RE: FM9 files on network - logical network drive X:

2013-11-19 Thread Stephen O'Brien
Hi,

The problem occurs when a linked file, like an image in an anchored frame, is
imported by browsing manually to the location defined using a logical drive
like X:.

When right-clicking on the image and looking at its properties the image path
starts with X:.
This causes the image blinking.

With scripting, I replace the X: with the server name
\\ServerNamefile:///\\ServerName in the image path and all becomes well
again. Scripting lets me make this correction over all my document set quickly
and surely.

I reason that since the document path starts with
\\ServerNamefile:///\\ServerName and the image path starts with X: that FM
does not use a relative path.

What I can attest to is that my problem of imported images blinking on the
screen in my FM 9 documents is resolved when I replace a logical drive with the
real network address. Hence my guess that the logical drive causes problems.

Have a good day all,

Hi,

I just assigned X: to one of my network folders,
created a new file there and imported a graphics file.
No problem. Everything as it should be (FrameMaker
11 on Windows 7).

When your graphics file is on the same network drive,
the path should be relative. That means, X: is not
mentioned in the path name. Did you check the MIF
file whether your path contains any X?
Did you create a local file and import a graphics file
from X:? Vice versa? What happens?
What happens, if you assign another drive letter to
one of your folders on X: and create a FrameMaker

All sorts of things may happen. However, I would also
tend to believe that this is not related to the drive letter
X:.

The server (ex. \\Serverfile:///\\Server) that houses our FM files is
assigned a logical drive X:. I believe this has something to do with protecting
against viruses. FM does not like this.

For example, when an image is imported into a FM document using the X: path,
the image blinks in the FM document, as if FM continually updates the
definition of X: and the image path becomes momentarily unknown and then
becomes known (and so the blinking where the image is displayed and then
appears in gray and so on).

Now I realize that some cross-references to other FM documents contain X: in
the target document path. FM does not like that either. May crash because of
this.

Our IT guy says that the X: cannot be removed (same profile for all). My team
of tech writers usually uses a shortcut (defined correctly from
\\Serverfile:///\\Server) to open books/documents but someone always forgets.
I now have scripts that check the path for x-refs and images imported by
reference.

Does anyone know if this problem exists in later versions of FM (10 or 11)?
That would solve this problem once and for all.

What happens when you turn off the options View Options and then
deactivate the Display Graphics radio button in the Display section of the
resulting dialog box? While not optimal, since the graphics will now be
invisible, it seems that would allow editing the documents without the
irritating behavior you describe.

I have not experienced this problem, BTW.

FM9 files on network - logical network drive X:

2013-11-15 Thread Stephen O'Brien
Hi,

(Windows7, FM9)

Many thanks,

Re: FM9 files on network - logical network drive X:

2013-11-15 Thread Art Campbell
Not saying your analysis is wrong, but I've run into similar problems that
were caused by network slowdowns/overloads, and another time it was caused
by local anti-virus checkers taking their time to check files coming in
from the network -- like your graphics files. So it may be totally
unrelated to FM, or FM reacting to less-than-good network conditions.

Testing with FM11 should be easy -- download the eval and have at it for 30
days...
