The system you link to above indicates that it is shipped with FreeDOS,
likely to circumvent the requirement from Micro$soft that OEM vendors
can't ship any systems "without" an OS.

However, at the same time, the system in the link above is shipped
without an optical drive, so an error message about the CDROM
driver/MSCDEX replacement not being able to load is to be expected.

In case the OP indeed comes back to the mailing list, a bit more info if
the purchase of that system without Windows (of any version) was indeed
intended. My guess, without seeing a screenshot is that FreeDOS is
already in some form pre-installed and pretty much would be "ready to
use", beside the missing or unsupported (SATA?/USB?) CD-ROM/DVD drive...

Either way, a bit more info from the OP could help to solve the mystery...

That one does. What Stan says he got was this:
http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/DT.SPMAA.001

It's intended as a media center device, and shipped with Win8.

It's not clear whether FreeDOS is also on it, or what Stan is rying to do.

Still, it seems that at least some series are shipped with FreeDOS:

http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/Acer_Revo_Nettop_Celeron_887_4GB_750GB_Shared_No_Opt_WiFi__Free_Dos_DT.SMCEK.003/version.asp

As Eric said, FreeDOS is probably only used as an easy way of checking
that the machine works (or boots, at least). IIRC, there were some
stories about OEMs having some kind of contracts with Microsoft, that
were forbidding them to sell PCs without an OS (but I might have got it
wrong).

In any case, if I were going to buy a PC, I'd certainly refuse to pay
for a Windows license that I have no use of. So FreeDOS is a good fit
here, as a "throw-away" system.

The Revo is a media center device, shipping with Windows 8.1.
Shipping it with only FreeDOS would be senseless, as it couldn't do
what it was intended to do.

That only means that your CD/DVD driver did not load: Looking at the Acer
website, the Revo is a tiny PC without CD/DVD drive, so that is normal.

> I'm only left with the command prompt and have no idea how to continue.

That is normal for DOS in general - you type commands at the prompt. But
you may want to install some graphical goodies and use those. For example:

https://code.google.com/p/nanox-microwindows-nxlib-fltk-for-dos/wiki/Screenshots

I am sure the other members on the list can make more suggestions.
However, if you wanted to do "the usual" with graphical text editors,
spreadsheets, internet, video-phones and so on, you probably want a more
"heavy" operating system than DOS. Today, DOS can do some cool things (see
above: graphical internet etc.) compared to the "old days", but you still
miss the ability to do multiple things at the same time on a graphical
desktop with plug and play for all sorts of hardware. For example you plug
some USB memory stick and a file manager automatically opens. That is not
what DOS will normally do for you. But at least you can now install
drivers for DOS to use the USB stick at all :-)

You probably have FreeDOS on your Acer Revo because Acer wanted to sell a
complete PC so you can see that everything works. And they probably did
not want to spend money for Windows or effort to fine-tune Linux for the
Revo. Or maybe you got the Revo 2nd hand, excluding Windows. So you simply
have DOS and a prompt... You may enjoy exploring it a bit, now that you
have it anyway. There is a lot of information about DOS on the internet
:-)

Regards, Eric

PS: Have a nice holiday season everybody :-)

The Revo RL80 is a media center device running Windows 8.1 64 bit.
It's not clear what your problem is. Are you saying the RL80 won't
successfully boot into Win8? This is an Acer problem, and FreeDOS
probably won't help you.

FreeDOS is a 16 bit system, and not supported on 64bit machines. You
would need to run a VM and run FreeDOS inside of that.

How are you attempting to load FreeDOS? What are you loading *from*?

FreeDOS apparently doesn't recognize the hardware, which isn't a big surprise.

And *why* are you trying to load FreeDOS? What do you plan to do with
it if you can get it to run?
