Usb printers take the same port deterministically?
Hi, I have two usb printers on my freebsd machine and I'm using cups. One of the things I've done is publish a raw (no driver) printer for each of them and use that to share them with other machines in the house that have drivers. My problem is that every once in a while, when I boot up, the order of the printers on the usb ports seems to change. For example, right now I've got: Jun 4 11:24:34 foo kernel: ulpt0: Brother HL-2140 series, class 0/0, rev 2.00/1.00, addr 2 on uhub1 Jun 4 11:24:34 foo kernel: ulpt0: using bi-directional mode Jun 4 11:28:13 foo kernel: ulpt1: EPSON USB2.0 Printer (Hi-speed), class 0/0, rev 2.00/1.00, addr 2 on uhub7 But when I lost power the other night the machine came up with them reversed -- the brother on ulpt1 and the epson on ulpt0. As far as I can tell, cups printers.conf ties to a particular port. So, you can probably see where this is going... when they bind in the wrong order and someone prints I get a ton of crap printed out and waste a ton of paper. How can I make it so that a particular printer binds to a particular usb port deterministically? Re: Usb printers take the same port deterministically?
Thanks, Warren. Works great, mostly :) I actually need the unlpt* device because of publishing the raw printers. Hooking the attach/detach of those device names directly did not work. Adding an action to the ulpt device does work... but I then ran into the problem of pulling the number out of the $device variable to figure out what port just attached. After some messing around (I tried to match the device and serial variables) I gave up and just made two entries per printer: one for ulpt0 and one for ulpt1 (see below). Just because I'm a pain, how does this work if you have two printers from the same vendor? Epson's product code 0x0009, for example, means high speed usb 2.0 printer. So I'm guessing, really, that any epson printer would match? After some messing around (I tried to match the device and serial variables) I gave up and just made two entries per printer: one for ulpt0 and one for ulpt1 (see below). action can be a whole script. Of course the quoting can get ugly. Here's what I use for a scanner. The backtick portion was from someone on the mailing lists. Can't recall who came up with it, but they deserve credit anyway: attach 20 { device-name ugen[0-9].[0-9]; match vendor 0x04b8; match product 0x010a; action usb_devaddr=`echo $device-name | sed 's#^ugen##'` \ chown root:saned /dev/usb/${usb_devaddr}.* \ chmod 0660 /dev/usb/${usb_devaddr}.* \ su saned -c '/usr/local/bin/scanbuttond \ -s /usr/local/etc/scanbuttond/buttonpressed.sh \ -S /usr/local/etc/scanbuttond/initscanner.sh \ -b /usr/local/lib/libscanbtnd-backend_epson.so'; }; usb_devaddr is created by removing ugen from device-name. Then it sets owner and permissions on the device and runs scanbuttond as user saned. Just because I'm a pain, how does this work if you have two printers from the same vendor? Based on the number of problems associated with this issue (there's this thread, the aforementioned Mac thread, and the cups 1.2 - no output thread), would it be worthwhile to create a new Port named cups-devel (keeping the 1.2.x codebase) and downgrade the existing cups to the latest 1.1.x version until the bugs have been ironed out on the 1.2.x branch (or at least adding an entry to /usr/ports/ UPDATING to warn those updating)? Would 1.2.1 fix these issues (that is the current stable version whereas FreeBSD's CUPS is at 1.2.0), or perhaps the 1.3svn branch? I am unsure where the current problems lay (on the CUPS side, on how it is installed in the FreeBSD environment, or on the FreeBSD environment itself). Earlier in this thread, the issues were primarily related with permissions (since, it was mentioned, CUPS is trying to run with a more reasonable set of permissions instead of via 'root'), but now they appear to be configuration specific. Hello Rico, Thank you for your reply. Your workaround may only work until you reboot your machine and /dev/unlpt0 is re-permission'd. To make that fix more permanent, you will need to add the following to your /etc/ devfs.rules file (feel free to modify the 0660 to something more of your liking). [system=10] add path 'unlpt*' mode 0660 group cups add path 'ulpt*' mode 0660 group cups And, add the following to your /etc/rc.conf file. devfs_system_ruleset=system These were outlined earlier on in this thread. Do you have other computers that network print to your printer (and if so, does network printing work for you)? Thank you for your reply. I hadn't ever set this printer up with cups before today, though. It's using gutenprint. JN Check the error log for more verbose messages (located in /var/log/cups/ or from the cups web interface). I just discovered the web interface, so I'll keep an eye on it. From what I've read while trying to solve my failure is that some of the backends/drivers don't work properly with the new cups. We're probably dealing with several simultaneous failures that need to be worked out. That's the conclusion I'm coming to as well. My sense so far is that most of the issues stem from the new cups trying to do as little as possible as root and from other pieces assuming / requiring that they will be run as root. Obviously the /dev/ulpt permissions thing is a result of this. Another case in point is the cups-pdf backend. It stopped working after the cups upgrade until I made it setuid root. FWIW, cups is working with an Epson 777 and the gimp-print drivers using /dev/unlpt0. It seems to work as well as it did before once I got the permissions issue worked out. Good deal. My network printers at work are also working since the upgrade, so all hope is not lost. I'm not sure what all the hide/unhide stuff in the default rules does. Issuing a /etc/rc.d/devfs restart /should/ cause ownership and permissions to change - at least it did for me. You can always unplug the USB cable or power-cycle the printer to test it. From what I've read while trying to solve my failure is that some of the backends/drivers don't work properly with the new cups. We're probably dealing with several simultaneous failures that need to be worked out. FWIW, cups is working with an Epson 777 and the gimp-print drivers using /dev/unlpt0. It seems to work as well as it did before once I got the permissions issue worked out. USB Printers
Hi, We are currently a Linux shop and have been considering moving to FreeBSD for performance reasons. We (actually I) tried to set up a FreeBSD box but was unable to get my Postscript (Brother HL-5050) USB printer to work and can't seem to find much information about it in the docs. Thanks in advance for any pointers. Dave Armstrong ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
usb printers
I'm currently looking for a new low-end inkjet printer. After checking out gimp-print support, most of the newer Epson and HP's are supported. However most of the new printers are usb, and I don't have much experience with printing to usb under FreeBSD. Once connected would the device just be something like /dev/usb0 (on FreeBSD 5) or do you need a usb to parallel converter? There is no mention of usb printers in the handbook. Would appreciate advice and recommendations from others, on what to get and what to avoid. -- Khairil Yusof [EMAIL PROTECTED] signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

A little rusty on this but hopefully it will help some. I had a HP 812c running on 4.5 awhile back through usb. Used apsfilter with gimp-print or the HP drivers, but it didn't work the greatest. Could've been a misconfiguration on my part. On redhat 8 on the same comp printer have had excellent results with CUPS hpijs. Haven't tried CUPS on bsd 5.0 yet.
