setting up proxy question 2, aim behind firewall

2003-02-26 Thread Alvaro Gil
I read through the squid manuals and it requires a ton of disk space
and ram and a moderately fast computer. My server is a wimpy little
Pentium 166 with 48 megs of ram and a 6 gig hard drive. Is there a
simpler way to set up a method of using AIM behind a firewall? I don't
need an industrial strength Proxy, just something so I can use AIM
behind a firewall..

Thanks.

Setting Up an HTTP Proxy

2003-02-25 Thread Alvaro Gil
Forgive the simple question, but I can't find info on this anywhere. I
need to set up an HTTP proxy in order to use aim at fire-walled
locations.

How can I do this on my freebsd machine? Can someone please point me
to the correct location?

Thanks

Upgrading FreeBSD and XFree86

2002-12-30 Thread Alvaro Gil
I am trying to get a GeForce 2 MX 400 to work properly on FreeBSD 4.7.

A few requirements for the nvidia drivers are...
(yes the nv driver works, but it does not support TV out on X)

Upgrade to FreeBSD 4.7 STABLE or newer.
Upgrade to XFree86 4.2.1_3 server and 4.2.1 binaries or newer.

Here are a few simple questions...
(1)
How do I know if I successfully upgraded to 4.7-STABLE?

After I upgraded(downloaded 4.7-STABLE sources using cvsup and
chapter 21 instructions), I rebooted and it still said 4.7-RELEASE on
startup. What's up with this? Is this really still 4.7 RELEASE?? Or
could a mistake in mergemaster have kept this text?

(2)

How do I go about updating to the latest and greatest XFree86?
I used cvsup to update the ports collection, but when i started up X
4.2.1.1 flashed up before it started. How do I check what version of
XFree86 is installed and what is the correct way of updating it?
Thanks.

Also, I am able to boot into X with this driver but after a while it
crashes the entire system. Anyone running the nvidia driver with
success?

Video card with TV OUT

2002-12-25 Thread Alvaro Gil
Can anyone recommend a video card with TV out that can be used with
FreeBSD. I would like the TV to be the only monitor connected. Also
it should do 800X600.

Anything out there that works like I want it to? Its for a MP3/DVD
player project that will be connected to a TV and use a wireless
keyboard, so it is very important that the TV port be the only active
monitor at startup. Thanks.

RE: A question on AppleLaser Writer 16/1600 PS [off-topic-ish]

2002-12-03 Thread Alvaro Gil
I have been trying to find the answer to this question for years.
The apple service manual says to replace the mother board!

The best solution I have found other than taking it in for service is
to get another ROM. A version 3.0 ROM fixes password problems and
has the side effect of clearing the password. I have not done this,
and i only found one person online that has verified that it worked.
sunrem.com used to have them, but they are backordered now. As soon
as I find a 3.0 rom im going to try it on my printer

Is there any way to disable passive mode on ftpd?

2002-12-03 Thread Alvaro Gil
My server is behind a NAT firewall until I have time to put it in
front of it. People are having trouble downloading from the
anonymous FTP server.

I understand that normal the ftp sever goes into passive mode and
opens a new port in the high 1000-5000 ranges. How can i force it to
use port 21 for all connections? Even though I urged everyone to set
their clients correctly, some people cannot do so.

Some people are having trouble with this movie. I cannot assume
everyone knows what they are doing, I would like to set up a
fail-safe downloading point.

Thanks.!

RE: Is there any way to disable passive mode on ftpd?

2002-12-03 Thread Alvaro Gil
If that's not possible, I guess I need to know the same thing as Alvaro
here was asking...

The other problem is that when it goes into passive mode, the ip
changes form a global one to the local ip the machine is on! So it
really only works well on the local network

RAID Recomendation

2002-11-21 Thread Alvaro Gil
I am in the process of upgrading my P120 server to a more modern PII.
I want to have a RAID setup because i am pretty paranoid about data
loss and setup time. Yes I do have backups of everything, but I want
to avoid downtime if possible. I would like a RAID 1 setup of two
ATA 100 hard disks.

My questions are:

1 - Can I do this with software? I have read sections 12 and 13 but
I am still a bit confused if I can back up the entire disk? That is,
if one fails will it boot with the other? I would like to mirror
everything, including the OS.

2 - If I need a card what card would you recommend? Price is the
main concern, performance is not, I just want security. Also a two
channel is suffice.

Thanks very much, any info appreciated.
