Fonts not embedding in PDF 1.6
Thanks Fred & Mike, The problem was that the printer metrics used by the OKI color printer used to print direct from Frame are *very* different from the Adobe PDF/Distiller metrics. Once I loaded up SetPrint, Frame selected only the Adobe PDF/Distiller metrics for onscreen display. What I still don't understand is why I haven't come across this before in 14 very intensive Frame years :) But I'll leave that for another day. Thanks again fellas. jjj -- John Pitt, technical writer Sydney

FM 7.2, Distiller 7 I've tried a variety of font embedding options and used both Save-As and the two-step printing method, but ... the pagination in the PDF is different from the original Frame files. One chapter has 52 pages in both Frame and PDF, but while the last text in Frame is on p51, the last text in the PDF is on p 50 (with 2 blanks following). Reader 7 (my client hasn't bought Acro 7 yet) lists all of the fonts I've used in Frame under Document Properties > Fonts with each followed by "(Embedded Subset), TrueType, Ansi encoding". What have I missed? jjj -- John Pitt, technical writer Sydney

This sounds like the fonts are embedding. The "subset" just means that only the characters that the PDFs actually use are embedded. Not a problem unless you want to add text to the PDF itself. > One chapter has 52 pages in both Frame and PDF, but while the last text in Frame is on p51, the last text in the PDF is on p 50 (with 2 blanks following). There's a known bug that sometimes causes text to drop out of PDFs for no apparent reason. The solution is to drop the Distiller or Adobe PDF driver's Graphic > Print Quality setting dpi. Drop it to 300dpi first, then if that fixes the problem put it up to 600. To find the setting, from the Start menu, get to the printer properties. Then there are two places that you have to changes for the printer instance to work properly. First under the Printing Preferences > Layout > Advanced... button and then again under Properties > Advanced > Printing Defaults > Layout > Advanced... button. (This paragraph of text came from Arnis Gubis on the Adobe Frame forum. Thanks, Arnis!) This setting is called "Print Quality" but I gather it actually only affects the granularity of object placement. Dropping it to 600 or even 300 is almost never a problem. Thanks Rebecca, but neither method fixed the problem. To clarify a little more (after comparing both an original Frame page with its PDF page at 400% on twin 19" monitors): @ All fonts appear to be identical, although those in the PDF *may* be smaller. @ The number of characters per line is different -- the PDF seems to have about 10% more characters per line. (Note that this is definitely *not* caused by margins or the entire page being printed 10% smaller -- my first thought). Any ideas, anyone? jjj Rebecca wrote: Umm. Is your default printer the same one that you use when creating the PDF (which *should* be the "Adobe PDF" printer)? The kind of behavior you describe sounds like the kind of thing that happens when you change printer driver on a Windows system, since the font metrics (the precise size of each glyph in your document) are provided by the printer driver. This is the cause of those annoying "font information has changed" warning messages. And the reason why FrameMaker warns you about the font informaiton change is that small changes in font metrics can accumulate just enough to change a line break or two, and those line breaks changes can accumulate into page break changes, and that can change the overall page count. The differences are most pronounced when switching between PostScript and non-PostScript printers or switching from a particularly low-res printer. My opinion only; I don't speak for Intel. This sounds like a font substitution issue, but since you've determined that fonts did embed in the PDF, is it possible that you're using a different printer to view the FM file than to create the PDF? FM displays a document using the metrics of the default printer. If your default printer is not Adobe PDF, what you see on screen is probably not what you'll get in your PDF. Best practice has Adobe PDF set as the default printer when composing and viewing an FM file. Then, rather than printing a native FM file, print to PDF and print the PDF from Acrobat. SetPrint is a great, free utility that lets you set Adobe PDF as the automatic default printer for FM, without changing the default printer elsewhere in Windows. I highly recommend it. You'll never have to remember to reset the default printer in FM again, and your PDFs should always look like what you see on screen in FM.
