Follow-up Comment #6, bug #22607 (project freeciv):

I'd missed that this symptom was already reported in bug #21038. Since it
looks like the root cause is the same, I'm closing this as a duplicate.

(The root cause is a bug in Gtk2. On Windows we're currently stuck with an
ancient version of Gtk2 libraries because upstream haven't packaged a newer
one. The original reporter could try our experimental Gtk3 builds to see if
they're less broken in this regard; see the other bug.)

Since I checked:
> In addition to ver2.5.0beta1, this bug occurs in all of the 
> version 2.4.0, 2.4.1, 2.4.2, and 2.4.3.
All of these Windows packages were released with Gtk+ 2.24.10, so that is
consistent with this being a duplicate of bug #21038.

Does changing it make a difference?
I have also tried some fonts, but nothing changed.
Maybe there is no relationship between the type of font and this bug.

Could you test a) and b) if text is disappear?

a) Check sensitivity to GtkSpinButton widgets
e.g. Game Setting dialog or Diplomat trade dialog, and switch tabs a few
times
b) Can you input any texts or commands?
e.g. chat/command line at main game window (GtkEntry widgets)

Never mind, I realised I could try this on Windows myself.

With the Japanese localisation, 2.3.5, 2.4.3, and 2.5.0-beta1 show the symptom
(on my non-Japanese-localised Windows 7 system).

The only exception I noticed was the help text for individual technologies,
which rendered plausibly correct (although I can't read Japanese to confirm
it).

I didn't find a setting for the Help Text font that made a difference (apart
from to the tech help), most help topics remained blank. Defaulted to
"Monospace Normal"; tried Bold, Sans, Serif, Arial.

Didn't try any other locales on Windows.

I note there's a scrollbar on the blank page, so it's probably not empty; it
looks like the characters aren't being drawn properly.

Details:

When you play freeciv 2.5beta1 in japanese,
all of the text in help browser disappears.
But in english, this bug doesn't occur.
