airport express disk (on router)

2008-08-22 Thread Kevin Smith
Does anyone know how I can mount an airport express disk connected via
USB to my airport express router ? I believe the disk can be
advertised on the LAN with the bonjour service - if that helps any.
thanks in advance.

Re: airport express disk (on router)

2008-08-22 Thread Kevin Smith
I was mistaken, I have the airport extreme which is currently sharing a hard
disk not the airport express. (I have 2 of those as well for streaming
audio, but that's not the one's I am talking about).
Why is this the wrong list?. The question pertains to mounting the AP
extreme disk on a freebsd server ?.

Re: need help debugging port mapping/server setup

2008-08-15 Thread Kevin Smith
Thanks to Doug and help from others..problem solved...
With the help of tcpdump, I learned that packets from ssh were arriving at
the host, however the port was being blocked by the local firewall which I
configured to open. The packet forwarding from the router was working all
the time.

how do I permit ordinary users to mound SCSI devices ?

2005-01-06 Thread Kevin Smith
How do I permit ordinary users to mound SCSI devices ?
As suggested in the FAQ, section 9, I am able to allow members of
operator group mount the cdrom by setting sysctl -w vfs.usrmount=1

This does not appear to work with SCSI devices. (ex: /dev/da0s2)
I get the error:
 mount -t msdos /dev/da0s2 ~/ipod
msdosfs: /dev/da0s2: Permission denied
Any ideas ?

the last time I was bitten by that issue, the mount point had to be
owned by the user (group write access apparently isn't enough).
that's a bit of a problem with things like gui mounters and I hope
that that behaviour will be changed sometime in the future. at least
I can't see any security problems with a user being able to mount over
a mountpoint where he only has group write access.

I thought that was the case, but I created a directory in the user's
home directory (as that user) and used it as the mount point and it
still does not permit it (see example above: ~/ipod is owned by the
user). It works with the cdrom device though- i can mount that as a
regular operator user.

mounting firewire/USB storate devices

2005-01-03 Thread Kevin Smith
I'm a little new at this, but can some suggest what is the best way to
mount firewire and usb storage devices ? I am using both my ipod and
compact flash devices with freeBSD but I find that I do not have a
simple setup that allows me to mount them easily without manually
looking at the /dev directory to figure out which device number belongs
to which device. (or using camcontrol devlist) and then editing the
/dev/fstab file each time. I first used a /etc/fstab setup that looks like:

/dev/da0s1 /sandiskmsdosfs rw,noauto 0 0
/dev/da1s2 /ipod msdos rw,noauto 0 0
That does work, however, the scsi device numbers change, depending on
what is plugged in and what order you plugged them in and you end up
having to fish around with camcontrol to figure out what number is
assigned to what...Questions.

(1) Is there an easier way to manage these devices. For example, if
there is a way to auto mount them when they are plugged in that would be
nice. Gnome 2.8 is supposed to support this, but I have not found any
clear way on how to set it up.

(2) More general but related question...Currently with the setup I have
above, if I want to use the command mount /ipod, I have to be
superuser. What permissions do I need to set so that a normal user can
do the mount ? -or- what group would the user have to be in. By default
users on my system are in operator and wheel groups.

Thanks

system time mysteriously changes

2004-12-28 Thread Kevin Smith
I'm having a problem with my system clock. The time will be fine for a
few days, then all of a sudden, I will notice that it has jumped ahead
by a number of hours (usually enough to change the day to the next day).
I can confirm that the time has changed on the system cloth in the BIOs
setup as well. This has happened once every few days.

I thought it may be a clock battery problem on the the motherboard, but
I am thinking that this is not the case as the minutes are usually OK -
it is just the hours/day that changes.

Another idea that I had was that because I am dual booting windows (on
occasion) and freeBSD, windows may be the culprit, but I verified that
by rebooting windows, it is not resetting the system clock.

Any ideas on what could be wrong ? I also have ntpd running, which I
used as an attempt to keep the clock set correctly (in effort to find a
solution to the problem), but it does not appear to be able to handle
correcting the time.

How can I debug who/when is changing the time on the clock ?

complete system backup recommendations

2004-12-23 Thread Kevin Smith
Hello, I'm asking for current recommendations on how to backup my
complete system (OS and all installed ports and user directories) now
that i've spent quite a bit of time getting it right. i'd hate to have
to reinstall everything again in the event of a drive failure. Here is
my allocation:

 df -k
Filesystem 1K-blocksUsedAvail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/ad0s2a 5948558 3071326 240134856%/
/dev/ad0s2d 23498930 1377932 20241084 6%/home
Questions:
1) Should I purchase an inexpensive drive and clone the filesystems ?
If so, what is the best way to do this. Drives are inexpensive and I
20G backup drive would be fairly cheap.
2) I'm installing a DVD drive - I suppose I could make DVD backups
across multiple CD's.
3) any sugs ?

cvsup newbie questions

2004-12-17 Thread Kevin Smith
I'm interested in upgrading to gnome 2.8 (and possibly the newer
releases of other applications)...I'm running the following version of
freebsd:

5.3-RELEASE FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE #0: Fri Nov 5 04:19:18 UTC 2004
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386

In starting to learn cvsup, I'm trying to figure out what I need.

The src-all collection seems like it is more than I want to update.
Freebsd seems to be working fine on my system and I don't think that I
want to upgrade any kernel or OS-related programs unless any
applications that I would want depend on it.

So, if I am just interested in the latest fixes/version for applications
running on 5.3-Release, should I just upgrade the ports collection ?
There is an example supfile in /usr/share/examples/cvsup/ports-supfile.
Would this be the best configuration to use ?

Also, when I do upgrade the ports tree, I'm assuming it will just
upgrade the skeleton tree, correct ? Even if I do upgrade src-all,
its not going to down load the .tar files for all the source code ?

Thanks -K

Re: cvsup newbie questions

2004-12-17 Thread Kevin Smith
Thanks for the tips. For the moment, I'm leaving the OS sources alone
and I'm updating the ports collection because my goal is to update gnome
to version 2.8. The OS seems to be fine - although I'm sure there are
additional bug fixes I can benefit from - but I'm a little scared to go
through the build kernel/world thing right now - especially since
everything is running nicely. (I have not had the OS crash in the 2
months since I've installed it - it has run continously -yet my linux
2.6 installation crashed regularly).

I do have a few additional questions...
1) is there a test utility that I can run that will tell me which cvsup
mirror server will be fastest ? I did this the manual way by pinging a
few and looking at the ave times coming back.

2) If I do update (src-all) using 5.3-RELENG tag is my version still
called 5.3-RELEASE ? - or is it now some new release of that (ie like
5.3.1 ?)...I guess my question is: Are all updates of 5.3-RELEASE
source still called 5.3-RELEASE.

3) After my cvsup of the ports collection completes updating, is there
any easy way to check which ports were updated ?

No, the ports collection is the collection of 3rd-party apps'
Makefiles and patches - it just simplifies installing applications.

So, yes, if you're just interested in fixes for apps, then update the
ports collection. Still, I recommend updating to the latest sources for
any RELEASE, as most of the time the fixes are truly important for most
users, and they won't disrupt your system other than the actual
building and installing (well, if it can possibly be avoided, but in
this case you won't notice any difference). Also, once you have the
source, then updating with src-all with your RELEASE tag will only
update critical fixes, not all the sources over again. It's also
possible to patch your system manually by fine-tuning the sources you
want with cvsup and then just rebuilding that part, or without using
cvsup at all (using patch(1)), but if you're not familiar with that,
then start with updating the complete system through these steps
(briefly): cvsup your source, mergemaster -p, buildworld, build kernel,
install kernel, reboot into single user, installworld and mergemaster.
It's a bit of a trick the first time if you're not familiar with it,
but the handbook walks you through it, and it's not as scary as it
might sound. Just do it exactly the way they say, and *don't skip
anything*, and you should be fine. If not, you can always ask here.
BTW, I personally recommend not using the -j switch when doing
buildworld. The handbook warns that it's not supported, although plenty
of people use it anyway and later come here with related problems, so
it might save headaches if you don't mess with it until and unless you
want to try it for testing.

You can set all this up very easily in your fstab file instead of typing
the command to mount the file systems (unless you just want access it
temporarily).

Here are the entries that I have in my /etc/fstab:
/dev/ad0s1 /windows/C ntfs ro 2 0
/dev/ad0s3 /windows/E msdosfs rw 0 0
(You don't need the 2, it can be 0)
You need to create the directories for the mount points (/windows/C and
/windows/E). The partition in /dev/ad0s3 is my FAT32 partition which is
the writable one - you don't want the ntfs filesystem to be
writable.if you want the FAT32 (msdosfs) parition to be writeable,
then /windows/E must be a writable mount directory. You of course,
should use your own device (/dev/ad0s*) names as they are going to be
different from mine.

Once you have these in your /etc/fstab they will automatically mount on
boot (as configured this way). If you don't want to reboot after editing
the file, you can always just do a :

 mount /windows/E
To manually mount...or
 umount /windows/E to umount it.
The configuration I have just described is how I wanted to set it up on
my system, but others may have different opinions/setups.

Good luck.

Re: mount ntfs (windows) file system in /etc/fstab fails at boot

2004-11-30 Thread Kevin Smith
Kris K. explained the problem earlier in the thread.
The correct entry in your /etc/fstab should be somethig like bellow. I
had a 2 in the 6th field (instead of 0 or leave it out); this causes
the file system to be checked on bootup which fails with the ntfs file
system. If you have this in your fstab, you should not need to mount it
in your rc files. Mine mounts automatically with no problem with the
following line:

/dev/ad0s1 /windows ntfs ro 2 0

moving ports to another file system

2004-11-28 Thread Kevin Smith
After installation and setting up of my BSD system for a while, I've
come to realize that I probably should have organized my disk a bit
differently and I have a smaller root file system then I would have
liked. I may have also created a separate /usr file system, but I have
/usr in the root file system.

The /usr/ports can take up a lot of space and I'm wondering if there are
limitations to having ports live in a another files system with a
symbolic link from /usr/ports to a ports directory in another file system.

Re: mount ntfs (windows) file system in /etc/fstab fails at boot

2004-11-25 Thread Kevin Smith
Yes, putting a 0 in the sixth field takes care of the problem and the
/windows file system is now mounted. thanks.

P.S. It's usually helpful to transcribe the exact error, instead of
describing vague symptoms.

Yes,I agree. I was not able to retreive the exact error message from
dmesg on boot as I had rebooted again and lost that. If you can tell me
where I can get previous boot messages (dmesg.today didn have it
either), I will post the message for the benefit of others in case they
have this problem.

Thanks again.

The sixth field, (fs_passno), is used by the fsck(8) program to determine
the order in which filesystem checks are done at reboot time. The root
filesystem should be specified with a fs_passno of 1, and other filesys-
tems should have a fs_passno of 2. Filesystems within a drive will be
checked sequentially, but filesystems on different drives will be checked
at the same time to utilize parallelism available in the hardware. If
the sixth field is not present or is zero, a value of zero is returned
and fsck(8) will assume that the filesystem does not need to be checked.
Since you don't want to run fsck on the ntfs volume, set this to zero.

If I leave this entry in my /etc/fstab, the OS reports inconsistency
errors on bootup when it tries to mount and goes into single-user mode.

sound mysteriously not working

2004-11-23 Thread Kevin Smith
I had followed the handbook to configure sound (sound blaser Live!) on
my new 5.3 installation. It was working yesterday but it doesn't work
now. Just to verify, I booted windows on the same system and the sound
card/speakers are not working.

Here is my dmesg output and sndstat:
 dmesg|fgrep pcm0
pcm0: Creative EMU10K1 port 0xc800-0xc81f irq 18 at device 2.0 on pci2
pcm0: TriTech TR28602 AC97 Codec
/home/kevin cat /dev/sndstat
FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm)
Installed devices:
pcm0: Creative EMU10K1 at io 0xc800 irq 18 kld snd_emu10k1 (4p/2r/0v
channels duplex default)

Any suggestions on what to try next ?

Re: bypass beastie press 1 to boot

2004-11-21 Thread Kevin Smith
I prefer that I don't have to wait for timeout - ie it just boots
directly with no timeout or interaction from user.

thanks, -K

This may seem a bit basic, but you realise that you don't have to
press the '1' key, right? It'll boot up after the timeout. It's only
like 10 seconds or so and the other options can be quite useful if you
happen to need to boot to single user mode.
