Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2020 (16.0.4) does not start (same bug as in 2015)
Someone wanders in from time to time, but if you create a bug report in the tracker and post the link here, others can vote on it. If you want, I'll copy the link and post to the Adobe FrameMaker forum, too. Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2020 vs 2019
Sean, The binary data in a FrameMaker file identifies the version of FrameMaker used to create the file. Each version of FrameMaker can open files created in that version and earlier, but not files created in a later version. In particular, FM 2019 cannot open files created in FM 2020, regardless of whether those files use any FM 2020 features that were not available in earlier versions. Each version of FM can save files as previous versions. Save As has an option for the immediately preceding version. In particular, you can open one of your FM 2020 files, and select Document 2019 from Save As's Type pull-down menu to convert the file to 2019. That might be practical if you only have a few files; it is a pain for a large number. An FM 2020 script or plugin can convert a large number of files and can convert to earlier versions than the immediately preceding one. Of course, any use of FM 2020 features that didn't exist in the output version can't be preserved.w https://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/features.html (which you can reach from the New Features button on the FM 2020 Welcome Screen) describes what's new in FM 2020. --Lynne On 10/14/2021 10:27 AM, techwordsm...@gmail.com wrote: The icon looks the same as FM 2019. Absolutely the LSP should return the finished product using the same software version. I would make a (nice) complaint so that this doesn't happen again - or to other clients. Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2020 vs 2019
The current version of FrameMaker is 16.03.979. It was released last July/August and has had 3 updates so far. Frame's update function is busticated, but that seems to be an issue with Adobe's website. You have to download it from the trial page. As long as you're subscribed, it should install just fine. Every now and again I yell at people in the ACP program or the TCS support about how busted the download and update on the website are. The link from your account page to update Frame still, after 3 years (at least) takes you to the update page for Creative Cloud! Generally speaking, most of the updates were for DITA but there were some nice things added for us non-structured people. There's a navigation pane now that can be used to navigate within a document. Right now it's file-based, but there's hope that they'll be adding book-level navigation soon. They've also added a utility you can use to split files down into multiple files based on a tag name. It has XLIFF capability for translation services, although that requires use of structured/DITA. And it FINALLY has a button for converting selected text to sentence case. ;-) They also added buttons to remove a row or column from a table, which has proven useful. https://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/features.html On Thu, Oct 14, 2021 at 1:50 PM Peter Gold wrote: > Are you saying that the translator used an as-yet unreleased version? > Possibly an NDA violation? > > Is the secret download location a pre-release repository? > > Shouldn't the translator return a client's project in the same release it > was submitted, or in MIF, to maintain compatibility? > > On Thu, Oct 14, 2021, 12:28 PM wrote: > > > Hi all, > > > > > > > > I was using FM 2019 sporadically. Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2020
Optical margins are margins made to look visually straight. FrameMaker makes them actually straight. So, if you have a line that begin with, say, a quotation mark or an apostrophe, there is a bit more white space at that point on the line, because the character is small. Your eye notes that and your brain tells you that the column edge isn't exactly straight. With optical margins, characters are shifted slightly to make them visually appear straight. Here's a short article with a graphic that shows it: https://indesignsecrets.com/tip-of-the-week-using-optical-margin-alignment.php Yes, FrameMaker can use old style numerals if the file has them, but not automatically. You can't just type the numbers and get oldstyle, you have to use the Character Map to find them in the font and then copy or type in their Alt-codes. Programs that support OpenType features can be set to automatically convert to old style numerals. Again, yes, there are also fonts that have numerators/denominators and super/subscripts, and you can use them if you set up variables or go the Character Map route, but that's extra work. If Frame just had separate settings for them, instead of just one, you wouldn't even need a font that contained these characters. Or, if Frame utilized OpenType features, it would pick those automatically. But, you're right, I should file them as a feature request. Again. :) Mike On 1/16/2020 7:48 AM, Lin Sims wrote: What is an optical margin? Also, if you're looking for "old style numerals", are you talking about where numbers like the 3 extending slightly below the baseline? That appears to be a function of the font set as much as anything else. I'm pretty sure I've seen fonts that provide that still. As for super/subscripts or numerators/denominators, again, depending on the font you use, there are font sets that include super and subscript glyphs that work well as numerators and denominators, instead of using the superscript/subscript function on the character designer. I've got a whole set of variables that are just constructed fractions using built-in font glyphs. (We use Source Sans Pro because it has a lot of the mathematical symbols we need and it also lets us construct those fractions.) At any rate, if there are features you'd like added, you can always put in a feature request: https://tracker.adobe.com/#/home Talk about them here and I'm sure a bunch of us would vote for them. You can also make requests on the Adobe FrameMaker forum: https://community.adobe.com/t5/framemaker/bd-p/framemaker?page=1&sort=latest_replies&filter=all and tag it with Feature Request. On Wed, Jan 15, 2020 at 6:17 PM Mike Wickham wrote: New versions of FrameMaker always seem to concentrate on adding features for the structured community. I get it. That's the strenght of the program. But the new features I'd like to see involve handling of graphics and type. For example, it would be nice to be able to make a graphic float in the middle of a two-column page, and have both columns wrap around it. Or how about taking advantage of the various OpenType features that InDesign can handle with ease, but Frame is clueless about-- like easy, true small caps, or oldstyle numerals? Or optical margins and hanging indents, for a more modern, refined look in printed docs? Or a separate offset setting for numerators and denominators? Right now, you can set superscript and subscript offsets to work for either super/subscripts or numerators/denominators, but not both. Probably stronger Word filters, a better way to round-trip MIF, and a more robust and straightforward way of finding missing fonts in the actual files. Cheers. Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2020
Hi, Doug: I don't have any running FM versions to test these ideas, but two possibly helpful hoops might be: * Run additional instances of FM to display the items caught in modal-dialog limbo, but this might be a problem if FM's lock files prevent opening the same file multiple times, (like Heraclitus couldn't step into the same river twice.) A workaround for this could be to save the a copy of the file. * A script that captures the properties of selected objects. Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2020
What is an optical margin? FrameMaker is a specialist tool for people who want template-driven PDFs (and optionally web help etc.) or who for whatever reason chose FrameMaker as part of their DITA toolchain.
