[Frameworks] A Tribute to Tony Conrad at The Film-Makers' Coop 7:30PM, Fri 06/03/16

2016-04-15 Thread Filmmakers Cooperative
*A Tribute to Tony Conrad *

*Presented by: *

*The Film-Makers' Cooperative*

*The Charles S. Cohen Screening Room*

*475 Park Ave South, 6th Fl. (corner of E 31st Street)*

*New York, NY*

7:30PM Friday, June 3, 2016

The Film-Makers’ Cooperative presents a tribute to the innovative
multi-disciplinary artist Tony Conrad, celebrated master of minimalism as
filmmaker and musician, teacher and friend of many in the film community.
To those who knew him well, his droll, acerbic wit was unmistakable. Tony
graced us with his presence performing at The Coop’s benefit events over
the years.

Our tribute to Tony includes his seminal work *The Flicker* shown on 16mm
film,* Straight and Narrow* co-directed with Beverly Conrad, Marie Losier’s
magical film portrait *Tony Conrad, DreaMinimalist*, and footage from Issue
Project Room’s benefit concert celebrating Conrad’s 75th birthday.

Tony Conrad

*The Flicker* (1966) 16mm, black and white, 30 min

This is a notorious film; it moves audiences into some space and time in
which they may look around and find the movie happening in the room there
with them. Much has been written about THE FLICKER. It is a library of
peculiar visual materials, referenced to the frame-pulse at 24 frames per
second. All flickering light is potentially hazardous for photogenic
epileptics or photogenic migraine sufferers.

Tony Conrad and Beverly Conrad

*Straight and Narrow* (1970) 16mm, black and white, 10 min

Straight and Narrow is a study in subjective color and visual rhythm.
Although it is printed on black and white film, the hypnotic pacing of the
images will cause viewers to experience a programmed gamut of hallucinatory
color effects. Straight And Narrow uses the flicker phenomenon, not as an
end in itself, but as an effectuator of other related phenomena. In this
film the colors which are so illusory in The Flicker are visible and under
the programmed control of the filmmaker. Also, by using images which
alternate in a vibrating flickering schedule, a new impression of motion
and texture is created.

Marie Losier

Tony Conrad, *DreaMinimalis*t (2008), color, sound, 26 min

This is a dream portrait of Tony Conrad playing in his studio with costumes
and wigs, jumping on beds with Joe Gibbons, playing violin in his home town
Buffalo, cooking pickled films, performing at Tonic in NYC, recalling his
first hand puppet performances with his mother, his first meeting with Jack
Smith and his involvement with Flaming Creatures. Two years of footage and
stories and laughter to share.

Joel Schlemowitz

*Tony Conrad 75th Birthday Concert* (2016) 16mm-toHD, footage from a
work-in-progress, 3 min

Tony Conrad and Jennifer Walshe filmed March 7, 2015 at ISSUE Project
Room's spring benefit at Greene Naftali Gallery, NYC.

The Film-Makers' Coop Presents:
CIRCA: The Films of Katherine Bauer
Wednesday, December 4th
7:30 PM
475 Park Avenue South, 6th Floor
The Charles S. Cohen Screening Room
Suggested Donation: $10

In this night of films, Katherine Bauer will be showing her 16mm work from
2007 - 2012 that is being housed at the Film-Makers' Cooperative. Most of
the films will be screened in the original color reversal and were hand
processed.

The films selected for this screening have been organized in two parts. The
first part of the show, Furies, features short films, many shot using in
camera editing on 100' daylight spools. They depict the conjoined fates of
civilization, wilderness, and desire, fading into one another, where the
familiar transforms into the bizarre and the bizarre is brought close again
in a momentary flash of recognition.

The second part of the show, Crystallus, includes a selection of four
phases in three parts from the continuous apocalyptic sci-fi horror epic of
the same name that depict formations of narrative and chemical structure
layering on top of and transforming upon one another.

The total run time of the screening is 77 minutes, with a break between
sections.

[Frameworks] An Archive of Intersections this Tuesday, October 22 at Film-Makers' Cooperative

2013-10-19 Thread Filmmakers Cooperative
Dear Film Friends,

The Film-Makers' Cooperative is pleased to welcome Josh Guilford of Magic
Lantern Cinema to curate a night of films from the collection.

We hope to see you there!

*An Archive of Intersections*

*Tuesday, October 22nd at 7:30PM*

*Charles S. Cohen Screening Room*

*Film-Makers' Coop*

*475 Park Ave South at 32nd Street*

*Suggested Donation: $10*

*
*
The Film-Makers’ Cooperative was founded during a period of vertiginous
crossover and exchange within the arts. Its expansive collection speaks to
the lasting influence of this interdisciplinary spirit. A treasury of
artistic collaborations that span individual disciplines, it also serves as
a repository of cinema’s own transactions with various artistic forms since
mid-century – a space where film poems mix with visual symphonies,
adaptations of experimental theater, and forays into the cine-dance.

Approaching the Coop’s collection as an archive of intersections between
seemingly discrete artistic practices and forms, this screening presents a
set of films that respond cinematically to a range of different media, from
architecture to object art, happenings, painting, and sculpture. The works
in this program thus present a remarkably porous conception of cinema,
revealing a filmic medium that is profoundly open to the insights and
impulses of the other arts.

*Curated by Josh Guilford of Magic Lantern Cinema.*

*FEATURING:*
Vernon Zimmerman, “Scarface and Aphrodite,” 1963, 15 min.
An experimental documentation of Claes Oldenburg’s happening Gayety, which
Zimmerman shot in Chicago in February of 1963, just before Oldenburg
relocated to Venice.

Dick Higgins, “Hank and Mary Without Apologies,” 1970, 18 min.
This pulsing examination of form, color, and perception by an early
proponent of intermedia explorations includes a soundtrack recorded during
Ray Gun Specs, a 1960 happening with performances by Higgins, Oldenburg,
Jim Dine, Allan Kaprow, Red Grooms, and others.

Marie Menken, “Watts with Eggs,” 1967, 2 min
A playful animation of Fluxus artist Robert Watts’s chrome-casted Box of
Eggs by a filmmaker who began her artistic career as a painter, and who
“moved adroitly between the media of paint and light, canvas and screen.”
-Melissa Ragona

Ericka Beckman, “Switch Center,” 2002, 10 min.
“Switch Center is a tribute to the futuristic architecture of the Soviet
post war period, and a reaction to seeing it transitioned to shopping malls
or global corporate office structures.” -E.B.

Paul Sharits, “Brancusi’s Sculpture Ensemble at Tirgu Jiu,” 1981, 21 min
“This film is a ‘chronicle’ of a visit I made in 1977 to Romania to
experience three of Brancusi’s most famous sculptures: ‘The Endless
Column’; ‘The Gate of the Kiss’; ‘The Table of Silence’; (and the lesser
known ‘Arcade of Pedestals,’ the modular system of stools which lead from
the ‘Gate’ to the ‘Table’)… Their placement suggests a metaphysical
continuum; they span the boundaries of the town and while aligned in a
(virtual) straight line, all three cannot be seen from any single point of
view, so there is a temporal unfolding as one moves through the town to
experience the relationship.” -P.S.

Storm De Hirsch, “Ives House: Woodstock,” 1965, 11 min.
“Metaphysical sketches of my stay at the Neil Ives house in Woodstock where
the artist lived and painted.” -S.D.H.

Donna Cameron, “Fauve,” 1991, 10 min
A highly textural monochromatic study of light transmission that invokes
the vibrant style of an avant-garde painting group that flourished briefly
in France at the beginning of the twentieth century, the Fauves.

work in the moving image, Inga Fraser will introduce a screening of short
works produced by some of the best-known experimental filmmakers of the
sixties. These works are seen to establish the functions, parameters and
aesthetics of film portraiture as it emerged in the early period of
postmodern experimental filmmaking. Come and enjoy the films and great

excite 3D seeing, a seemingly manic vibration may condition the action,
resulting in truly impossible sights. But then, how bizarre is the premise
of a 2-dimensional scene, anyway? It wasn't my idea to flatten the visible
world to a single insubstantial plane. Now look what happens to the tobacco
storefront when Jack does his prolonged dance in front of it. And what of
the sanctity of the movie rectangle, now forced to come onscreen and do
these twisty movements in depth when it was promised quiet retirement to
the sidelines forever?” –KJ
