xorg/gnome slow on different network
hi all... i noticed that when i take my laptop to work and change the network settings in rc.conf before starting xorg after i do startx the whole xorg/gnome experience gets slowed down. first xorg takes it's time to start and then load gnome, window manager etc. and then all applications in gnome take about 30 - 60 seconds to start. when i get back home and change the rc.conf back to my home settings th xorg starts quickly and all the applications start at normal speed - 4 - 5 sec. can anybody explain please? thanks... ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: jdk15
I do not know how you installed diablo-jdk it but it definitely takes time when installed from ports. First it asks you to download the sources for diablo-jdk from http://www.freebsdfoundation.org/downloads/java.shtml. Due to licensing issues you have to manually download it to /usr/ports/distfiles after you accept the license agreement and rerun 'make install' for diablo-jdk port. yea... i did all that stuff for both ports too. all the downloads, etc. i've been using freebsd as main os on my laptops for 5 years now - have never used windows. and java has historically been a pain in the ass to set up on freebsd. right now i just wanted it to use it for openoffice. the thing is after i did diablo there is a java vm installed but the openoffice i got on this install using the pkg_add is complaining about it. the setup script crashes and hangs. of course there is a large log on it but i also have a day job... one thing i did forget about is to clean the jdk15 port. stupid. anyway it's doing it now again how long did it take to build on your machine? not really sure about those arguments calls/methods If you can, please paste them here. I am curious about them. if it happens again i'll send you the whole output... wasn't tangra a rock band in the 80's?! Yes, it was. I've come late to this thread but it's been interesting watching the speculation. Yes, they F'd up the installation. Badly. But you need to back up every scrap of data before trying to fix it. VERY important! When you go to setup a RAID mirror on a system, using a UDMA or SATA controller, (ie: NOT using a RAID5 card or SCSI card or some such) here is what you do. Start by going into the system RAID BIOS on boot, setup your RAID, then boot the install disk. Disks ad4 and ad6 will always show. If disk ar0 also shows, you can select ar0 and install to that. IF DISK ar0 DOES NOT SHOW, then your BIOS metadata isn't compatible. STOP. Reboot system. GO into BIOS. DESELECT and DISABLE the RAID. Boot system with install CD. At the screen that displays ad4 and ad6, select ad4. Select Minimal install. Don't bother answering any post install questions. Finish install. Reboot and login to root. At command line, issue command: atacontrol create RAID1 ad4 ad6 Immediately reboot from the install CD. Now, at the disk selection screen you will see ar0. Select this. Delete all existing partitions and recreate them, install the full system and your in business. nice... thank you. i love condensed instructions. saves so much time... Re: raid or not raid
how come there is ad4s1b and ad4s1c when those names don't appear in the fstab or df? Very often ad4s1b will be the swap and ad4s1c the full slice. That is not an absolute rule, but it is very much recommended (at least for ad4s1c) to keep it equivalent to the full slice. but there is ad4s1 (without [a-g]) - isn;t that the full slice? or ad4s1 is more like ad4 (only one slice) - cause if you notice on the output i sent in the previous message the kBps value is the same for ad4, ad4s1 and ad4s1g which (to me) it basically says that only the g partition is being accessed at that moment. thanks... Lots of people here know plenty about RAID, but you don't provide very much information. ok. fair enough... thanks. If dmesg itself returns none of the startup info, you can look in /var/log/dmesg.[today|yesterday]. as i mentioned the machine has been up without reboot for almost 2 years... /usr/sbin/pciconf can tell you what controller(s) may be attached. right, i forgot about pciconf... i can see one SATA and one EIDE controllers. both ATA subclass. no RAID controllers. nothing about RAID anywhere from pciconf A proper RAID will show up as a single device, just like any hard drive (but different). what do you mean by 'but different'? the actual df output lists this: # df -h Filesystem SizeUsed Avail Capacity Mounted on /dev/ad4s1a290M 81M186M30%/ devfs 1.0K1.0K 0B 100%/dev /dev/ad4s1d989M 50K910M 0%/tmp /dev/ad4s1f 15G5.0G8.4G37%/usr /dev/ad4s1e989M 33M877M 4%/var /dev/ad4s1g126G 90G 25G78%/work i read it as one disk - ad4 - with one big slice 1 and 5 partitions. am i wrong? fstab shows same devices. It does seem odd to me that a (supposed) RAID would show up as /dev/ad4. please elaborate. do you mean that the raided disks will have another id/name rather than 'ad'? Possibilities: Your RAID really is on /dev/ad4 and /dev/ad6 is something unexplained. Your RAID controller is unsupported in 5.x and not Doing The Right Thing but somehow still (kind of) working as a normal [S]ATA controller. Your RAID controller is unsupported in 5.x and your hosting company realised this and wired the shebang up as a normal [S]ATA controller because they couldn't get FreeBSD to install otherwise. There is a RAID controller and there are two disks connected to it, but the controller was not set up correctly. There is a RAID controller and there are two disks connected to some other controller which might lead to some interesting phone calls. Your remote hosting company put a RAID with two disks in some random machine and someone else is complaining on some other list about the inverse of your problem. ok. i guess i'd explore the 'interesting phone calls' one. if it doesn;t walk like a duck and it doesn;t quack like a duck it must be some other bird/thing... -- -- ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: raid or not raid
Also what type of RAID? If it's Hardware RAID _and_ it's using a 3ware card, doubt it. i don't see anything that ponts to that in the pciconf output.. you can install tw_cli from /usr/ports/sysutils. It's a nice little utility and will show you the status of your units/ports/drives and how many drives you have on that controller. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

No, it's on its way. We should have a version up within a week or so. But you're the first person I've seen who wants to install from the MySQL site. Why do you prefer this approach over the Ports Collection? well... lately i'm having trouble with ports that don't update on time and i have to 'fish' which mirrors are updated and which not. like for the new asterisk port for example... also for stuff that is 'really' important i usually build from src - apache, php, qmail etc. so i usually go to the src for mysql too. nothing against ports really, i like them... i guess i'm just used to build from src and besides i don't know how to pass options to ports while installing... like --prefix=/here/ --enable-this, --disable-that kinda options/flags... FWIW, there are differences between the version that we (MySQL) supply and the version that we (FreeBSD) supply, notably in the compiler options and installation paths. We're actively trying to ensure that both versions will be the same. If anybody on this list has suggestions which version is better, I'd be interested in hearing them. Re: mplayer-plugin build failure
You need to make sure this command works: pkg-config --exists firefox-plugin If you're building against seamonkey, then this command must succeed: pkg-config --exists seamonkey-plugin These commands check for the existence of a browser-plugin.pc file in /usr/X11R6/libdata/pkgconfig. well... pkg-config doesn't see them but locate does - and they are there, in the right place... both... so what's wrong with pkg-config?!? ok here is the errors output from pkg-config: # pkg-config --print-errors --exists firefox-plugin.pc Package nspr was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing `nspr.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable Package 'nspr', required by 'XPCOM', not found # locate nspr.pc /usr/X11R6/libdata/pkgconfig/mozilla-nspr.pc i have mozilla-nspr.pc not just nspr.pc... can i just link it?!? are they the same thing/version?!? is that going to work?!? thanks... Re: httpd could not be started
what does the httpd log say? I'm entirely new to FreeBSD, but have a fair amount of Linux experience. I installed FreeBSD 6.0 (Production Release) on an oldish i386 system. During the install, I asked to install ALL. The install went flawlessly. I need Apache on this system for some software development, so I followed these instructions I found at: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ports-using.html : # pkg_add -r cvsup-without-gui # cvsup -L 2 -h cvsup.FreeBSD.org /usr/share/examples/cvsup/ports-supfile # cd /usr/ports/www/apache13 # make # make install Everything to this point went smoothly! I edited /usr/local/etc/apache/httpd.conf ONLY to set the ServerName to the IP address of the machine. However, when I try to start apache I get: #/usr/local/sbin/apachectl start /usr/local/sbin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started I can't start apache. Here's a configtest: #/usr/local/sbin/apachectl configtest Syntax OK Apache also won't start if I bypass the apachectl script and start it directly. However it doesn't report any errors either: # /usr/local/sbin/httpd # Everything up above is with a completely fresh install of FreeBSD 6. I didn't mess around with anything on the system. I followed the above steps exactly. (As I side note, I've struggled with this for two days, and have installed FreeBSD at least 6 times trying differnet things. I can't get Apache to start. On previous installs, I tried using apache22 with the same results.) Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get ANY version of Apache running on a new install of FreeBSD 6? Re: missing /dev/dsp
Hi, What pciconf -lv says? Can you find your card there? not there. everything else seems to be fine but the sound card is not there. BIOS updates are known to make things better, but there are few chances to cause such problems, in which case you can go back to a previous version.
