I have the same too. Started about 4 weeks ago.

Same setup.

Never mind that this is my own content and that I consider myself
trustworthy, I don't think it's necessary to have to answer this
question every time that I want to generate a book. This only recently
started popping up with the save as PDF command starts Distiller. This
is particularly annoying when the book is a large volume that can take
several minutes just to get to the point where Distiller opens.

Any ideas on how to close this annoying Adobe message forever?

Re: [Framers] "Exemplified" - use in technical documentation?

2016-05-31 Thread Peter Hirons
Get rid of it - it's just pompous writing. Especially important if your
documents go to non-native-English speakers.

"Shown in" is universally understood. "Illustrated in" less so.

RE: Way to apply style to * paragraphs

2014-09-24 Thread Peter Hirons
The * shows that an override has been made - this may or may not be
needed. If you re-apply the style and discard overrides that change will
be lost forever.

Work on a copy of the file and compare old with new afterwards, or
create a PDF from the whole book and use that as your reference to spot
the changes.

I'm working with a large book from a client (66 chapters, 2500+ pages)
that has numerous paragraphs that show an * next to the style name.

From what I've seen, and of course, I've not looked at every page of
every file, the styles are in paragraph catalog, but apparently are
not applied properly. One of my tasks is to generally clean up the
style usage to make it consistent.

Before doing that cleanup (with plug-ins and scripts), I'd like to get
all the styles properly applied to each paragraph. Does anyone know of
an automated way to do this?

Why we love Adobe Tech Support...

2013-08-13 Thread Peter Hirons
After that incident he should have an enforced change of job.

Anyone who can't cope with the pressures of the job that includes
"difficult" customers (not that I'm saying Art was in anyway difficult)
shouldn't be doing the job.

Re: TCS subscription model: Illustrator version, and can you go back to buying TCS outright as an upgrade later?

2013-07-30 Thread Peter Hirons

I think the only way to get a definitive answer is to ask Adobe.

I suspect that by the time we get to TCS6 the only way will be with a
subscription model. As long as the annual fee is not more than we're
used to paying for our regular upgrades (depending on how often you
upgrade of course) then we'll be no worse off.

My problam as a freelancer is that I might not need to use any of the
TCS components for 2 or 3 years, but if I don't keep up the subscription
I'm left with dead products.

I've just upgraded to TCS4 so can probably avoid the problem for a
while ...

Hi everyone

Does anyone know what'd happen if I wanted to change back to outright
ownership in a couple of years? E.g. If I stayed on the subscription
model until TCS6 was released, would I then be able to buy TCS6
outright, at the upgrade prices? Or would I be stuck with buying a
full TCS6 licence? I'm not keen on breaking our upgrade chain.

Also, does anyone know if the TCS version of Illustrator stays in
sync with the Creative Cloud version? Or could there be a delay while
Adobe integrate a new version of Illustrator into the TCS?

Thanks!

FM re-creates X-refs every time it prints (or creates a PDF) and that

Hi, all!

I am posting for a coworker, but I have no answers or where to start
either.

In our FrameMaker 10 book, we add the change bar style to cross
references that have changed for a revision. When we modify that page for
a subsequent revision, we remove the change bar style. These change bars
reappear on cross references at random. The reappearance seems to relate
to the PDF process because when I open the FrameMaker file to remove the
errant change bar from the cross reference, the change bar that appears
in the PDF doesn't always appear in the FrameMaker file.

I have run into this situation multiple times. Any thoughts?

The book is in VERY unstructured Frame, but we cannot fix that at this
point (although I don't see how that would affect this).

Thanks!

RE: switch between 8.5x11 and A4 sized pages within the same book?

2013-02-21 Thread Peter Hirons
I frequently hit this problem, but my solution is to define a custom
paper size of 8.25 x 11 inches. This will print on both paper sizes
without problems and means you don't have the problems of making things
fit.

Fellow Framers,

I'm mostly a lurker, but have found the wealth of knowledge shared by
this list's members to be quite helpful!

I have a manual (I'm on Frame 8) in which I've used conditional text to
show/hide tables, text, parts lists depending on if it's for the American
market or European.

This manual originated for a US-made product so it started life with
8.5x11 (US-letter size) pages. And it didn't even occur to me that it
might need to be A4-sized for the European market.

Is there a good way to switch back and forth between A4 and 8.5x11 page
sizes, depending on which version of a book you want to print?

I have the sneaking suspicion that I will have to break this into two
separate books, but I figured I'd ask to see if anyone had
recommendations.

Thanks,

Lise

RE: switch between 8.5x11 and A4 sized pages within the same book?

2013-02-21 Thread Peter Hirons
The nearest ISO (Note: International Standards organisation - not just
European) size is A3, which just happens to be twice the area of A4.
That's approx. 11.5 x 16.5 inches (exactly 297 x 420 mm). If I had to
deal with that and your quaint tabloid size I'd set up a custom size of
11 x 16.5.

I agree that Nadine's suggestion of two templates is probably best if you
have time to work through each document every time you change to check
that there aren't any unfortunate page breaks. Sensible use of keep
with next instead of hard top of page settings can help of course.

Here's a what if scenario to layer on top of the Letter vs A4 sizing
issue (clever solution Nadine - I'll keep that in mind for my Service
Manual).

What if you also had to switch from US to UK spelling when you switched
from Letter to A4? What would be the most straightforward way to handle
that?

Also, does anyone know the equivalent custom paper size fudge for
switching between Tabloid (11x17) and the closest European paper size?

You could try creating two separate templates (in FM files that are
separate from the book and separate from each other). One template file
is 8.5 x 11, and the other is A4. Both can contain all other attributes
(paragraph styles, character styles, colour definitions, etc). Apply the
first template when you want to create a PDF for the US market. Once
that's complete, apply the second template to the book to create the PDF
for the European market.

Alternatively, you could use a processor that ignores your FM settings
(that is, you would set up all your formatting in the processor), and
then generate two different outputs.

switch between 8.5x11 and A4 sized pages within the same book?

2013-02-21 Thread Peter Hirons
I frequently hit this problem, but my solution is to define a custom
paper size of 8.25 x 11 inches. This will print on both paper sizes
without problems and means you don't have the problems of making things
fit.

Subject: switch between 8.5x11 and A4 sized pages within the same book?

Thanks,

Lise

switch between 8.5x11 and A4 sized pages within the same book?

2013-02-21 Thread Peter Hirons
The nearest ISO (Note: International Standards organisation - not just
European) size is A3, which just happens to be twice the area of A4.
That's approx. 11.5 x 16.5 inches (exactly 297 x 420 mm). If I had to
deal with that and your quaint tabloid size I'd set up a custom size of
11 x 16.5.

I agree that Nadine's suggestion of two templates is probably best if you
have time to work through each document every time you change to check
that there aren't any unfortunate page breaks. Sensible use of "keep
with next" instead of hard "top of page" settings can help of course.

Here's a "what if" scenario to layer on top of the Letter vs A4 sizing
issue (clever solution Nadine - I'll keep that in mind for my Service
Manual).

What if you also had to switch from US to UK spelling when you switched
from Letter to A4? What would be the most straightforward way to handle
that?

Also, does anyone know the equivalent custom paper size "fudge" for
switching between Tabloid (11x17) and the closest European paper size?

You could try creating two separate templates (in FM files that are
separate from the book and separate from each other). One template file
is 8.5 x 11, and the other is A4. Both can contain all other attributes
(paragraph styles, character styles, colour definitions, etc). Apply the
first template when you want to create a PDF for the US market. Once
that's complete, apply the second template to the book to create the PDF
for the European market.

Alternatively, you could use a processor that ignores your FM settings
(that is, you would set up all your formatting in the processor), and
then generate two different outputs.

RE: FrameMaker 10 does not start (licensing expired)

2013-01-02 Thread Peter Hirons
Resetting the date is not a viable solution due to versioning issues.

As others have suggested, a free upgrade to FM11 would seem to be an
appropriate response from Adobe.

In the short term this is costing me serious money! As a freelance
author, I had hoped to do a solid day's work yesterday, free from the
usual interruptions as everyone else was on holiday. Instead, I spent a
frustrating day trying various suggested solutions that all failed to
work. I finally downloaded a trial version of FM11 over my none-too-fast
internet link.

I AM NOT A HAPPY CUSTOMER !

As of this morning, when starting FM10 a message indicating licensing
expired shows up, and the program would not run.
(likely related to the change of year -- best wishes for 2013!)

Other FM10 users in different locations encountered a similar problem.

The Adobe chat representative suggested contacting Adobe tech support by
phone, where I (expectedly) got a closed for the holiday message.

FM11, FM9 and FM8 do start as expected.

Framers,

I received translated .fm files (book file + several chapters) from my

them, FM flags every referenced graphic file as missing, because the
path got messed up at the translation company. (It's almost but not
just right-my graphics folder is subordinate to the FM folder, while
the translation company put the graphics folder on the same level as the

I've been cleaning up a complicated, crufty template I inherited by
starting with a very clean generic template and importing the elements
I'm actually going to use.

I'm pretty much done, but in the new template all paragraphs are aligned
at the left side head margin. The paragraph tag settings are identical
(Across All Columns and Side Heads or In Column, as appropriate), as are
the text frame settings (Room for Side Heads checked, width .75, gap
.25, side Left).

In the old version, I can see the side head rules both on body pages and
on master pages. In the new version, I see them only on master pages.

Any troubleshooting tips?

RE: Which FMaker version?

2011-08-13 Thread Peter Hirons
I strongly suspect that you will not be able to buy anything other than the
latest version through the normal channels. Most software companies insist that
their dealers withdraw the old version when the new on comes along.

You might find an older version from a back-street box shifter or from
somewhere like eBay, but support may be difficult.

In any case you should go for the latest – you don’t need to use Structured –
and keep your documents simple until you feel confident to go for the more
advanced features.

You should also get some training – minimal for you, but not for anyone with no
prior knowledge of FM. The “Classroom in a Book” series are good if you can’t
get to formal training.

Was he trying to say they "have *to* offer free support?" In other words,
does EU law (or general expectation of EU customers) require free product
support? If so, this might explain the difference: $229 gets you a
product out the door;
$554 buys you hand-holding (whether you predict you will ask for it or
not...).

Just guessing here...

Perhaps someone has a suggestion about how to resolve this. I have
just resolved all unresolved cross references in a 50-page document. When I
search for any unresolved cross references, I get a message that none are
found. Yet when I want to open or print the document, I get a message
stating that the document has unresolved cross references. Is this another
FrameMaker glitsch?

Printing with line numbers

Gurus,

Does anyone know if it is possible to get FM to print with line numbers?

If so, how?

I have reviewers wanting this.

I would strongly suggest giving the folders numeric names in the
mmdd format (e.g. 20080929) then you will be easily able to find the
latest.

And building on that, you can, occasionally, convert them into a snapshot
backup directory.
Just move the files to a date-stamped directory of your choice:

/project/August_10/
/project/August_20/
/project/August_30/

As you reopen and save files in FM, the .backup.fms are created again, so
you have both a collection of last-saved files and incremental backup
directories.

The backup files aren't really backups. Once you understand what
they actually are it will become clear that they can only exist in the
same directory as the working source files.

The backup are actually the last saved version of the file but with
a new, secondary filename extension. When you select the Automatic
backup on save option, all that FrameMaker does when you do a Save is
rename the previous version of the file with a .bak extenstion rather
than flagging it for deletion by the OS. The backup is therefore
always one save behind the working file unless you go to the extra
trouble of making FrameMaker let you do two consecutive saves. If you
save frequenty, the differences between the .bak and the workng file
may not be major, but the .bak will *always* lack the last set of
 saved changes.

Re: Framemaker Books

2008-05-07 Thread Peter Hirons
Deidre (and anyone else who's interested)

Sarah O'Keefe's Framemaker 7: The Complete Reference has been
re-published under a slightly different title. I spoke to her about 18
months ago and she assured me that it was the same content -- and yes, it
is an excellent reference.

--

Regards,

Peter

 Hi all:

I know this topic was just covered, and I've searched for it in the
archives, but I'd like also to get your opinions.

I've been told that Framemaker: Classroom in a Book is an excellent
resource for learning FM. But on Amazon, the reviews are very poor.

Framemaker 7: The Complete Reference by O'Keefe has good reviews, but
it doesn't seem to be available anymore.

Framemaker 6: Beyond the Basics by Jahred has outstanding reviews but
it also is no longer available.

 Any suggestions?

 Deirdre

Re: Table rules randomly dark in pdfs

2007-11-30 Thread Peter Hirons
Loretta,

What you are probably seeing is a result of the screen - sometimes the
line triggers one row of pixels and sometimes two, making it look thicker.
When you increase the magnification all lines trigger two (or more rows)
and look the same.

If you move the image around on the screen do the line thicknesses change?
If so, that confirms the diagnosis.

--

Regards,

Peter

 Hi,

We just changed our tables from just header rules to column and row
ruling. And now we're making pdfs.

Some people's pdfs have random heavy ruling in the table rules. They are
absolutely fine in the frame file. And if you increase magnification to
200% the rules look like the same weight in the pdf, but up until then
 -- bad random dark ruling.

We're on Frame 7.2, distiller 8, using our own joboptions. We can't
figure out what's different from machine to machine.

Bad ruling appears for both folks that are doing a Save as PDF and folks
that print to postscript and using the distiller to make the pdfs.

And it also works fine with people using both methods of creating pdfs.

It also works doesn't work on Windows XP and Windows 2000.

(I had them try opening all book files when saving as pdf, and
uninstalling any earlier versions of distiller -- no change in
 behavior.)

Anyone have any ideas? Maybe it's the distiller, but I can't find any
 useful information?

 Thanks,

 L.
