 Suggestions?

1) fix space bar on keyboard (probably best idea, may require parts?)

2) if unable to fix, buy another keyboard

3) if unable to buy another keyboard, place weights on thumbs to assist.

 Suggestions?

Check for item/gunk under space bar.

Remove space bar by gripping upper right and left hand edge and pull
up and back until it unsnaps.

Brush away anything which isn't plastic, rubber or white in color.

When reinstalling the space bar, first insert the ends of bottom U
shaped metal rod through the bottom loops of the pair of raised metal
loops on both sides of the space bar mounting area. Then push the
space bar onto the tips of the nylon springs until you hear the
snapping/crunching sounds as the tips and the space bar engage.

Hope this helps.

Even though the specs say windows only, these work just fine with a

As you can tell at a glance, the main difference among the offerings
for these gadgets is the price you pay for them more than their actual
capabilities.

A while back (don't remember the exact date) I picked up one of these
for something like $9 (??) including shipping from China via ebay. I
doubt there is that much difference in the chipset used in the USB
attached devices.

My guess ... and it's only a guess naturally ... is that the power
supply is a very large percentage of the manufacturing costs of one of
these devices. So IMO it all depends on how much you worry about the
quality of the power supply you are getting. To be frank, I have yet
to try out the PSU that I got with that cheap USB multi-adapter. I
*HAVE* used the adapter, I just chose to power it from another supply.
(See my signature below ;-)

Some people think that the extra hand holding they get from OWC
(macsales.com) makes them well worth the extra premium they charge for
their products. That's a personal call each person has to make, no?

I can say if money was not a consideration for me I'd go with the OWC
gadget. But I just happen to have a thing for indicator lights. I'm
not even sure I care whether they add value or not ...

We usually buy a year's worth at a time.

I donno what the actual rated shelf life is, but I've had two year
old color cartridges refuse to print.

If you are like me, you have been paying very, very, very, high
prices for black ink, so why not find and buy enough to last a long
time if the shelf life is ok.

There is just NO reason for blank ink to be expensive. Depends on
the printer, if course, but there are a lot of high quality 3rd party
cartridges out there, many in the $3 to $8 range. You can also
refill your own cartridges. Ink when bought in a large bottle is
cheap!

Currently, we use a lot of GG cartridges. Back in the day, I used
to refill my HP Deskwriter's cartridges. I used Schaeffer Scrip Jet
Blank Ink. A small bottle cost $8 and would refill the cartridge
about four times. Real HP carts were $22+.

no video on restart on G5 Quad. Help?

2009-12-24 Thread Hal
Hi all.
I'm new to the group, but have been a member of some of the other LEM
groups for a while.
I've been having a problem with my G5 Quad that I hope I can get some
insight on.

It's running 10.5.8, though this problem has been consistent across OS
versions.
When I restart the G5, it reboots fine, but there is no video. If I
use screen sharing to log in from another computer, I can see that it
booted fine, but it won't send video to the DVI port on the video
card.

This behavior is exhibited with several DVI displays (I've tried 3),
including an APple 23 Cinema display. I've also tried 2 video cards,
the original PCIe 6600, as well as a flashed Radeon X1900.

If I tell it to shut down, and then start it up, it works fine.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
-Hal

Also check your PRAM battery, it may be dead or dying.

Be aware, these do come in two flavors: one with SATA support and one

It would have a 128MB PCI video card.

With any Radeon card or some nVidia you can enable QE using PCI
Extreme 3.1:

is not (which I can attest to).

I believe he's flashing the nVidia card with special firmware that
enables QE Core Graphics. I don't believe this is an Xserve Apple
video card.

The card costs more than a whole BW though.

You can likely buy a PC nVidia FX5200 or FX5500 and flash it to Mac
for much cheaper. MacElite has ROMs I believe? These would be the ONLY
PCI cards with Core Image support. QE is OK on a BW or Yikes as long
as the card is the only card and is in the special video PCI slot.
Core Image will be very slow on any PCI video, it really needs AGP or
PCIe.

Re: What is the shelf life of inkjet ink?

2009-12-24 Thread Thunder 1
Jonas,
As one who has worked in a prepress printing facility for many years
and was in charge of large format printers and their
consumables, I can tell you a little about inks and inkjet cartridges.
I have 2 currently working inkjet printers at home (I'm
retired), both HPs. I have been buying bulk ink (both black and color)
forever, due to the fact that printer manufacturers
make their money on consumable products, especially ink, and because
it is not only prohibitively expensive for me to
buy new cartridges, I prefer to do simple things like refilling ink
cartridges myself.

I have found over the years that bulk ink can last a fairly long time,
if kept at room temperature, sealed well, and kept
out of the sunlight. I usually store my ink in a cardboard box, in a
cabinet in my computer room. I have used ink that
has been sitting around for up to 2-3 years without any problem,
either in the cartridge operation or in the final printed
product.

Also, with proper care and maintenance, an inkjet cartridge can last a
long time. I can usually refill a cartridge about
6-10 times before it finally just refuses to cooperate. One of the
main problems I have run into is the cartridge drying
out due to unuse, but this is easily remedied, again with the proper
revival techniques.

I buy my bulk ink from Inksell.com, a company I trust and have been
using for years. They have reasonable prices,
their instructions are easy to understand, they will assist you with
any questions or problems you are having, and
they have specials from time to time on their products. I would
highly recommend them for your ink/cartridges needs.

Hope this helps.
Bill

If you are like me, you have been paying very, very, very, high prices for
black ink, so why not find and buy enough to last a long time if the shelf
 life is ok.

Re: Safari Using up Disc Space

2009-12-24 Thread Erik Hancock
Just Learned about Flash Block and will try it that Adobe flash keeps
killing the Browsers as well -

Was at 300Mb now at 6.58GB after shutting down browsers and restarting.
That¹s quite a big cache - will try to reopen sites and shee what happens.

In activity Monitor about 102% of Cpu goes to the Browser - not sure how
that happens.

Left off the machine info since I thought that was extraneous. Have G4
AGP/1.5GHz/ 2MB ram/OS 10.4/ Safari 4.04
No real add-ons for safari - Sometimes use Firefox with ad blocker.
Any other reccomendatiosn for add-ons?

I usually have 10 or so pages with multiple tabs. I also tend to leave the
app open rather than closing and reloading frequently but it happens about
one a week due to app freezing now think it is due to lack of HD space
which seems odd for this app to be using so much space.

Thanks
Erik

I¹ll do a restart to clear the cache but running this from the pref menu had
 no effect.

In the old days you could tell an app how much space to use. Is there

Adobe Flash eats up cpu ... I know that dual processors have 100% cpu
usage capability ... not sure why a single processor would register
such.

Re: no video on restart on G5 Quad. Help?

 Hi all.
I'm new to the group, but have been a member of some of the other LEM

When logged in remotely check System Preferences / Display and see what
video mode it's trying to display in (width x heighth and vert sync
speed). It's possible it is not one the monitor can display. Try
changing it to something you know the monitor can handle.

Also check your PRAM battery, it may be dead or dying.

Clark is (as usual) correct.
I would add that on many Macs (from the LC series through to G3 and G4
series) I've seen this behaviour shown when the PRAM battery is dead -
most recently on our old G4 QS at work.
Our IT guys (all Windows people) told the user it had a dead MoBo!
I bought in a new 3.6v halfAA and bingo:- a fully functioning QS.
Now they refer all Mac problems to me - or they will do, if any arise.
