Re: FrameMaker 8 to a Newer Version
What kind of XML will you have to produce and what plugins are not working? FrameMaker doesn't really have templates. You just open an .fm or .book file in a newer version and it's converted. I've opened FM6 in FM10 without problems. We use the word template loosely to mean the character and paragraph tags, stuff on the Master and Reference pages, etc. (everything that can be imported other than content). I don't understand the relationship between the template and the version of software that it was created with. Whether or not this even matters? I was under the impression it did matter. Re: FrameMaker 8 to a Newer Version
Oh, I missed that you're using structured FrameMaker. That does have templates. If the plugins were broken by the switch from FM6 to FM8, post the names of the plugins. Some might appear in the menu, others you might identify only by looking in the fminit\plugins directory. It's possible your company has a custom setup that's not compatible with FM8 or any later version. ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Unless you are just using FrameMaker as a hobby, I would go for the current version (Frame12). Trying to deliver work on an obsolete unsupported version asking for trouble. For instance, you might need to open a .fm file from a colleague - and if that file is from Frames 9, 10, 11 and 12, you can't. A Microsoft update patch might break something in Frame8, and it won't be fixed. Helen, you can install the 30 day trial of Frame 12 from Adobe's site, and test your templates in it. I would expect them to still work, however. Re: FrameMaker 8 to a Newer Version
Your FM8 templates should work fine in FM12 and you've already discovered that some plugins will need updates to work. You said you lost your FM8 disk. It probably wouldn't work anyway, since there was a Windows change that broke it. You can download a fixed version of the installation file (labeled as XP SP3 fix) here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=22platform=Windows You would, of course, need your license key to install it. If you've lost that, you should be able to get it from your My Adobe account. Otherwise, the free Belarc Advisor can retrieve it for you. And is looking to upgrade the FrameMaker to either version 10, 11, or 12. (These are the versions they can find to buy legal licenses with.) Does anyone know if there will be any issues with a template created for FrameMaker 6 running on these newer versions? Since I am fairly new to FM I don't cause myself extra grief. I have opened a file (that I created in FM 8) in a trial version of FM 12 and it looks okay but I don't know if there are things going on behind the scenes. Are there things I should be looking for? What issues might I have? Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time, Helen MacDonald PTI Technologies Inc.
