RE: Blank pages

2014-03-12 Thread Lisa Freeman
Also, if you have a master page for blank pages, make sure it doesn't have a
text box on it that is set to be editable on the body pages. That had me
pulling my hair out a few weeks ago.

I have all of my books set for single-sided with Delete Empty Pages. Lately
extra blank pages are showing on many documents even after I save (which almost
always clears out empty pages) or select Remove Overrides when going from
master view to page view (another reliable way for deleting extra pages). But
they still remain, and I can only get rid of them manually. I use Frame 10 on a
64-bit Windows 7 system. Today I worked on a 100 page file where the document
shrank considerably to about 50 pages. And again, even after saving and
generating the book, the extra pages still remained.
These pages show after the end of the section mark. What could be causing this?

Pam

Master Page vs Body Page Text Boxes - How to Auto-Delete Blanks?

2014-02-08 Thread Lisa Freeman
Hello Fellow Framers,

I am having a dilemma with Master Page Issues.

FrameMaker 10, Structured. I've been using FrameMaker for 15 years and never
run across this issue.

The left and right master pages have a text box in the footer area set to be
editable on the body pages. This is needed to track various revision dates.
When tags are displayed and edited, etc., more pages are added to accommodate
the expansion of data as they normally would be. But, when the tags are turned
off and it's time to create the output file (either printed or PDF), the
additional pages cannot be deleted because Frame doesn't see them as Empty.
The text box from the master pages is still on each of the additional pages.

The pagination is set to Delete Empty Pages. I have tried creating a blank
master page with and without the same and different text flows, tried
disconnecting the pages, and every other trick I know.

Maybe I've just been looking at this for too long, but if anyone can point out
something obvious that I am missing, please help!

Thanks in Advance!

Sincerely,
Lisa Freeman

External Linking - Cross-ref or Hyperlink?

2013-08-14 Thread Lisa Freeman
Hello All,

FrameMaker 10, Unstructured. A co-worker has a 3 volume set of manuals and
needs to create links between various files within the manual sets. I can make
the links work using a cross-reference easily but it creates an absolute link
path. These links will obviously not work when delivered to her customer.

Is there a way to force Frame (and the resulting PDF file) to use a relative
path instead? I see where that's an option using a hyperlink but it seems like
it should be possible in a cross-ref. She has literally hundreds of these links
to do so I'm trying to find her the easiest way accomplish her task.

Please note that we are not in a position to write a script at this time and
she will be maintaining these manuals for at least the short term anyway.

We appreciate any tips you can provide!

RE: Custom Ruling in Multiple Table Headings using Read write rules.

2013-07-18 Thread Lisa Freeman
I am using the Initial Table Format/All Contexts Rule option within my table
definition in my EDD to apply the table style. I have tried to change the table
in my template using Custom Ruling and Update All with Remove All Overrides.
The table looks fine in the template.

When I do the conversion the bottom ruling is back. When I look at the settings
in the Custom Ruling dialog box (with the offending row highlighted),
everything is From Table except the Bottom. It says Thin and there is an
asterisk by the bottom ruling with an explanation saying that it is Overridden
by adjacent cell.

I don't recall ever seeing that before.

Thank you,
Lisa

Can a variable be used in a numbering scheme in Frame V8?

2013-05-03 Thread Lisa Freeman
Hello All,

I have structured books in FrameMaker version 8 (customer requirement) and am
having difficulties when trying to create a numbering scheme. Here's the
situation:

The incoming data is xml given to me as Sections. My read/write rules and EDD
create a book at the Section level and FM files for each SubSection within.

I have an attribute at the SubSection level that I am using as a variable
running header/footer on my master pages. This works wonderfully for the
headings, page numbers, etc.

I am trying to figure out how to use that same variable on the Body pages
within an autonumbering format. I am finding lots of ways to use the variable
within the text of the body pages but nothing about using it in the autonumber
format.

Is this even possible? If so, can someone please point me in the right
direction?

FYI - I do have control of the EDD, read/write rules etc., and can ask for
changes in the xml tagging scheme provided to me.

Thank you in advance for any ideas you may have!

RE: RW Rules vs EDD Conflict

2013-03-07 Thread Lisa Freeman
Many thanks to Ian and Scott for your suggestions, but unfortunately this is
still not working for me. I've tried both methods below as well as every
combination of the two I could think of.

After pouring through all the reference material I have, I am still stumped on
this. Does anyone else have any ideas where my disconnect is?

From Scott Prentice:

Try changing your rules to this (don't need the Graphic in the first rule) ..

element Graphic
{
is fm graphic element;
fm property entity value is illus;
}

Hi Lisa,
I think you have misunderstood the rules a little. So try this:

element Graphic
{
is fm graphic element Graphic;
attribute illus is fm property entity;
}

This will work if the illus attribute is defined as type ENTITY in the DTD.
In your EDD remove the attribute definition for illus. This will not be
needed in the FrameMaker environment because the read/write rule is converting
the XML attribute into a FrameMaker property. The type mismatch was because the
attribute was defined as an Integer in the EDD.

If the DTD does not define illus as ENTITY, then use this rule instead:
attribute illus is fm property file;

That's all from memory, so I hope it all works for you.

Subject: RW Rules vs EDD Conflict

Hello All,

I am working a project using FrameMaker 8.0p277.

I have a conflict between my Read-Write Rules and my template (my EDD, I
presume) that has me stumped. When I do a check of my rules I get the following
error:

Type mismatch for the FrameMaker element (Graphic). The type defined by the
read/write rules is different from that defined by the template.

The link takes me to the is fm graphic element statement below.

My rules are:

element Graphic

{

is fm graphic element Graphic;

fm property entity value is illus;

}

And I have the following defined in my EDD:

Element (Graphic): Graphic
Attribute list
Name: illus Integer Required
Initial graphic element format
In all contexts.
Insert imported graphic file.

Am I missing something that is totally obvious to anyone?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

FW: RW Rules vs EDD Conflict - Solved

2013-03-07 Thread Lisa Freeman
I'm not sure why this fixed my EDD/RW rules conflict but it did.

I changed my RW rules from:

is fm graphic element Graphic;

to:

is fm graphic element GRAPHIC;

This got it past the conflict error. I did a search on all the files concerned
and it is not in all caps anywhere else that I can find.

I still don't have a valid XML file due to my table definitions apparently
being a hot mess but it's progress!

Thanks for everyone's help. This list is a plethora of knowledge. I sure know
where to go for answers if I can't figure out my table issues.

You were absolutely correct that my read write rules were the problem. I was
using both entityref and fileref which are mutually exclusive. I was also
defining the graphic filename as an fm attribute when it has to be an fm

I still have more to do for this project and will not hesitate to ask the many,

Importing XML and having trouble with the Graphics

2013-02-07 Thread Lisa Freeman
Hello All,

FrameMaker 8.0p277 (Not my choice, customer requirement)

In a nutshell, I am importing XML created from an AXCESS database straight in
FM. The data is a basic IPC manual (one or more figures and a parts list inside
a parent assembly). I have the EDD and Read/Write rules created and they seem
to be working ok except for one thing.

I can't figure out how to get the Graphic Attribute to be recognized by FM. I
am getting the following error messages:

XML Parser Messages (Document Instance)
Message Attribute 'attname' refers to an unknown entity '123.eps'

And

XML Read Messages (Document Instance)
Bad entity name (123.eps) was specified for an imported graphic

Has anyone else had the need to import graphics in this way and run across
these types of errors? There's lots of information in the source manuals I
have, but 99 percent of it refers to exporting graphics from FM to Markup, not
the other way around.

If it makes a difference, I have full control of the template, EDD, and R?W
rules, etc. I can also have the format of the XML changed to what I need if
necessary.

Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Lisa Freeman

RE: Unstructured to Structured: Question about retaining paragraph formats - Re-opened

2012-09-08 Thread Lisa Freeman
Hello Again All,

The project that I was working on below (created structured templates and EDD
for use to convert unstructured to structured Frame) is now in the hands of the
end users. They are having an issue with the paragraph formatting not
sticking when they apply it in their new document (the structured template).
This appears to be a sporadic issue within the same document.

(FrameMaker 10)

For instance,

Header style (contains numbering reset)

1. Step

2. Step

3. Step
Header style

1. Step

2. Step

3. Step
Header style (the auto-numbering disappears from the style here)

4. Step

5. Step
Header style

1. Step

2. Step

Has anyone seen behavior before?
If the user changes the affected para to Body and then re-applies the format,
most of the time it's right.
Any ideas on where we can start to look?

Thanks in advance!
Lisa

the time being anyway). He suggested adding the formatting into my EDD using
the textformat structures.

I greatly appreciate everyone's input. This list rocks!

Hi Rick,

I unwrapped a few para elements and then imported the EDD as you suggested. It
ended up wiping out every paragraph format in the test document. They're now
all body again.

It was a good idea though!
Thank you,

Hi Lisa,

Try this: after you wrap a few elements, choose File Import Element
Definitions. Check the Format Rule Overrides checkbox and click Import. Does
that give you the correct formatting for each element? Thanks.

Subject: Unstructured to Structured: Question about retaining paragraph formats

Hello All,

FM10 - We are converting an unstructured Frame file to Structured. Due to
unfortunate circumstances, we are not able to use a conversion table (sigh).

The issue is that during the hand tagging of this file, we have to wrap the
text in the element tags in para tags to match the schema. When we wrap the
text, we lose the paragraph's formatting properties. Everything turns to body
and we have to reapply the format.

We are able to manipulate the EDD somewhat but can't stray from the structure.
We've looked at Read\Write rules but they don't appear to help in this case.
We've also looked at using the TextFormatRules, ElementPgfFormatTag options
but we have more than one paragraph style that goes to an individual element.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

BTW, everything works great when a new document is created using the template,
EDD, etc.

Thank you in advance!

Sincerely,
Lisa Freeman

Unstructured to Structured: Question about retaining paragraph formats - Re-opened

2012-09-07 Thread Lisa Freeman
Hello Again All,

The project that I was working on below (created structured templates and EDD
for use to convert unstructured to structured Frame) is now in the hands of the
end users. They are having an issue with the paragraph formatting not
"sticking" when they apply it in their new document (the structured template).
This appears to be a sporadic issue within the same document.

(FrameMaker 10)

For instance,

Header style (contains numbering reset)

1. Step

2. Step

3. Step
Header style

1. Step

2. Step

3. Step
Header style (the auto-numbering disappears from the style here)

4. Step

5. Step
Header style

1. Step

2. Step

Has anyone seen behavior before?
If the user changes the affected para to Body and then re-applies the format,
"most" of the time it's right.
Any ideas on where we can start to look?

Thanks in advance!
Lisa

Hello All,

Rick was kind enough to work with me on this issue and I am back on track (for
the time being anyway).

They're now
all again.

It was a good idea though!
Thank you,

Hi Lisa,

Try this: after you wrap a few elements, choose File > Import > Element
Definitions. Check the Format Rule Overrides checkbox and click Import. Does
that give you the correct formatting for each element? Thanks.

RE: Is there interest in an update to the List of Plugins?

Hi Lin,

I'm definitely interested in updated plug-ins. I'm still using ones that I got

Subject: Is there interest in an update to the List of Plugins?

Hi folks,

As some of you may remember, a number of years ago I created a list of
FrameMaker plugins and utilities that I shared with the framers' lists
because, at the time, there wasn't a single place to find that
information. Jeremy Griffith and Shlomo Perets were kind enough to
make that list available on their websites, and I think it's still
there.

The last update I made was about 3 years ago, so it's pretty out of date.

Is there interest in my making another update? There are web sites out
there now (Leximation, for example, and failing that, Google) that
have a reasonably complete listing of plugins, so I'm not certain
there's a real need; however, if enough people ARE interested I'll
update it and ask Jeremy and Shlomo if they'd be willing to host the
update again, or I can just send it on request.

Frame Displays and Prints Squished .cgm files

2009-04-18 Thread Lisa Freeman
We have a user here that is working in Frame 6.0 +SGML in a structured
document (yes we are trying to get the customer to update), on a Windows
XP machine. When he views and/or prints a page that contains a .cgm
illustration, the text is squished or flattened a bit. The same files
display fine on some other machines but not all. We have not been able
to find a common thread that causes this. We have tried checking every
setting in Frame that we can find, copied all the fonts from a good
machine to his, and tried every print driver in the house including
postscript, PCL, and Adobe. IT tells us that all settings on the
computers are the same as is the hardware. Strangely enough, it does
appear correctly in Frame 8. Has anyone else experienced this dilemma?
He can work around it for now by using another system to create his
deliverables, but this is driving several of us here totally batty!
Thanks in advance for any ideas you can provide.

Sincerely,

Lisa Freeman

Frame Displays and Prints "Squished" .cgm files

2009-04-16 Thread Lisa Freeman
We have a user here that is working in Frame 6.0 +SGML in a structured
document (yes we are trying to get the customer to update), on a Windows
XP machine. When he views and/or prints a page that contains a .cgm
illustration, the text is squished or flattened a bit. The same files
display fine on some other machines but not all. We have not been able
to find a common thread that causes this. We have tried checking every
setting in Frame that we can find, copied all the fonts from a "good"
machine to his, and tried every print driver in the house including
postscript, PCL, and Adobe. IT tells us that all settings on the
computers are the same as is the hardware. Strangely enough, it does
appear correctly in Frame 8. Has anyone else experienced this dilemma?
