Re: [Freedos-user] Why are you using FreeDOS?
Actually if the CPU is too fast in DOS the software cannot program the radio so most ham radio operator's look for slow CPU's (old computers) and load DOS as the sole operating system this is true especially for older Motorola radio's - Johnny KD5LWU Cortez, CO On 8/4/2014 6:14 PM, dmccunney wrote: > On Mon, Aug 4, 2014 at 8:05 PM, Corbin Davenport > wrote: >> If it's radio equipment that the software manages, it might not run in the >> Windows command line or DOSBox. Multitasking OSes don't provide underlying access to the hardware of the computer they are running on, because the app can't assume it's the only thing running with full control of the machine. But radio equipment will be seen as an attached peripheral, and there shouldn't be any problem about a DOS app in a VM or an emulator communicating with it. __ Dennis https://plus.google.com/u/0/105128793974319004519 -- Infragistics Professional Build stunning WinForms apps today! If it's radio equipment that the software manages, it might not run in the Windows command line or DOSBox. It probably needs direct access to the hardware, which I don't think either provide. I have several friends who are hams. One is a Linux user, and the other is in a pure Windows environment. They don't seem to have problems. And depending on the DOS software, it will run under Windows. If you use 32 bit Windows, like XP or (I believe) 32 bit Win7, 15 bit apps are supported, and many DOS programs will run in a console solution through NTVDM. Re: [Freedos-user] Why are you using FreeDOS?
For almost 30 years I have written various computer-based tests for studies in psychology and related fields. These required timing accuracy comparable to the traditional electromechanical testing devices, so that DOS (initially AppleDOS and then PC-DOS) was the operating system of choice. Essentially, I could not afford to have the OS attending to the many functions that I did not need when I wanted it to be recording data. I turned to FreeDOS when PCs running MS-DOS were becoming uncommon and I needed to package the operating system with the tests. I switched from Borland Turbo C to Watcom C a few years ago. It is getting more difficult to have a "plug-in" DOS environment that can just boot up to run tests on the variety of PCs out there and I now rely on Tcl-Tk under Linux whenever I can. I'm not using it yet, but want to because of some amateur radio software that was written to run in DOS and won't run in Windows. jhhaynes at earthlink dot net -- Infragistics Professional Build stunning WinForms apps today! I started using PCs in the days when the original IBM-PC with 4.77mhz Intel 8088 processor, CGA graphics, 256-640K of RAM and dual 360K full height 5.25" floppy drives was first appearing on corporate desktops, usually as an engine to run Lotus 1,2,3, with a secondary usage of running WordStar to do word processing. I had fun tinkering back then, figuring out how to get the best performance out of limited hardware. FreeDOS is an opportunity to dust off unused skills and play. I spend most of my time these days in Windows and Linux, and most of what I do simply can't be done under DOS. The machine FreeDOS lives on multi-boots Windows and a couple of flavors of Linux (and is itself an experiment to see what sort of results I can coax out of low-end hardware without throwing money at it.) FreeDOS is a hobby I do for fun, played with when I have a few spare minutes. I don't try to use DOS on a day-to-days to do the things I normally do on a computer. It might be *possible* to do some of them, but would involve limitations and be more trouble than the effort was worth. It's why my attitude in some discussions here is "DOS is the wrong tool for that job. Use the right one." > Jarda __ Dennis https://plus.google.com/u/0/105128793974319004519 -- Infragistics Professional Build stunning WinForms apps today!
