Re: General Question

2000-03-29 Thread Duc Tang

No, I do not have it (check for updates) selected in the prefs. It just takes a long
time for me to
load it. I think the important part of the problem is, it seems like it is just
sitting around waiting
to start, after the hourglasss come off, the computer is not doing anything, then it
loads up 20
seconds later. WinAmp on the other hand as soon as the hourglass comes off which is
about 1 second it
shows up right away. Mozilla (Netscape Open Source Browser) also takes a long time to
load, almost as
long as FreeAmp though it just might seem shorter because I can hear the hard drive
whirling away. Any
suggesstions guys?

Re: General Question

2000-03-29 Thread Duc Tang

Guys,

I've removed all of the mp3's from the my music thing and it takes about 20 seconds to
load up
completely, I counted. Maybe I'm counting too fast, but I know for a fact that WinAmp
loads up
much faster. Is this true for everyone's machine or is it just me. I am running Win98
with
2partitions one for programs and stuff and one for music, my documents stuff like
that. Both of
the partitions are on FAT32. My computer is an eMachine eOne (it looks like an iMac).

Mark, what does BTW mean, yeah I go to UNC. Did you happen to major in computer
science and now
are working for freeamp? Is the money good since FreeAmp is an OpenSource thing? Or
are you
doing this for a hobby? Also I'm new to opensource, when I download the source to
study from
it, I get mightily confused, is their anything like a tutorial or anything describing
the
program like an 'SDK' or anything? I mean there are so many files.

Mark B Elrod,

I have around 100 and something. I am on a network(School), but I am not sharing any
files so that should not be a problem. Its similar to loading up Netscape, it just
takes
a long time, but freeamp takes an even longer time to load. How long does it take for
you
guys to load up FreeAmp. I don't use FreeAmp as my default player because of the long
loading time. But I still like it, and would like for it to succeed, because open

General Question

2000-03-28 Thread Duc Tang

Hi!

Sorry to bother you guys again about this bothersome issue of loading time for
freeamp. But since all these new versions are coming out I would definitely like to
see FreeAmp load up in a reasonable amount of time. I have very little programming
skills so I will not be able to do any coding to cut down the loading time, and I
certaintly don't understand why it takes so long to load. WinAmp loads up quickly
and so does RealJukeBox, and Real Player.

When I load freeamp the "hourglass" shows on the mouse cursor for a little bit but
then it goes normal, but FreeAmp will not be on yet, it generally takes 30 seconds
after the hourglass disappears before free amp is up. I have a 433 MHz celeron
processor, 64MB ram.

If I knew how to program really well, then I would try to code it myself.

Thanks!

115, only a few on the playlist thought, again winamp loads them up faster. Maybe
you guys can get permission to look at Winamp's source code. I load up freeamp and I
just wait, nothing is happening and a little while it shows up, sometimes I think I
haven't double-clicked hard enough. Even when playing single files it takes quite a
while to load up. I have a Pentium Celeron 433Mhhz with 64 MB Ram, which I think
should be sufficient to load up a mp3 player.

Hi!

I've downloaded the latest version 2.0.4 and it still takes a long time to
load up. It may just be my computer, I don't how it is like on other
computers. But I do know WinAmp starts right away and it can't possibly start
any faster. And I think the coca-cola themes are awesome, and they can
copyright it if they want to, spreading the acceptance of freeamp should be on
the top of the list.

And here is a suggestion for the playlist of freeamp, let the user rate the
songs on the playlist with stars. Say the default is one star, and if the user
likes the song he/she can assign an additional star to it and the song will
play more frequently on the playlist. And have the max number of possible
stars is 4 where the song is played every other time, it was just a
suggestion.

You should just leave FreeAmp running. :-)

But seriously, FreeAmp is built on a plugin architecture where each
plugin is in a DLL. When Windows loads a DLL from disk, it loads the
given DLL at a certain base address that the DLL specifies. If another
DLL is already residing at that address, the DLL needs to be re-based.
All of the address references in the loading DLL that assumed one base
address now need to be told that the DLL has been rebased. This process
is time-consuming, especially for FreeAmp since we have a lot of DLLs.

This can be minimized by giving base addresses to each one of our DLLs
so that when FreeAmp loads we can prevent the conflicts which will make
FreeAmp load a lot faster. Why haven't we done this? We've been to busy
writing code? Naaah.

Anyway, if you want to really get into depth about this issue check out
