RE: What version of Frame to Get Started ?

2008-05-15 Thread Diane Gaskill
Hi everyone,

While I understand the rationale of starting with a later version, I'd like
to suggest that selecting a version of FM as a starter depends on what your
goals are. If all you want to do is learn the basics, I'd suggest no
earlier than FM6, as the GUI changed significantly from 5.5 to 6 and so did
the book-level features. If you want to start working with XML, then 7.2
would be the earliest version to use.

Hi Peter,
FrameMaker 5.5 did have some issues and yes what Rick says is really sound
advice, don't go for anything less than version 7.2. Having said that, I
used version 5.5 and version 6 for many years and survived! If you can't
afford to upgrade at the moment, version 5.5 will allow you to produce a
large volume of work. And remember, when you do upgrade you can convert the
docs created in 5.5 to the upgrade version, however you can't go backwards.

What version of Frame to Get Started ?

Quite right. I did that, and was told I'd be banned if I
ever did it again. They insist that you wait 30 days
before *initiating* the complaint process. The rub?
That exceeds the credit-card notification time limit, so
you are completely at their mercy... and they have none.
IMHO, that makes them complicit with the thieves. I don't
use them any more. If the vendor can't/won't take a credit
card *directly*, forget it.

Amen to that.

Some additional caveats: even if you do everything exactly as Jeremy suggests
below, you're still at risk. And you would be wise not to count on either eBay
or PayPal to provide much help. If you buy an academic version even though the
vendor has said it's not, eBay seems to view this as a case of mismatched
expectations between buyer and seller, which is not its problem. And if you
attempt to block a credit card payment to PayPal, be prepared for unremitting
and increasingly unpleasant letters and emails.

My hard won advice is don't even think about buying software on eBay unless you
know and trust the vendor. It's not worth the risk.

If they won't give you the serial number, point out that the SN
is *not* the product key; you couldn't use it against them, unless,
of course, they *are* pirates. ;-)

Another thing to watch for on eBay is "academic" versions, being
sold either by a student or by an academic vendor who doesn't
require a check of your credentials. Most of the folks selling
those won't mention this little detail, so *always* ask, publically,
on the auction item's page. Then, if they lie, you have some
recourse. Otherwise you don't.

The vendor *must* identify the item as "new" or "used". Avoid
the used ones. Adobe may allow license transfer, but that's not
a sure thing; the package may have been used for an upgrade, for
example. If they claim "new", and you cannot register with
Adobe because it wasn't, file a claim against them with eBay,
PayPal, *and* your credit-card provider immediately on grounds
of fraud. Lots of people have shrinkwrap machines. ;-)

eBay gives new meaning to "caveat emptor"...

Good Afternoon,

Gosh, I am happy that you told me that.
I have seen Framemaker listed on EBay that stipulates
"installed on one machine, only" and other variants of this
statement.

So I did wonder about that (registration and installation)
and said to myself:
"Well how would you know?"

So unless that it was stated that "it is new" or Shrink-wrapped,
and that "it is returnable" I do not even consider reading more...
I recently saw a Ver 7.2 (on EBay) with an attractive price,
that I got excited about, until I read down into the Listing and it said
"Absolutely No Returns"...
So I said: "I don't think so !!!"

RE: What version of Frame to Get Started ?

2008-05-15 Thread Dov Isaacs
Please be careful wrt/ EBay software "purchases" - a large percentage
of what is hawked on EBay is either pirated or stolen goods. Pirated
includes simply copying disks and giving you the serial number as well
as massive CD duplication efforts. In some cases what is being "sold"
is a copy of a package that already has been upgraded and not eligible
to be legally transferred to someone else. Before bidding on such an
item, get proof that it is indeed a legal copy that can be legally
transferred. Such information could be obtained from Adobe Customer
Support given a name and serial number.

What version of Frame to Get Started ?

Not entirely true. If you save a document as MIF from any version of Frame,
that MIF file can be opened from *any* version of FrameMaker. If the MIF
file has content that uses features that didn't yet exist in the FrameMaker
version that is opening the file (e.g. any of the expanded complement of
system variables that was added in FM6, or master page mapping to
paragraph tags), the older version will simply ignore that part of the MIF
code and you won't get full functionality. But in any case, the content itself
will be fully accessible and editable in the old version even if some of the
presentational niceties are missing.

What version of Frame to Get Started ?

2008-05-15 Thread mulholland4
Hi Peter,
FrameMaker 5.5 did have some issues and yes what Rick says is really sound
advice, don't go for anything less than version 7.2.

2008-05-15 Thread Alan Houser
If you learn with FrameMaker version 5.5 and migrate to FrameMaker 8,
the concepts, commands, dialogs, and user interface will remain largely
familiar for unstructured authoring. You will miss various bells and
whistles that have been added, and will lack experience with structured
authoring and DITA. This may or may not be an issue. Although the
conventional wisdom may be that "structure/DITA is the future", I'm
seeing as many new unstructured deployments as I ever have in the past.

Adobe has a very liberal upgrade policy for FrameMaker. Any previous
version is eligible for the current upgrade price of $299USD. I would
second Rick Quatro's recommendation to purchase an upgrade, if
economically feasible for you. If not, go with 7.2.

2008-05-15 Thread Rick Quatro
Since you already have FrameMaker 5.5, you can upgrade to version 8 for
about $300. Unless you can get an earlier version for much less, this seems
like the way to go. If you are going to settle for an earlier version, I
wouldn't go lower than FrameMaker 7.2.

Good Morning,

On occasion, I find late versions of "Upgrade" packages
