Sorry it took so long to respond, and yes, that did indeed work – thanks!

I misinterpreted the note above the Shared Folder section of the machine’s
settings and thought it meant that shared folders were not possible at all lol.

Hi, try to create them with the vm powered down.

I also recommend that you name the folders in uppercase and following the dos
file name conventions. If not, make sure that you specify the /lfn switch with
vmsmount.

Well, first of all, connecting to the Internet via TCP is not "connecting to

How to do that, so you can access shares, well, that depends on a lot of

Forwarding some thoughts by me and some details provided by Akshay:

DIR on D: caused critical errors for each attempt to read any DOS
area sector, "general failure" with abort ignore retry fail prompt.

The command FORMAT D triggered a JEMMEX exception 0C, in other words
a stack fault, because SP wrapped around the 64k boundary. Registers:

CS:EIP c000:eb, SS:ESP=1225:, EBP=f6f6, EFLAGS=33083, CR0=8...11,
errc=0, cr2=0, EAX=c8990e0d, EBX=7, ECX=ESP, EDX=ds, esi=0, edi=0,
DS=a9a, ES=2c3, fs=0, gs=0, code at CS:IP is cf 80 ff 00 74 06 80 ff,
so there is an IRET at CS:IP. "Press ESC to abort program".

Recommended next step: Try without JEMMEX. I wonder whether this is
a problem with UMB mapping, with VGA BIOS protected mode usage, or
something different with protected mode, memory and memory managers.

Re: [Freedos-user] Need help installing on virt-manager

2020-01-09 Thread Akshay via Freedos-user
Hi,

I'm running virt-manager version 2.0.0 under Debian 10.2. The Hard Drive and
the ISO were under IDE from the beginning. Simple searches did not yield the
libvert version. "visrh --version" gives 5.0.0

I hate to run away like this, but I'm currently very busy, and so I
transitioned to VirtualBox, which worked fine.

Another quick question- what does error 0C from format indicate? It printed
values of all registers. I was trying to access D: without running format on
it, then ran format with wrong options for the first few times. But the help
page does not have 0C as a part of the error ranges (I think). I'm not having
problems now, but am just curious.

Also, I'll retry virt-manager when I get time. Thanks for taking time to reply.

I'm running virt-manager on OpenBSD which is version 1.5.1 and libvirt/virtd on

Re: [Freedos-user] Need help installing on virt-manager

2020-01-07 Thread Akshay via Freedos-user
Thanks for the reply.

When creating the VM, I choose the option boot from CD/DVD, and the iso is
visible as CD/DVD. When I reboot the first time, the newly partitioned hard
drive is detected (and 55AA is not found). When this happens, I force shutdown
the VM, modify it to add the CD/DVD, and it is detected as so, and boots (then
encounters the installer files not found issue)

As for qemu, I am *not* running a command at all. Is there a way to see what
command is being run "behind" virtual machine. Perhaps I did not get your
question.

As for virt-manager, the reason I am using it is Debian Buster supports it (I
think I read this on the wiki), and not VirtualBox.

This is definitely a cd visibility issue as Louis suggests.

Basically in 1.2, there is a floppy image on the cd-rom. On the Legacy CD,
floppy emulation is handled by the BIOS. On the Standard CD, emulation is done
through syslinux/memdisk. During the boot process of the emulated floppy,
FreeDOS loads device drivers to talk to a cd/dvd. If they fail to work, the
installer will not be able to find the packages on the cd-rom. This can happen
for several reasons. The main cause on real hardware is the driver not
supporting the drive is it’s default configuration. On virtual hardware, I
suspect it would be an improperly configured virtual machine. There are other
reasons. But, those are probably the most likely.

There are additional options to do an install of 1.2. One that seldom gets
mentioned is the multiple HD install method. Basically, you just copy the
entire contents of the CD or USB stick image to a secondary hard drive. Boot
any of the FreeDOS 1.2 install media (Floppy, Legacy CD, etc). Run the
installer. When it does it’s package search, it will detect them on the
secondary HD and use them to install FreeDOS onto the Primary HD.

Yeah, `virt-manager` is (IMO) not as awesome VirtualBox or even plain
`qemu` commands. I experienced the same "double" boot to install
issue with KVM on RHEL7. I guess it is the way `virt-manager` works.
However, in the end, I was able to install w/o issue (over `cockpit`)
after the 2nd boot.

Are you setting the ISO as the `cdrom` device or as a bootable hard
drive/USB drive? The files may not be appropriately visible in the
way the installer is expecting.

What is your `qemu` command line? Before running the installer, what
drive is ISO visible as?

[Freedos-user] Need help installing on virt-manager

2020-01-07 Thread Akshay via Freedos-user
Hi,

I'm trying to install FreeDOS 1.2 using virt-manager (a GUI for qemu) using the
standard CD. According to the tutorial, the first time I boot from the ISO,
fdisk runs and I use it to create a partition of 1GB, mark it as active.

I was first having problems rebooting, but that turned out to be a qemu issue,
I added the iso manually as the CD/DVD and enabled boot menu, so that I could
boot from the dvd the next time too.

On the second boot, the setup goes till "gathering some information to prepare
for the installation", and then gives an error message, "unable to locate
installation packages. A reboot might help". Upon reboot the same message
occurs.

I checked the md5sum of the iso, and it's correct. To be sure, the output of
the command is 'd5584871b0e35bc1d6656dce9eb4af51  FD12CD.iso'.

Please tell me to provide additional information if required.

Hi!

Most old DOS games only work with ISA soundcards. If your
soundcard is PCI, USB, AC97 or HDA, only a few more modern
DOS programs such as certain media players can use them in
the general case. The good news is that your computer seems
to be old enough to still "know" what ISA slots are: Some
older PCI soundcards come with drivers for such mainboards
which create the illusion of ISA soundcards for DOS games.

Your ESS Solo is exactly in that category: An old PCI sound
card which has drivers which make it look a bit like an ISA
sound card on mainboards with DDMA and other classic features.

The drivers use tricks to bridge some signals, but the Solo
hardware already knows how to be similar to ISA soundcards:
Chances are good that Adlib/OPL3/FM or wave/DSP work in some
games on your old mainboard, with suitably adapted settings.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e14dFZWi2eI mentions some
ESS PCI Audio DOS Device Drivers 2.30D / 2.31D

Another approach and driver or setup tool are listed here:

Yes.

But, I don’t really see a need to do a slow full format on the drive
partition in most situations.

Up to you. :-)

Actually, on an older hard drive, I would in fact recommend to do a
full format, so every sector on the drive/partition is actually
accessed and would reveal any possible problems with that drive, as a
quick format is only clearing/rewriting the basic root directory
information on the beginning of the drive/partition. And then you
might run into mysterious problem slater on, when those possibly bad
sectors are being accessed as they just have to be assumed working by
a quick format...

Ralf

You are correct. Old drives, absolutely.
However... New drives, no real benefit.

Well, out friend states
I wanted to revive my old computer (a Compaq Prosignia 150) that
originally had Windows 98

That means it is likely a 19-20 year old AMD-K6 based computer, which
most likely has a first generation SATA or even still a PATA drive.

For me, that just calls to do a full format of the hard drive...

Okay, so I guess I did it correctly. Now that I have FreeDOS installed, how
do I get sound to work? I have a ESS Solo-1, I believe. I forgot to copy
any drivers before I installed FreeDOS.

One thought, you could replace your c: drive with
a cf chip from Komputerbay on Amazon. Just
pull out the old hard drive and replace it with an
IDE adapter and cf chip. You can save your old
c: drive so can get back your old system by
just plugging it back in, if you ever want 98 back.

Yep, that was exactly my thought process. :)

So to more accurately target what you want to do, I would not delete all
partitions, but only the one holding drive C. All the other steps should still

it is an easy fix.

Boot the FreeDOS CD.

It will detect FreeDOS 1.2 is already installed and automatically exit to the
command prompt.

Locate the drive you wish to erase. (Probably C:, maybe D:) use "dir c:" to
verify the correct drive partition.

Format the drive with “format c: /q”

Reboot the FreeDOS CD and go through the install process again.

I would like to do a clean install of FreeDOS though, and makes sure the C:
partition is completely wiped by doing a full format on it and reinstalling
FreeDOS.

Re: [Freedos-user] Need help reformatting disk for clean install of FreeDOS

2019-07-13 Thread Eric Auer

Hi!

Actually if YOU have no problem with Windows 98 files
still being on your FreeDOS C: drive, then there is no
need to format, partition or delete anything. Of course
you are free to use the normal DOS commands to delete
those files which you no longer need. You could even
install a boot manager and make Win98 and DOS available
as boot time choices, with some additional tricks.

I think Mercury assumed that you had problems booting
DOS after installing and that you wanted to completely
get rid of all other operating systems and data on the
disk, so he gave you the steps for that.

Regards, Eric

Thanks for advice! I don’t want to mess with my current partitions though.
Is there a way I can just format the existing C: partition (with the format
command)?

And should I do this from the CD-ROM? If so, how?

Re: [Freedos-user] Need help reformatting disk for clean install of FreeDOS

2019-07-13 Thread Mercury Thirteen via Freedos-user
I would:

1. Run FDISK and delete all partitions
2. Create a single Primary DOS partition and mark it active
3. Exit FDISK and reboot
4. Run FDISK /mbr to fix the boot record
5. Use SYS c: to transfer system files to the hard drive

Then you should be good to go!

[Freedos-user] Need help reformatting disk for clean install of FreeDOS

2019-07-13 Thread HTV04 .
Hi, I’m new to FreeDOS. I wanted to revive my old computer (a Compaq
Prosignia 150) that originally had Windows 98, so I set up a CD-ROM with
the FreeDOS installer.

When I booted from the CD-ROM, everything seemed to be going smoothly. I
had to use the “raw” workaround, though, otherwise I would be given several
“Invalid Opcode” errors. This doesn’t have much to do with the problem I’m
having though, or at least I don’t think so.

Problems arose when I got a message saying that a previous OS was detected
(which was Windows 98), and that I could either continue installing or make
a backup. I searched this up online, and found absolutely no documentation
on this. I came to the conclusion that it would just format my C: drive and
continued. After I started the install however, it just installed all the
files alongside my old ones, so the installer completely skipped the part
where it would format the drive.

So now I have FreeDOS 1.2 installed, but my Windows 98 files still exist.
Is there anyway to replicate the formatting process from the CD-ROM (and
can I run the command from the CD-ROM)? If it involves using the format
command, can you tell me the exact command the installer uses? I kind of
have OCDs for that sort of thing, sorry. I’m looking to do a full format.

I would recommend a change for this in FreeDOS 1.3, to allow clean installs
of FreeDOS in place of the operating system currently installed.

Thanks in advance, and I can’t wait to try out FreeDOS on my old computer!

Hi Chris,

Thank you for the reply. Yes, it can be done manually. But, I wanted it to be
happening automatically i.e. without manual intervention. As it happens with
the other OS boots.

I have boot switch automated between the two OS (FDOS and Linux).

 Ok, then may you present test case? If you have source, which not

Re: [Freedos-user] Need help ... calling COMMAND.COM from C

2006-09-18 Thread Marton

Absolutely, the function is simple... just to see if two directories that
should have the same contents changed. Here it goes (hope it indents well):

int checkdir(void) {
int i, filesize = 0;
FILE *fp, *fp2;

system(dir c:\\data\\base1 c:\\data.dir);
fp = fopen(c:\\data.dir,r);
fp2 = fopen(c:\\dataorig.dir,r);
fseek(fp, 0, SEEK_END);
filesize = ftell(fp);
fseek(fp2, 0, SEEK_END);
if(filesize != ftell(fp2))
  filesize = -1;
rewind(fp); rewind(fp2);

for(i=0;ifilesize;i++)
{
  int file1data = 0, file2data = 0;
  fread(file1data,1,1,fp);
  fread(file2data,1,1,fp2);
  if(file1data != file2data)
break;
}

if(i != filesize)
  return 1;
else
  return 0;

fclose(fp);
fclose(fp2);
remove(c:\\data.dir);
remove(c:\\dataorig.dir);
  }
}

This always returns 1 because the file data.dir gets cut so the compare with
dataorig.dir always fails.

Thanks!!

Sounds great, Arkady. I'm glad my code at least helped to see the bug. Please
let me know if/when you fix it so I try it :)

Thanks!!

Re: [Freedos-user] Need help ... calling COMMAND.COM from C

2006-09-17 Thread Marton

Many thanks for the suggestions but instead of doing stuff in my code...
couldn't we somehow add a delay to FreeCOM before it exits (when called with
/c) so everything gets flushed and it works for everyone? Under command.com
everything works as-is and it is a crime to patch my code instead of doing a
general solution...

Thanks again,
Marton

[Freedos-user] Need help ... calling COMMAND.COM from C

2006-09-16 Thread Johnson Lam
Hi,

Please help Marton (marton=at=argentina.com), he stuck with a C
program calling COMMAND.COM:

Now that I moved onto my next step on my project, another issue
arised...
If I run this:

TestDir.bat:
dir /b c:\testdir d:\dirout.put

The file dirout.put has the directory output...

BUT, if I do it this way:

TestDir2.bat:
command /c dir /b c:\testdir d:\dirout.put

The file dirout.put has the directory output but CUT... it never
reaches the end of the output, it just cuts...

Tried with many command coms and kernel versions...

I really need to do it that way because I'm using the system()
function on my C program and it runs command /c with what to run as
an argument.

Any ideas on that?

Kind regards,
Marton

2006-09-16 Thread Blair Campbell
Hi. It almost sounds to me like the destination file isn't getting
flushed to the disk. I would recommend doing the recirection
internally in the C program, and then you have direct control of the
file.  A simple close(1); open(blah, O_WRONLY); /* system() stuff
here: */ blah blah blah close(1); open(CON, O_WRONLY);
should do but there are also ways to 'save' the original stdout and
restore it later. Get him to contact me for details.

 This is bug in FreeCOM. And this is reason, why in my patches for
FreeCOM I was tried to move command.com placement into bin/ subdirectory,
else (buggy) command.com (may) interfere with building process, but by some
unknown reason you reject this part of patches.

 About manual redirecting: using open(CON) is wrong, because this
prevents using program with redirection. The more so, if program uses
stdio..h, this way is even more wrong. I think, better way is something
like:

int redirfd = open (d:\dirout.put, O_CREAT | O_TRUNC | O_RDWR,
 S_IREAD | S_IWRITE);
if (redirfd != -1) { /* check for error */
  /* if using standard streams from stdio.h: */
  flushall (); /* flush all high level buffers */
  /* now privately store own stdout... */
  int oldstdout = dup (1);
  /* ...and open redirection */
  dup2 (redirfd, 1); close (redirfd);

  ...now do system(), spwan*() or exec*()...

  dup2 (oldstdout, 1); close (oldstdout);
