I doubt there is that much difference in the chipset used in the USB attached devices. There is just NO reason for blank ink to be expensive. Depends on the printer, if course, but there are a lot of high quality 3rd party cartridges out there, many in the $3 to $8 range. no video on restart on G5 Quad. Help?
Hi all. I'm new to the group, but have been a member of some of the other LEM groups for a while. I've been having a problem with my G5 Quad that I hope I can get some insight on. It's running 10.5.8, though this problem has been consistent across OS versions. When I restart the G5, it reboots fine, but there is no video. If I use screen sharing to log in from another computer, I can see that it booted fine, but it won't send video to the DVI port on the video card. This behavior is exhibited with several DVI displays (I've tried 3), including an APple 23 Cinema display. I've also tried 2 video cards, the original PCIe 6600, as well as a flashed Radeon X1900. If I tell it to shut down, and then start it up, it works fine. Any ideas? Re: What is the shelf life of inkjet ink?
Jonas, As one who has worked in a prepress printing facility for many years and was in charge of large format printers and their consumables, I can tell you a little about inks and inkjet cartridges. I have 2 currently working inkjet printers at home (I'm retired), both HPs. I have been buying bulk ink (both black and color) forever, due to the fact that printer manufacturers make their money on consumable products, especially ink, and because it is not only prohibitively expensive for me to buy new cartridges, I prefer to do simple things like refilling ink cartridges myself. I have found over the years that bulk ink can last a fairly long time, if kept at room temperature, sealed well, and kept out of the sunlight. I usually store my ink in a cardboard box, in a cabinet in my computer room. I have used ink that has been sitting around for up to 2-3 years without any problem, either in the cartridge operation or in the final printed product. Also, with proper care and maintenance, an inkjet cartridge can last a long time. I can usually refill a cartridge about 6-10 times before it finally just refuses to cooperate. One of the main problems I have run into is the cartridge drying out due to unuse, but this is easily remedied, again with the proper revival techniques. I buy my bulk ink from Inksell.com, a company I trust and have been using for years. They have reasonable prices, their instructions are easy to understand, they will assist you with any questions or problems you are having, and they have specials from time to time on their products. I would highly recommend them for your ink/cartridges needs. Hope this helps. If you are like me, you have been paying very, very, very, high prices for black ink, so why not find and buy enough to last a long time if the shelf life is ok. jml -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Safari Using up Disc Space
Just Learned about Flash Block and will try it that Adobe flash keeps killing the Browsers as well - Was at 300Mb now at 6.58GB after shutting down browsers and restarting. That¹s quite a big cache - will try to reopen sites and shee what happens. In activity Monitor about 102% of Cpu goes to the Browser - not sure how that happens. Left off the machine info since I thought that was extraneous. Have G4 AGP/1.5GHz/ 2MB ram/OS 10.4/ Safari 4.04 No real add-ons for safari - Sometimes use Firefox with ad blocker. Any other reccomendatiosn for add-ons? I usually have 10 or so pages with multiple tabs. I also tend to leave the app open rather than closing and reloading frequently but it happens about one a week due to app freezing now think it is due to lack of HD space which seems odd for this app to be using so much space. Is there anything I can do I don¹t do a lot of video but I¹ve seen comments on Flash bloat and wonder if all the stupid active ads and other junk is contributing. Any suggestions I can clean up a few more GB but won¹t that just get gobbled up? Re: no video on restart on G5 Quad. Help?
Clark Martin wrote: Hal wrote: Hi all. When logged in remotely check System Preferences / Display and see what video mode it's trying to display in (width x heighth and vert sync speed). It's possible it is not one the monitor can display. Try changing it to something you know the monitor can handle. Also check your PRAM battery, it may be dead or dying. Clark is (as usual) correct. I would add that on many Macs (from the LC series through to G3 and G4 series) I've seen this behaviour shown when the PRAM battery is dead - most recently on our old G4 QS at work. Our IT guys (all Windows people) told the user it had a dead MoBo! I bought in a new 3.6v halfAA and bingo:- a fully functioning QS. Now they refer all Mac problems to me - or they will do, if any arise.
