I contacted Western Digital and (as expected) didn't get anywhere. They claim
they don't support OSs other than Windows and OS X, so once you ask questions
beyond that, they are less than helpful.
I did make some progress in terms of potentially determining the cause of the
different behavior.
I'm cc:'ing the list again. (Hans and I had done some offline work I didn't
want to spam the list with, since I wasn't sure if I was giving him the logs he
was looking for.)

Well, the drive doesn't actually work on the other computer, so

+1 :-) Good idea to introduce

Got a new one of these with the same model number as the previous versions, but
still different behavior this time.
When you connect it, it says this:
usbd_setup_device_desc: getting device descriptor at addr 2 failed,
USB_ERR_STALLED
ugen1.2: at usbus1
umass0:
on usbus1
umass0: SCSI over B
I've made a minor
breakthrough. After some mucking about with dd, I was able to get the
system to acknowledge that the "bad" drive exists. I was then able to
reformat the drive. By that I mean I performed the following
operations:
# fdisk -BI /dev/da0
# bsdlabel -Bw /dev/da0s1
# newfs /dev/
I am resending because my last message came out as a big wad of unbroken text.
I don't know why. It looks normal in my outbox. I apologize in advance if the
same thing happens with this one, but it looks just fine on my screen now.
Wish me luck!
