xorg/gnome slow on different network

2007-10-25 Thread kalin mintchev

hi all...

i noticed that when i take my laptop to work and change the network
settings in rc.conf before starting xorg after i do startx the whole
xorg/gnome experience gets slowed down. first xorg takes it's time to
start and then load gnome, window manager etc.
and then all applications in gnome take about 30 - 60 seconds to start.
when i get back home and change the rc.conf back to my home settings th
xorg starts quickly and all the applications start at normal speed - 4 - 5
sec.

can anybody explain please?

thanks...

Just a wild guess but it could be a (D/DoS) worm active on that network.

it's not the network. it's the system itself...
talking about start up times of xorg/gnome nothing to do with
the network...

I am curious what exactly are your errors? I received some problems in

i guess the same. not much of a java fan myself - i just need it for other
stuff to work. the offending class seems to be:
/usr/ports/java/jdk15/work/control/build/bsd-i586/gensrc/sun/nio/cs/StandardCharsets.java
and something about non-varargs call of varargs method... whatever that
means...

Re: jdk15

2007-06-29 Thread kalin mintchev

I do not know how you installed diablo-jdk it but it definitely takes
time when installed from ports. First it asks you to download the
 sources for diablo-jdk from
 http://www.freebsdfoundation.org/downloads/java.shtml. Due to
licensing issues you have to manually download it to
/usr/ports/distfiles after you accept the license agreement and rerun
 'make install' for diablo-jdk port.

yea... i did all that stuff for both ports too. all the downloads, etc.
i've been using freebsd as main os on my laptops for 5 years now - have
never used windows. and java has historically been a pain in the ass to
set up on freebsd.
right now i just wanted it to use it for openoffice. the thing is after i
did diablo there is a java vm installed but the openoffice i got on this
install using the pkg_add is complaining about it. the setup script
crashes and hangs. of course there is a large log on it but i also have a
day job...
one thing i did forget about is to clean the jdk15 port. stupid. anyway
it's doing it now again
how long did it take to build on your machine?

not really sure about those arguments calls/methods
If you can, please paste them here. I am curious about them.

if it happens again i'll send you the whole output...

Yes, it was. Then there as a Bulagrian radio with the same name, which
now an Internet radio and broadcats at the address above.

yea... i saw that. interesting. is the radio out of bulgaria?

under devices there is another name - ad6 - but it's not mounted

My (VIA Tech V-RAID) raid disk shows up as ar0, although the ad4 and

Do you have the ataraid device in the kernel?

yes. but isn;t that in by default in 5.4 GENERIC?!

they insist there are 2 raided discs in tha machine. the os

  i

unless at device 31.2 on pci0 points to some RAID evidence - which i

I've come late to this thread but it's been interesting watching the
 speculation.

Yes, they F'd up the installation. Badly. But you need to back up every
scrap of data before trying to fix it. And use FBSD 6.2 on the next one.
There's been lots of driver fixes in the ata driver that you want.

ata raid should show all your data on AR not AD!! Here's an example
 from my mailserver:

 mail# cat /etc/fstab
 # DeviceMountpoint FStype Options Dump
 Pass#
 /dev/ar0s1b noneswapsw 0 0
 /dev/ar0s1a / ufs rw 1 1
 /dev/ar0s1e /usrufs rw 2 2
 /dev/ar0s1d /varufs rw 2 2
 /dev/acd0 /cdrom cd9660 ro,noauto 0 0
 mail#

Also, note the following. VERY important!

When you go to setup a RAID mirror on a system, using a UDMA or SATA
 controller,
(ie: NOT using a RAID5 card or SCSI card or some such) here is what you
 do.

Start by going into the system RAID BIOS on boot, setup your RAID, then
boot the install disk. Disks ad4 and ad6 will always show. If disk ar0
also shows, you can select ar0 and install to that.

IF DISK ar0 DOES NOT SHOW, then your BIOS metadata isn't compatible.
 STOP.
Reboot system. GO into BIOS. DESELECT and DISABLE the RAID.

Boot system with install CD. At the screen that displays ad4 and ad6,
 select
ad4. Select Minimal install. Don't bother answering any post install
 questions.
Finish install. Reboot and login to root. At command line, issue
 command:

 atacontrol create RAID1 ad4 ad6

Immediately reboot from the install CD. Now, at the disk selection screen
you will see ar0. Select this. Delete all existing partitions and
 recreate
them, install the full system and your in business.

nice... thank you. i love condensed instructions. saves so much time...

FWIW, you can use gstat (as root) to see if a certain geom device (eg, any
storage ) is being accessed, and its load.

the gstat is pretty cool. it shows something like this:

 L(q) ops/sr/s kBps ms/rw/s kBps ms/w %busy Name
0 6 66278.5 0 00.05.0| ad4

0 6 66278.5 0 00.05.0| ad4s1g

how come there is ad4s1b and ad4s1c when those names don't appear in the
fstab or df?

thanks

it works at leat on 6.x - not sure about 5.x.

Very often ad4s1b will be the swap and ad4s1c the full slice.

That is not an absolute rule, but it is very much recommended (at
least for ad4s1c) to keep it equivalent to the full slice.

but there is ad4s1 (without [a-g]) - isn;t that the full slice? or ad4s1
is more like ad4 (only one slice) - cause if you notice on the output i
sent in the previous message the kBps value is the same for ad4, ad4s1 and
ad4s1g which (to me) it basically says that only the g partition is being
accessed at that moment.

thanks...

think at that point the raid drivers were still considered 'experimental'.

it makes sense to me that if i don't see a second drive in the fstab there
isn;t any mounting which means that there is no raid going on...

is there any other way i can make sure if raid is actually on?
would there will be any logs somewhere?
the machine has been up for about 2 years and the dmesg is long gone...

Lots of people here know plenty about RAID,
but you don't provide very much information.

ok. fair enough... thanks.

If dmesg itself returns none of the startup info,
 you can look in /var/log/dmesg.[today|yesterday].

as i mentioned the machine has been up without reboot for almost 2 years...

/usr/sbin/pciconf can tell you what controller(s)
 may be attached.

right, i forgot about pciconf...
i can see one SATA and one EIDE controllers. both ATA subclass. no RAID
controllers. nothing about RAID anywhere from pciconf

A proper RAID will show up as a single device,
just like any hard drive (but different).

what do you mean by 'but different'? the actual df output lists this:

# df -h
Filesystem SizeUsed Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/ad4s1a290M 81M186M30%/
devfs 1.0K1.0K 0B 100%/dev
/dev/ad4s1d989M 50K910M 0%/tmp
/dev/ad4s1f 15G5.0G8.4G37%/usr
/dev/ad4s1e989M 33M877M 4%/var
/dev/ad4s1g126G 90G 25G78%/work

i read it as one disk - ad4 - with one big slice 1 and 5 partitions.
am i wrong? fstab shows same devices.

It does seem odd to me that a (supposed) RAID
 would show up as /dev/ad4.

please elaborate. do you mean that the raided disks will have another
id/name rather than 'ad'?

 Possibilities:
Your RAID really is on /dev/ad4 and /dev/ad6 is
 something unexplained.
Your RAID controller is unsupported in 5.x and
not Doing The Right Thing but somehow still (kind
of) working as a normal [S]ATA controller.
Your RAID controller is unsupported in 5.x and
your hosting company realised this and wired
the shebang up as a normal [S]ATA controller
because they couldn't get FreeBSD to install
 otherwise.
There is a RAID controller and there are two disks
connected to it, but the controller was not set up
 correctly.
There is a RAID controller and there are two disks
connected to some other controller which might lead
 to some interesting phone calls.
Your remote hosting company put a RAID with two
disks in some random machine and someone else
is complaining on some other list about the inverse
 of your problem.

ok. i guess i'd explore the 'interesting phone calls' one.
if it doesn;t walk like a duck and it doesn;t quack like a duck it must be
some other bird/thing...

Also what type of RAID? If it's Hardware RAID _and_ it's using a 3ware
 card,

doubt it. i don't see anything that ponts to that in the pciconf output..

 you can install tw_cli from /usr/ports/sysutils. It's a nice
little utility and will show you the status of your units/ports/drives
and how many drives you have on that controller.

after i forced the old pango package off the 6 release iso i was able to
get xorg to work and have all the applications working fine except
mozilla... i rebuild firefox but every time i try to start it (or mozilla)
i get this crap.. which libraries are those. gnome's?!

ok. well lets see this time... maybe somebody will actually read this...

thanks.

 hi all
i just wanted to install gaim. did update the ports and then went on to
install gaim wich installed a new pango that toally f-ed up my x. now i
can not use it anymore. xorg starts and then when it comes to fire up
gnome xorg crashes with some thread errors.
i think the issue is the new pango libraries installed because
gnome-session was looking for the old ones - i linked the new ones to the
old names but i get the thread error. it sucks when new software is not
 backward compatible.
my system is 6 release and it was running nicely before the f-ing pango
screwd the whole thing up. i'm not interested right now in upgrading all
the gnome and all the applications on top of it so i was wondering if i
remove the new pango and install the old from the 6 iso disks would that
make my life easier instead of upgrading gnome?
because of all this crap i have to use lynx to send this mail..
 thanks

Re: ifconfig wepkey on 6.0

2006-04-02 Thread kalin mintchev

hi.. i'm trying again to make my wepkey work..

i load manually wlan_wep. then do this in order:
ifconfig wi0 ssid here-and-now channel 6
ifocnfig wi0 wepmode on
ifconfig wi0 wepkey 1:0x7924092374273503745WEPKEYSTUFF
dhclient wi0

using bind dhclient

i get:
wi0: timeout in wi_cmd 0x0002; event status 0x8008
wi0: timeout in wi_cmd 0x; event status 0x8008
etc.. then it says that the network is down and the wi0 status is changed
to DOWN..

i'm really in need to fix this here as i'm on a convention that uses 128
bit key and i cant get a connection... and i need it badly..

thanks a lot...

according to the man page of ifconfig in 6.0 the wepkey should be 5
 or
 13 characters
 ^ascii
comes out to a bit more in hex :-)
 just enter wepkey 309EFC5AB8

   what do you mean?

i'm confused now... sorry. the key is generated by the point - wireless
router. and i get an hex string back.. no matter what i put in as
password (or how many ascii characters) i always get the 128 bit hex. so
when i try it with ifconfig i always get the same error - even without the
 index and the 0x...

 ifconfig: SIOCS80211: Invalid argument

 randy

  thanks...

some people contacted me personally for the solution of this problem and
now i'm going to update this post so it's documented here. for what its
worth...

solution:
install cairo from src: http://cairographics.org/news
then link the libcairo.so.4 to libcairo.so.2 in /usr/local/lib.
then run 'make install clean' in the eclipse port again.
that's it.

No, it's on its way. We should have a version up within a week or so.
But you're the first person I've seen who wants to install from the
MySQL site. Why do you prefer this approach over the Ports
 Collection?

well... lately i'm having trouble with ports that don't update on time and
i have to 'fish' which mirrors are updated and which not. like for the new
asterisk port for example...

also for stuff that is 'really' important i usually build from src -
apache, php, qmail etc.

so i usually go to the src for mysql too.
nothing against ports really, i like them... i guess i'm just used to
build from src and besides i don't know how to pass options to ports while
installing... like --prefix=/here/ --enable-this, --disable-that kinda
options/flags...

FWIW, there are differences between the version that we (MySQL) supply
and the version that we (FreeBSD) supply, notably in the compiler
options and installation paths. We're actively trying to ensure that
both versions will be the same. If anybody on this list has
suggestions which version is better, I'd be interested in hearing
 them.

Re: mplayer-plugin build failure

2006-03-22 Thread kalin mintchev

You need to make sure this command works:

 pkg-config --exists firefox-plugin

If you're building against seamonkey, then this command must succeed:

 pkg-config --exists seamonkey-plugin

These commands check for the existence of a browser-plugin.pc file in
 /usr/X11R6/libdata/pkgconfig.

well... pkg-config doesn't see them but locate does - and they are there,
 in the right place... both...

 so what's wrong with pkg-config?!?

ok here is the errors output from pkg-config:

# pkg-config --print-errors --exists firefox-plugin.pc
Package nspr was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `nspr.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
Package 'nspr', required by 'XPCOM', not found

# locate nspr.pc
/usr/X11R6/libdata/pkgconfig/mozilla-nspr.pc

i have mozilla-nspr.pc not just nspr.pc...

can i just link it?!?
are they the same thing/version?!?
is that going to work?!?

thanks...

 ^^

This error message emitted by make says that cairo can't be built from
 your current ports tree.

Update your ports tree, it is out of date (cvsup or portsnap, whichever
you prefer). It's been some months since cairo was last marked BROKEN,
and to successfully build eclipse you are definitely going to need a
complete and reasonably up to date ports tree to get the most recent
patches and make sure you rebuilt the GTK libs as part of the build
process (they should do automatically if needed anyway iirc).

ok.. how do you explain this below then. after i just cvsuped both java
and graphics ports and the pkg_add -r cairo comes up with:

pkg_add: package 'cairo-0.4.0' or its older version already installed

what is cairo.2?!??!

 I noticed you CC'd freebsd-java freebsd-questions but didn't CC
freebsd-eclipse@ Have you searched their archives? Tried the
WITHOUT_CAIRO=yes knob? What kind of system are you trying to build
 this on?

thanks Micah.. i'm not sure if i want to exclude cairo from the build.
i'm not very aware of what is it exactly - i know it's a graphic library -
but i think it has to do with the graphical interface of eclipse. it was
needed for firefox 1.5 too
the system is a 2 weeks old freebsd 6.0 release. no current or stable..
as far as archives i searched google mostly and the freebsd java
archives i'm aware of the eclipse list - just wanted to avoid
subscribing to another one - i have more then 50 now - and hoping that
somebody here knows about it. or on the java list...

apparently the issue is not a very widely experienced one. maybe only
recently the cairo 1.0.2 port was marked as broken

thanks...

You need to install a mozilla browser and have the headers available
 for mplayerplug-in.

i know. but i'm using the port. and have 2 mozilla browsers installed...
i'll get the src later and i gess look for gecko libraries...

ifconfig wepkey on 6.0

2006-02-11 Thread kalin mintchev

  hi all...

according to the man page of ifconfig in 6.0 the wepkey should be 5 or
13 characters. the wep key i always had is way longer than 13 characters
128 bit - one key only.. so when i try to set it up to the wi0 i get:

# ifconfig wi0 wepkey 1:0xWEPKEY128BITENCRYPTIONBLAHBLA
ifconfig: SIOCS80211: Invalid argument

this worked fine in 5.4..

any solution?

thanks...

 ^ascii
comes out to a bit more in hex :-)
 just enter wepkey 309EFC5AB8

  what do you mean?

i'm confused now... sorry. the key is generated by the point - wireless
router. and i get an hex string back.. no matter what i put in as
password (or how many ascii characters) i always get the 128 bit hex. so
when i try it with ifconfig i always get the same error - even without the
index and the 0x...

ifconfig: SIOCS80211: Invalid argument

 try install /usr/ports/net/isc-dhcp3-client
 and edit your rc.conf:

 dhclient_flags= see manual for isc-dhcp3-client

 ok.. this sounds reasonable...
but how do i tell the dhcp server what number am i assigning to fxp0?
now ifconfig shows exactly the same as on the other laptop except the IP
of course.

route get 192.168.1.1 shows also the same output except expire is a
negative number. how do i make the dhcp sever aware of the IP i assigned
to fxp0?

  thanks

Re: httpd could not be started

2006-01-13 Thread kalin mintchev

what does the httpd log say?

I'm entirely new to FreeBSD, but have a fair amount of Linux
 experience.

I installed FreeBSD 6.0 (Production Release) on an oldish i386
system. During the install, I asked to install ALL. The
 install went flawlessly.

I need Apache on this system for some software development, so I
followed these instructions I found at:
 http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ports-using.html
 :

 # pkg_add -r cvsup-without-gui
 # cvsup -L 2 -h cvsup.FreeBSD.org
 /usr/share/examples/cvsup/ports-supfile
 # cd /usr/ports/www/apache13
 # make
 # make install

Everything to this point went smoothly! I edited
/usr/local/etc/apache/httpd.conf ONLY to set the ServerName to the
IP address of the machine. However, when I try to start apache I
 get:

 #/usr/local/sbin/apachectl start
/usr/local/sbin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started

 I can't start apache. Here's a configtest:

 #/usr/local/sbin/apachectl configtest
 Syntax OK

Apache also won't start if I bypass the apachectl script and start
it directly. However it doesn't report any errors either:

 # /usr/local/sbin/httpd
 #

Everything up above is with a completely fresh install of FreeBSD
 6. I didn't mess around with anything on the system. I followed
the above steps exactly. (As I side note, I've struggled with this
for two days, and have installed FreeBSD at least 6 times trying
differnet things. I can't get Apache to start. On previous
installs, I tried using apache22 with the same results.)

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get ANY version of
Apache running on a new install of FreeBSD 6?

 Thanks,
 Steven Narmontas

Re: missing /dev/dsp

2006-01-12 Thread kalin mintchev

 Hi,

What pciconf -lv says? Can you find your card there?
not there. everything else seems to be fine but the sound card is not there.

BIOS updates are known to make things better, but there are few chances to
cause such problems, in which case you can go back to a previous version.
Before you think of that however, find and read what the new version they
installed, is fixing. Be sure before start messing with the bios.

right... but how to be sure that are the bios and they didn't screwed the
card itself when they where replacing the board where the ram slots are?!

SoundBlaster compatible. my system is 5.4 and according to the handbook
devfs should figure it out - i haven't had to do this before...

any ideas why is the dsp missing? i think they did bios upgrade - is that
 what screwed it up?

in less then 48 hrs. pretty good. except the /dev/dsp is missing.

i don't see any cards in the dmesg but i know that the audio card is
SoundBlaster compatible. my system is 5.4 and according to the handbook
devfs should figure it out - i haven't had to do this before...
a have the audio enabled in the kernel... pcm...

any ideas why is the dsp missing? i think they did bios upgrade - is that
what screwed it up?

thanks...

Re: firefox 1.5 port

Have you tried going into the cairo directory in /usr/ports and doing a
 make
 deinstall and make reinstall?

yes... i installed from source and passed that point now...
i just think that the purpose of the port system is to avoid stitching
it all together from srcs... specially a port as widely used and
popular as firefox..

Don't know about the build problem but if you want the latest packages
 set PACKAGESITE in make.conf

eg from memory (on another machine I don't have access to)

 PACKAGESITE=ftp://ftp.uk.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-6-stable/Latest/
I can't remember if you need the / on the end, it either works with but
 not without or vice versa

This works in 6, I presume it works in 5.4. It's mentioned in pkg_add(1)

user limits

hi all...

i was reading the login.conf man to figure out a way to limit user from a
class to only certain directories. apparently that isn't possible there.

there is a path, but thats $PATH for the particular user... not really
what s/he can see or not...

if i can not restrict user cd-ing into certain directories using
login.conf how can i do it?

Re: New Logo

i just saw this. just my opinion... i was going to keep to myself but...
i like freebsd a lot.

The people who run the project decided to create a
 new logo.
 ok...

 It sucks

big time... like, really. it looks like a pig head from the future or
something...

but hey, it is better than beastie as a logo.

 not true...

Beastie is a fine mascot but he is not a logo.

 can be both...

if you want a BSD with a beastie as a logo, go fork your own where
 you are master

is this valid for everybody that does not agree with the contest winner?

get FreeBSD into a greater market share.

   why?

No you can't. But those directories cannot be written to by normal
 users.

 aware of that...

For finer-graines access control, you can try Mandatory Access Control,
 see .e.g. mac(4) and ugidfw(8) or mac_mls(4) and setfmac(8).

 thank you.. will try those...

i have a new 5.4R installation on t30 thinkpad. trying to get the sound

adding:
device pcm

doesn't work. it used to work with 5.3. adding 'device sound' didn't do
much. when i start x i get 'No volume control elements and/or devices

is there any other driver for the 'SoundBlaster compatible' sound card?
which one should i use instead of pcm?

thanks

Hi. The handbook has pretty good sound documentation on how to get
 started:

 http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/sound-setup.html

 I personally would:

 1) kldload snd_driver to find out what driver my card needed
 2) Then compile device sound and my sound driver into the kernel as the
 handbook says.

 Hope that helps.
