Which version of Windows are you running?
Are you printing to a PostScript printer, if so which one?
No one can give very precise advice without that information.

Don't install Adobe Type Manager! This program could wreck your
computer's ability to properly handle fonts. Adobe had to issue a fix to
repair computers where ATM was uninstalled.

Sorry, if I said that I mis-spoke. When highlighting the character that

I eventually realized that does not mean the font is actually installed.

You said that you have FM8 and FM12 on the same system, and that the
font displays correctly in FM8. If both those are true, the font is

In FrameMaker 6, the file for ZapfDingbats was in C:\Program

The font must be installed since it appears in FM8. The question is
why it's not appearing in FM12 on the same system.
The Type 1 font files are Zd__.pfb and Zd__.pfm.
Later versions of FrameMaker have a tendency to create multiple copies

in a Font directory under an Adobe application directory in Program

No, my fonts folder has no Zapfdingbats.

Is there a Zapf Dingbats file in your \Windows\Fonts folder? If so,
right-click on it. What does it show for

Hmmm. I just found the Frame 8 CD and put in Disk 1 and chose the only
thing that looked likely which was Autoplay.exe. It started the install
shield wizard which gave me a beep and said Frame 8 was already
installed on this system.
How do I choose to install fonts only? (I can't see anything

If you see the font on screen in FM8, and it prints correctly, then I
think it must be installed.
If it's the old PostScript font, check that both the .pfm and .pfb
files are installed.
Close FM12, compare the maker.ini for FM8 and FM12, make a backup copy
of the one for FM12, edit the original

But I've moved since I got that CD!

driver are you using?
The Unicode version of ZapfDingbats won't solve this problem since the
character map is different. Adobe Pi does not have the same set of
I've heard recommendations to use Adobe Pi as a replacement.
The document may be printing fine because of printer-resident versions
of Zapf Dingbats on a Postscript printer. If you have a Postscript
printer, and still have the installation disk, it probably has a copy of

I have Zapf Dingbats available in my Frame 8 installation. How do I get

I've opened a (very) old document which uses Zapf Dingbats which are not
on my current system. The document prints correctly from Frame 12, but
the screen display is gobbledygook.
What do people use for these fonts nowadays?
Thanks,

There is a weird behaviour in FM2015 (Windows10) regarding some Type1
fonts. For a time FM has been rendering them correctly but lately I have
experienced FM to suddenly and out of the blue stop showing the correct
font and substituting it for a different one, still maintaining that it is
