Here's an advocacy documentary that examines sleep deprivation by the well known cinamamtographer, Haskell Wexler: Who Needs Sleep? http://whoneedssleep.weebly.com/index.html Ahhh... the glamorous life in Hollywood. Or is it? Film crews routinely work sweatshop hours, often clocking 15 to 18 hour days at the expense of their families, their health, their well-being, and even their lives. In 1997, after a 19-hour day on the set, assistant cameraman Brent Hershman fell asleep behind the wheel, crashed his car, and died. Deeply disturbed by Hershman's preventable death, filmmaker and multiple-Oscar-winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler shows how sleep deprivation and long work hours are a lethal combination. Who Needs Sleep? is a commentary on our quality of life. Chuck Kleinhans ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks

Barbara Sternberg's TRANSITIONS 1982, 16mm, 11:30 Transitions” is a film of inner life and speaks of time, reality, power. It depicts the disquieting sensations of being between - between falling asleep and being awake, between here and there, between being and non-being. These metaphysical themes are evoked by the central image of a woman in white over which layers of images and sound (voices) are superimposed. available from the cfmdc: http://www.cfmdc.org/node/1446 -- i have seen the film several times and it is an absolutely incredible film! one of my favourites. lots of optical printing... images of a woman tossing and turning in tangled sheets on a bed, sitting on the edge, smoking a cigarette, other images as well, repetitive superimpositions and the sound track is filled with layers of whispers some of which emerge more than others... i seem to recall the recurring phrase "i can't go to sleep" or something like that it is such an evocative and powerful film, especially for anyone who has ever spent a night laying half awake, half asleep. adc ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks

Tehching Hsieh's One Year Performance 1980-1981 My favorite of his one-year performances. He punches a time clock every hour on the hour for one year. He documents the process by firing one frame of film for each time-clock punch. The object created: a time-lapse film of a man spontaneously sprouting hair and shivering (due to slightly different poses every hour) standing next to a spinning clock. A rare (and effective) study of monotonous labor. Warren On Fri, Nov 4, 2011 at 9:36 AM, Paul Krimmer wrote: > Hey. im programming my month's schedule called "i can't sleep". Re: [Frameworks] I can´t sleep
Well, yes, of course, reading Mark Toscano's reply, there are all those films made at night. I saw one by Takashi Ito called GHOST. It was made in a dormitory in the company where he worked. And he wrote that he was sleeping like two hours a day because of shooting long exposures frame by frame. I highly recomend his work. SPACEY is very interesting. It uses animation techniques with photographs of a huge gym, but it seems like it was shot in the same painstaking conditions...I'm sure he didn't sleep much. And let's not forget Jeanne Liotta's OBSERVANDO EL CIELO. I am one of the unfortunate one that hasn't seen it, but the clips look really good and I am sure she didn't get much sleep while doing it. Re: [Frameworks] I can´t sleep
There are two good docos about call centers in India, where the workers keep odd night schedules: Sonali Gulati: Nalini by Day, Nancy by Night Ashim Ahluwalia: John and Jane Very different in style and POV, so not redundant. Also, the guy whose rampage is the subject of the excellent doc "Cul De Sac" by the late Garrett Scott was a laid off late shift worker with insomnia. Some of the interview footage in this film is poorly shot, but don't let the odd look put you off. Overall, it's edited very well, very smart, and remains powerful, disturbing and extraordinarily topical.
