list which we can finish manually.

This could be very tedious.

Is there a method or plug in to help do this?

Could we generate it??

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Could IXgen help??

Thanks

Translation

2007-11-06 Thread Harold Winberg
Hello Framers:

Can anyone tell me about translation? I am currently interested in
translating technical manuals and parts lists that are in Frame 7.2 from
English to Arabic and French.

I have a few questions:

How would this normally be done? Would it be done in a separate program
and then put into Frame?

What is the best SW translation program? Can you customize it?

Are there electronic technical dictionaries out there?

How is cost normally calculated? - per word, project etc??

What are some good companies for this??

Splitting a long table into separate tables in FM 7.2

2007-07-17 Thread Harold Winberg
We have some long tables (several pages) in FM 7.2.

We would like to make separate tables of some of the topics in this long
table and put them on separate pages in some places.

How can I do this??

How can I give each new table a title?

How can I move or push a table section to the next page??

Thanks in advance.
