Re: [Freedos-user] Freedos-user Digest, Vol 302, Issue 1

2009-08-27 Thread Alexandru Fira
Just copy the qbasic.exe interpreter anywhere in your Windows XP computer,
for example on the desktop. For running it just double click on qbasic.exe and
off it goes. Windows XP has NTVDM (New Technology Virtual DOS Machine) that can
run a lot of DOS programs, including Qbasic.
There is no need to download or buy anything. It is easy and simple.
When you program and you save some .bas files these are saved in the folder
where Qbasic is. For example, if Qbasic sits on the desktop, the .bas files
will be saved on the desktop. If you copy it to another folder, it will save
the .bas files into that folder.
It is good to set your OS so that when you double click on a .bas file it is
opened with Qbasic, in case you have some folders with qbasic programs
scattered around, so as to be easier to open them. But I used to have several
copies of Qbasic in my PC.

Re: [Freedos-user] freedos installation using usb drive

2008-12-31 Thread Alexandru Fira

If you do not have a CD drive for your PC, then it would be useful to buy a
USB CD or DVD-RW drive. It is always useful, so it is not a waste of money. You
can use later for a lot of interesting things. And it is not very expensive,
around 100 RON in Romania, so 32 dollars.
I have Freedos on a stick now together with Damn Small Linux and Puppy linux.
The MBR was messed up on my stick and could not make the Fat32 partition
bootable, so I edited the menu.lst file in Grub to look like this:

default 0
timeout 10
title DSL
root (hd0,1)
kernel /linux24 ramdisk_size=10 lang=us quiet vga=791 frugal
initrd /minirt24.gz
title Freedos
root (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1
boot
title Puppy Linux 400 frugal
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
kernel /puppy400/vmlinuz pmedia=idehd psubdir=puppy400
initrd /puppy400/initrd.gz

I bolded what should be added to make the Fat32 partition bootable even on a
messed up memory stick.
This can easily be done by booting Slax or Puppy Linux and simply writing that
code for Freedos (of course, taking in account on which partition it is.)
I am using Freedos for some DOS games now and I am very sad I cannot access the
Internet under freedos.

Yes, you are right, a new hardware may be a great surprise for Windows XP
whereas under Linux things went smoothly
when putting the HD into another computer.

I wish a Happy New Year to everybody !

Hi!

I tried to install Freedos on a 2 GB Jetflash on which the MBR
was already messed up. When installing, the system files and folders
were copied OK on the Jetflash but then it failed to boot up. GRUB gave
 strange error messages.

Which?

At first, error 17 if I can remember well, but that was also before installing
Freedos, as I failed to install some other Linuxes.
Then I tried to install TinyME again and then Freedos and deleted the
non-functional GRUB (under Slax run from the live CD) and
the error message was a complicated text, which contained something like only
minimal bash-like commands are supported and some instructions.
All the commands in the list failed except for reboot.

Finally I installed Damn Small Linux and Puppy
on the stick and I also have a more than 400 MB Fat32 partition. Can I
install freedos on it ? What should I do to make it boot Freedos ?

What did you do when you tried?? SYS? Makebootfat? Sys-freedos-linux?

Yes you can make single partitions bootable with all of those... You
then add a menu item. See the MANY howtos for booting Windows and DOS
with GRUB... Most common problem is that you formatted with mkdosfs
and forgot to set the partition start location properly. If your DOS
partition is the first on the disk then a typical setting would be
using the option --offset=63 with sys-freedos-linux'es sys-freedos.pl
(note that you also need Perl and Nasm installed to run that one).

www.ywesee.com/pmwiki.php/Site/FlashingBiosOfALinuxServer

With Puppy (frugal install) I had to modify the menu.lst file in Damn
Small Linux's GRUB so as to be able to boot Puppy.

In what way?

I added at the end, in Linux Mint,

2008-10-22 Thread Alexandru Fira
Linux Mint is on the hard disk, no problem with it
and there is a frugal Puppy installation.
Damn Small Linux and Puppy (again) are on my stick.
The puppy installation was simply copied from the hard disk
and the menu.lst file in GRUB modified.
Please tell me what boot file to indicate in Damn Small Linux's GRUB
and what to write there to boot Freedos after I install it to the DOs FAT32
partition
on my stick.

By the way, I will redo an experiment with deleting GRUB or deleting
indications from the menu.lst
file and see what happens. I will keep a GRUB folder to throw it back into
place
at the end of the experiment, just as I played with NTLDR and System32 under
Windows
but now I have much work to do and I spoiled my experimental hard disk.
Mechanical problems that I cannot fix in any way.

I added at the end, in Linux Mint,

title PuppyLinux
   root (hd0,0)
   kernel /puppy400/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PMEDIA=idehd
   initrd /puppy400/initrd.gz
In Damn Small Linux I added

root (hd0,1)
kernel /puppy400/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PMEDIA=idehd
initrd /puppy400/initrd.gz

I think Nevasca would be very useful, anyway, more useful than Damn Small
Linux but it most probably will not replace Windows and Linux. I am sure it
will be useful for hardware with low RAM (not only old hardware), maybe many
household and industrial machines, cell phones, highly miniaturized and
portable microcomputers, ATMs, toys. This is just an opinion, however.

I like especially to see Jim's opinion here.

The question is what are the goals of the FreeDOS project and what not...

Is the goal to become only a 100 % MS-DOS replacement or also higher
goals? Like to become an alternative for desktop end users, a competitor
to windows/linux?

Do you consider big enhancements on the website?

Or do you want just to continue all like the current state?

Interesting questions to answer.

I am asking this because of a upcoming project called nevasca. It's
basically about to create a new operating system (distro), an
alternative to windows/linux. Currently everything is in planing and
discussing stage and about to talk with people likely to support the
project in any way.

The first homepage is http://www.nevasca.co.nr and the forum's website

[Freedos-user] Installed Freedos at home

partition from under Ubuntu but I cannot open the

Running programs is easy, I just type the name of the
program at the command prompt and then press enter.

Unless you have a specific need to boot your PC with FreeDOS, I would
recommend running FreeDOS inside Linux DOSEmu. This is mostly how I
