Re: [Framers] Print .fms continuously on page?

2016-09-25 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Peter,

You could use your topics as text insets and insert them into a single
document. You could still maintain the topics in a book, but the single
document would contain your topics and they would flow wherever they fit in
the document. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.
Thank you very much.

   I'm having a similar problem.
I'm trying to follow a pseudo-structured authoring paradigm: lots of
discrete topic files but using the unstructured FM interface. The book
is created and the topic files inserted directly into the book, just
that there's a lot more than the usual dozen or so chapter files.
It appears that FM wants to start each file on a new page even though
the 1st paragraph in the topic file may have the Start attribute set as
"Anywhere". This seems to be borne out by the available file pagination
settings of "Next Available", "Read From File", "Left", "Right" i.e.
nothing similar to the numbering properties of "continue from previous
page/paragraph/...". This means the text jumps to new pages even though
topics may be related. And there's a lot of extraneous white space.
I can get around this by just using chapter files in the book structure
and inserting each topic into a chapter file. However, I wanted the
topics in the book so that I could see the book/chapter structure &
easily move the topics without cutting/pasting within/between chapter
files. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

2016-09-20 Thread Ken Poshedly
As someone who is nowhere near the level of competency as most of the folks
here and unless I misunderstand the situation, may I suggest that you reset
this via:
Format --> Paragraph Designer --> then "Start: Anywhere" at the Pagination
submenu, then "OK" (using "Update All" only if you're darn sure that's how all
of your Heading1's (I think) should be).
We use FM 11.0 and that's what works here.

Ah, yes, this seems similar to a question I posted about a month ago,
"concatenate a book folder's files without pagination ?"

Rick Quatro replied offlist offering his help, but I never followed up :-(.
(My question was because I was playing around with various FrameMaker
features as part of preparing for that "structured best practices for
unstructured tools" presentation, and so I didn't actually have to solve the
problem. But I do plan to get back to it, if I continue working in
FrameMaker for the doc set in question. Tools might be changing, so it's not
worth investing in improvements to the docs/files/structure just yet.)

Re: [Framers] Print .fms continuously on page?

2016-09-20 Thread Monique Semp

it appears Groups or Folders are my best bet.

Just be sure to choose carefully. I was just looking at the Help for this
yesterday, and here's an extract, for FrameMaker 2015:

---
You can create groups in a book file. Like folders, groups are also logical
containers in a book file;
they do not exist on the disk. The difference between a group and a folder
is that a group does not
change the hierarchy of the files within it. Also you cannot set up
numbering styles for a group.

For example, the chapter number increments sequentially if the chapter is in
a group. For files organized
under a folder, the chapter number remains the same but the section number
can increment
sequentially. You cannot explicitly change the chapter number for files in a
folder as the files inherit

this property from the folder.
---

And right after the Folders and Groups info, there's info for "Add a child
book", which might also serve complex numbering requirements. But probably
they'd not handle the continuous printing requirements you need. Just
completing the list of related multi-file mechanisms.

HTH,
-Monique
