sleepycat db VS MySQL or postgres
I have a rather extensive series of databases created and in use all with the very old sleepycat db3. I believe in the addage "don't fix what ain't broken", but in the case of db3, it IS broken and my db files get corrupted on occasion. I could move to db5 or db6 OR MySQL, or even postgres. I use simple primary key files, most entries are added from a CLI or termcap/curses screen. Some programatically. With about the same number of sequential dumps vs indexed random reads. I have no experience with the c interface for postgres or mysql, but also, do not know how much the c interface has changed for sleepycat 5/6 compared to the c interface for db3, which I understand quite well. So I am prepared for a learning curve irrespective of which platform I select. Records do not exceed much more than 10-20,000, with key sizes not much wider than 16 bytes (ipv4), 13 (mac), 32 (ipv6). And various smaller key sizes. Suggestions would be very much appreciated. -- Jim Pazarena fqu...@paz.bz ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

sound on FreeBSD
does anyone have a link where a web page has been created which explains clearly how to install sound drivers _and_ test them I.E. play a sound? I found on BSDForums.org an explanation which describes first using kldload to try to determine what driver you need, and then it speaks a bit about compiling directly into the kernel, but neither example show how to actually play a sound --any sound-- as a test to see if it works. comtrol rocketport 16 PCI
the 5.4 kernel appears to support rocketport simply by including "device rp" in the kernel compile, after which devices like: /dev/ttyR[0-9a-f] /dev/ttyiR[0-9a-f] /dev/ttylR[0-9a-f] /dev/cuaR[0-9a-f] /dev/cuaiR[0-9a-f] /dev/cualR[0-9a-f] get created. would someone please advise the purpose of the "iR" & "lR" devices? also, comtrol has some kind of support for the 5 kernel on their ftp site; with a few instructions on how to remove some existing files, add some of theirs, and re-compile the kernel. their instructions suggest that ports are: /dev/ttyC* and /dev/cuaC* when following _their_ instructions, a fresh kernel compile crashes. I see someone posted a question WRT the compile crash back in 1/24/05. there were no responses. I would like to confirm that the existing FreeBSD settings for rocketport support do indeed work, and that it isn't necessary to go thru comtrol's compilation routine. syslogd and pipe to email
I would like to email some kernel.warning messages to myself via the pipe action in syslog.conf, but I'm getting hung up on the fact that the pipe stays open (unless I HUP syslogd). The man page suggests that a script wrapper can be written to capture one line output and exit, but I wonder if there is any other method, such as an option/flag I am missing to terminate the pipe after, say, 30 seconds? I would rather have a script which waits at least 30 seconds before terminating rather than after one line, because some of the records I am looking for are multi-line, and I'm not sure if a script can be made to timeout. routed daemon
Can the routed daemon co-exist with a CISCO router which, by default, also responds to routing requests? The reason I ask, is that I accidentally installed routed, and it was running, and my whole network came to a grinding halt, until I de-activated routed. I had not set up *any* configuration file or anything other than installing the port (by accident). So did this halt my system because I had no configuration file, or because routed cannot co-exist with (in this case) my telco provided CISCO gateway router? Jean Lagarde wrote: I have been troubleshooting reboots over the last weekend, I think I might have enough clues now to get some useful hints from an expert. FreeBSD 5.3-release (see dmesg below for details) The problem seems to be with trying to run with 1.5GB vice 512MB of RAM. The system has not had problems so far when I only leave the 512MB stick in. When I add the 1GB stick the system will reboot at specific times, for example, while trying to launch KDE3 or trying to make OpenOffice (always reboots at "Extracting for openoffice-1.1.2-1"). I do not see any panic in the messages log, the system just silently reboots. I initially installed FreeBSD with only the 512MB stick in. The memory itself seems fine; memtest86 detects no errors. I too have a similar problem. I have 7 identical systems. all with identical MoBo's SCSI hard drives and RAM. One machine reboots frequently with 5.3 where with 4.9 it "never" rebooted. 6 machines are fine. 1 reboots. I changed memory sticks. (which incidentally always pass an extensive memory test). I even changed the power supply on the computer. The last thing I am going to change is the MoBo. Perhaps it has some timing issue discovered only with 5.3. Luckily when I needed 7 MoBos, I purchased 8 and have a spare.
