[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #18054] some way to delete saved files is needed

2011-04-23 Thread anonymous

Follow-up Comment #11, bug #18054 (project freeciv):

Response to comment#9 (Andreas Rosdal):

I was originally directed to http://gna.org/projects/freeciv/ by Marko
Lindqvis and there found a click leading to bug reports here.
I shall look at the other link you suggested.

Possible suggestions on deleting saved games:

(1)
A command line function, possible syntax:

deletesaved x y

can delete games from #x to #y.
(The saved games are now numbered, starting from 1.)

Instead of numbers, you can also use date-time, although it would be heavier
work for the user.

(2)
Keep at most the N latest saved games, e.g. N=256

(3)
Having both (1) and (2) can be nice, as then the player can control which
saved games to keep, in case there are particular favorites or some such,
however it would require some extra lines of programming.

Follow-up Comment #10, bug #18054 (project freeciv):

Response to comments #7 (Brandon J van Every) and #8 (David Lawe):

I played Freeciv.net.
I am not a developer so I cannot tell client from server.

I play as "yuki".
I have not found a way to have my username in bug report automatically.

Follow-up Comment #9:

Thanks for the bugreport to Freeciv.net. The savegame support is pretty
experimental in the freeciv.net web client. I'll try to improve this, if you
have some more specific suggestions about how to solve this.

Further, this bugreport should have been submitted to the Freeciv.net
project, at http://code.google.com/p/freeciv-forever/issues/list . I hope the
Freeciv.org maintainers and I can find a good solution so that users can
submit bugreports easily and correctly. Perhaps mark these bugs  with
category 'freeciv.net' which I just discovered.

I'm still interested in merging the two projects, by the way...

"Anonymous" [if that is his real name] eventually revealed in another bug
that he is not using any Freeciv installation, but rather the web interface to
www.freeciv.net .

What version of Freeciv are you playing? Both the client and the server.

Follow-up Comment #6, bug #18054 (project freeciv):

Response to comment #4:

I would give whatever information is required as soon as you tell me what
information I need to write.

I have not played the saved games with any options as I did not notice for a
long time that there is in fact a command line interface. When I noticed it, I
only increased the timeout and asked for nothing else.

When I started new games the old save-games were NOT REPLACED,
When I press the button "Load" it opens a list of 1304 saved games.
Saves 1 to 147 are for the game where I played one nation from 2800 BC to 280
AD, saves 148 to 241 are for the game where I played another nation from 4000
BC to 160 AD, and saves 242 to 1304 are for the game where I played a third
nation from 2700 BC to 1610 AD.

All the old saves I tried right now can be loaded just as well as the last
save.

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #18054] some way to delete saved files is needed

2011-04-20 Thread David Lowe

Follow-up Comment #5, bug #18054 (project freeciv):

'Maybe adding a "max number of auto savefiles to keep" option would be a nice
idea, but if, as David Lowe said, is very difficult, we will keep deleting
files manually.'

I was actually referring to the difficulty of writing/maintaining a whole new
Windows GUI for the Windows filesystem, another for Mac, etc. Your idea of a
new server option is quite good, and since it doesn't involve much new GUI
should be fairly easy to create. Why didn't i think of that?

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #18054] some way to delete saved files is needed

2011-04-20 Thread anonymous

Follow-up Comment #4, bug #18054 (project freeciv):

The save files are stored on the computer which runs the server. So you
either connect to a server or you have the same savefiles on all computers.
Due to the fact that you gave no information I can't say ...

Furthermore, freeciv generates the savegames according to a fixed scheme.
Thus, if you start a new game, the old savegames will be replaced. But there
are options which change the default behaviour. If you change the savename
setting the save files will have other names - thus, the old ones will not be
overwritten.

If you do not depend on the savegames for each turn you can use another
option: saveturn. It allows you to define for which turns freeciv should
create a (auto)save file.

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #18054] some way to delete saved files is needed

2011-04-20 Thread anonymous

Follow-up Comment #3, bug #18054 (project freeciv):

>From the comment of David Lowe it appears as if the saved files were stored
on my computer.

However it does not look so, as I access the game from totally different
locations and still see the same list.

Another error in David Lowe's comment seems to be the statement that when one
starts a new game the new saved files overwrite the old ones: I did try that
before and it was not like David says.

Obviously David does not know what he is talking about.

The problem is not in the use of a Windows Explorer but in filling up by junk
the server space Freeciv rents from the host.

This is why at least some primitive command line "Delete" or similar command
is needed.

I have searched "/help commands" but found nothing of the sort.

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #18054] some way to delete saved files is needed

2011-04-20 Thread David Lowe

Follow-up Comment #1, bug #18054 (project freeciv):

It would be a very bad policy if freeciv were to become so bloated that it
included it's own file browser, music player, email client, etc. You already
have Windows Explorer on your system; please use that. In any case, when you
start a new game the new save files will overwrite the old ones; there is a
natural limit to their accumulation.

If somebody did volunteer to craft a tool for managing save files, then it
really should be a separate tool and not be integrated into the client.
However, such a tool would differ significantly between a Windows version, a
Mac version, etc. and so would be inherently difficult to maintain.

not needed ever again.
