Zoom Lapse – John Du Cane, 1975 (UK) Accretion – John Du Cane, 1977 (I think – also UK) Peter Hello Frameworks, I'm hoping you can suggest some films (experimental or otherwise) to look at that utilize the zoom lens (the active, moving zoom). So far I have looked at these: WAVELENGTH by Michael Snow SERENE VELOCITY by Ernie Gehr BREAKAWAY by Bruce Conner and in the more narrative/documentary realm I have recently enjoyed HARVEST: 3000 YEARS by Haile Gerima and LAST CHANTS FOR A SLOW DANCE and SPEAKING DIRECTLY by Jon Jost. It depends on your platform - which operating system, which browser, etc. I can only speak about Mac. I find Safari and Firefox plug-ins (on OSX) tend to work for a while, then stop working, or work only erratically, which is kind of frustrating... Re: [Frameworks] Films that utilize the zoom lens?
Don’t forget the “constructed zooms” in Bill Viola’s early work, Space Between the Teeth, Sweet Light, and Ancient of Days – nontrivial meditations on time, space and scale. You will recall that in Ancient of Days, a zoom moves into a street scene at a constant rate while motion in the street slows to a halt, independent of the zoom. dear Mike, Andy Warhol's CAMP (1965) and Peter Watkin's PUNISHMENT PARK (1971) both use a crash zoom effect in vastly different settings. It's wild to think of these two films together. Stephen Dwoskin's BEHINDERT (1974) has a subjective, exploring zoom lens, which shares some similarites with Chick Strand's FAKE FRUIT FACTORY (1986) and SENORA CON FLORES (1995/2011). Re: [Frameworks] Films that utilize the zoom lens?
sometimes its interesting to consider the difference between a zoom-in and a dolly-in or crane-in, like Hitchcock’s Notorious and Foreign Correspondent, which essentially accomplish the same transition from wide angle to ECU without cutting. Foreign Correspondent is a dolly-in-the-sky. Regarding zooms, I recall some kind of gathering in a late Visconti where the camera zooms in on faces in the crowd one after another repeatedly. And another early Viola, Chott el-Djerid, has epic zooms in the Sahara.
