Re: How to burn VIDEO_TS
Hi Brian, Perhaps a bit OT but here we go: I have both Tiger and Panther on my MDD on different drives. I use Tiger for the web because my browsers can use the latest Flash version - surfing the web is virtually broken in Panther now. But in Panther I can still use all my old apps in Classic which is not possible in Tiger. Plus my Logitech webcam does not work in Tiger anymore. And so on ... I just wanted to try Toast 8 again for DVD-burning because I had some coasters lately when I burned DVDs in Toast 6. But probably that's not a software issue ... Just the fact that I am not allowed to unzip an archive I made myself is quite annoying - don't you think so? As an old Mac user I hate to be told by my box what I can or cannot do ;-) Regards, Jörg. When I tried to unzip my version 8 again for burning DVDs my Tiger told me that I'm not allowed to do that. Darn! Any workaround that comes to mind here? I'm just flummoxed, not angry ... No such thing as a machine that won't accept the newer, larger, DVDs. I assume you're talking about dual-layer DVDs? ALL DVD units, whether they're Combo, DVD-ROM, or DVD-RW support dual-layer read. I'm assuming by X5 you mean Leopard 10.5, the first OS to ship on dual- layer discs. The only reason your optical unit wouldn't work with a dual-layer DVD is if you only have a CD-ROM unit instead of a DVD unit. This applies only to commercially produced dual-layer DVDs, if you happen to have a home burned copy on a dual-layer DVD-R or DVD+R disc, this could possibly not work, and often firmware updates for the DVD drive can add support for more media types and enable an unreadable disc to work, BUT you probably need a Windows PC in order to update the firmware. I have moved a X.5 .dmg to the computer's hd and now I'm trying to reboot the whole machine from the dmg. Is that even possible? I've been told so. No, you can't boot from the .dmg file. You must clone the .dmg onto a partition and then boot that partition. You can't clone onto the entire HD and then install onto the same HD; you'd need either two separate partitions or two separate drives. You may be able to clone onto a USB flash drive and then boot the USB drive to install, but first you'd need to reformat the USB drive as HFS+ journalled with the appropriate partition map (Apple partition map for PPC Macs, GUID partition map for Intel Macs) using Disk Utility. Hi Kris, I know all my cats ;-) In Tiger all the older apps of Adobe don't work any more like Illustrator and Photoshop or Acrobat. I still like Acrobat 4 for a quick job, it starts up faster in Classic than the CS2 version in Tiger. And I know Illustrator 9 well but find the CS2 version too complex for my daily needs, I need it for compatibility mostly. The same for Photoshop, I even still use version 4 sometimes, it is snappy in Classic and I still know all the old keyboard shortcuts. A pity Mosley stopped updating Camino for Panther. I liked that browser until it broke because of the Flash updates. But I realize that I have to move on even though I am 90 percent retired now. Or just keep getting frustrated sitting at my MDD. Maybe I'll have a go and jump to Snow Leopard by hacking my Samsung netbook - for recent compatibility ... Cheers, Jörg. Re: Over clocking G4
Stevo, Overclocking can be done by changing resistors on the processor board, or by changing some settings in the PRAM, I think. This needs good soldering skills or some tinkering deep inside the system software, and will give you a slight speed improvement at the cost of (maybe) more crashes. To make a real difference, you would need to replace the processor by one from a faster model, or by a “processor upgrade”. This is easier, but it costs, and you’d need to know exactly which model of G4 PowerMac you have. For starters, you can look on the serial number sticker on the back; another good indicator is the position of the audio jacks: aligned vertically or horizontally, and above or below the USB and LAN connectors? Depending on your budget, you could also shop for a faster model: prices have really come down. Startup drive problems
I have Tiger on my internal drive and Leopard on a Verbatim external firewire drive. I have been feeling my way through Leopard for the past month or so and now have gotten into trouble. I have suffered a series of events which may or may not be related but in total they have exhausted my repair capabilities. I ask the group for further suggestions. Yesterday, Time Machine reported failure to back up my system (to a third external drive) because it thought the disk had been removed. It had not, and was clearly visible both on the desktop. I restarted Time Machine and thought I was done. Today, on startup, my EMac took a bit longer to arise, flashed a folder in the center of the screen, and promptly awoke in Tiger. The Leopard disk was at that time visible on the desktop and showed no difficulty when I browsed it. Thinking the Mac just the correct startup info, I went to preferences and directed the next startup to be the disk with Leopard. Unfortunately, after restart it awoke in Tiger again. This time thinking there was a problem with the Leopard drive, I ran disk repair and it reported that it had repaired the disk. I then selected the Leopard hard drive as the startup and restarted. Since then not only does the Mac wake up in Tiger, but the the Verbatim disk is not even visible on the desktop. Restarts, drive utility, plugging and unplugging cables, I can't seem to coax it to the desktop. If this were OS9, I would take SCSI Probe and force the drive to mount but I don't know a similar trick in OSX, Additional suggestions are welcomed. I have difficulty believing that drive utility could render the Verbatim invisible. Your suggestions are welcomed. Hardware test results on my G4 eMac - Memory issue?
Hi all, I have the eMac 1.25 gHz with 1 gb of ram. Owned since new. Replaced motherboard once under warranty a few years ago. Had been running 10.3.9 until May. Installed Tiger 10.4.11 and have been using it smoothly ever since. Last week, I got my first ever kernel panic. Screen said, you must shut down ... etc. I ran everything I knew how to for diagnostics - which was only the Utilities and then Onyx to clear all caches and tidy up stuff. It ran smoothly after this so I thought it was okay again. Today it crashed with same kernel panic. But - when I forced reboot, it would only show the apple icon and spinning thing - then slowly it went to a blue screen. Blue screen flickered, but did nothing to finish booting. The Tiger disk I have isn't for the eMac specifically. So I took my eMac original disks out (with 10.3-something.) and ran the hardware test. It came up with a memory error: Erorr code 2MEM/104/4:DIMM1/J1 I read some obscur post somewhere that said it is possible that when upgrading OS the old RAM will be obsolete. I don't know which OS's it was talking about though. Could this be my problem? I only know enough to be dangerous about diagnostics - so your advice would be very appreciated. If it is the RAM, is it both chips? If I could limp along with only one for a while, that would be workable - no cash for replacement or repair. Hoping you can help me learn what I need to get the eMac running again. My quicksilver with an 800Mhz CPU has been running for about 4 years at 933Mhz. It was NOT stable long term any faster than this. It can encode video (CPU at 100%) for days without any trouble. (good thing because it takes days to rip and encode a DVD on my quicksilver!) Once, it was in a server room that suffered a cooler malfunction. Try removing one stick of RAM if you can and see how it behaves, then replace that stick and remove the other stick and again see how it behaves. If it works with one and not the other you've diagnosed the problem, if it doesn't work with either stick of RAM then either both are bad or not up to spec, or you have a different problem. Re: How to burn VIDEO_TS
On 2010/10/11 16:40, Drew Anderson so eloquently wrote: I use MPEG Stramclip. http://www.squared5.com/ (for the free download) I also purchased the QuickTime plug-in that expands MS's capabilities. I really don't remember anymore what features you can't do without the plug-in. I believe the QT plugin enables MPEG 1 or 2, I don't remember which. But the program will load multiple segment VOB files, as well as quite a few others. It will export quite a number of formats as well, including demuxing just the audio, just the video, video audio separately, etc. into a variety of formats. Adjustments include volume, brightness, contrast, saturation, screen size, interlace/non-interlace, aspect ratio, cropping more. Output movies can also be saved at a variety of quality levels. I have tried to use MPEG Streamclip several times but it won't open a video_ts folder nor will it allow me to select all the files in the video_ts folder. Running it on the vob files that it will let me select results in multiple output files. Can you tell me how you use it? Re: Startup Problems
On Oct 13, 2010, at 3:23 PM, Gottick International wrote: Folks I have this strange problem trying to start a iMac G5. The story runs like this. 1/ I start the machine and get the blinking question mark. 2/ I start the machine using an install DVD and Disk Utility can't even see the machine's HD. 3/ I start the machine again using an install DVD and now Disk Utility can see the machine's HD. Selecting the machine's HD using startup disk I can now start the machine. It works perfectly. 4/ When I shut down the machine and try to start again it I'm back at #1, above. • The computer runs a newly installed OS X.5 and the HD has just been formated. • The HD - when visible - registers as all fine using Disk Utility and Disk Warrior. • All sleep and energy saving contraptions has been disabled. Any suggestions? Check the PRAM battery. It sounds as if it either has died, or is much lower than the nominal 3 volts. If the battery is OK, then start up and do a PRAM reset until it chimes at least 3 times. (Push power button, then immediately hold down Command, Option, P and R until you hear the chimes.) If the battery is bad, replace it and then do the PRAM reset. Not meaning to be rude, but how do I check the battery? Better just replace it, yes? After all the machine has been running for ages. Let's assume you've got a first or second-gen iMac G5. To check the battery, put your iMac G5 face down on a towel on a table. Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the three captive screws in the base of the LCD. Don't try to remove them, just turn them counterclockwise until they stop. Then lift up on the foot of the stand and remove the back cover. The clock battery is hiding underneath the modem or Airport card to the left of center. It's a flat silver CR2032 battery about the size of a nickel. Use a nylon stick or other non-conductive object to push the battery away from the spring. You may have to carefully pry the spring up a tad to get the battery started out of the holder. Then use a multimeter to measure the battery's voltage. If you've got an iMac G5 with iSight (camera lens at top center of bezel), then it's an entirely different ball game to get to the battery. In either case, go here for a step by step guide: http://www.ifixit.com/Browse/iMac_G5 Or, you can get your iMac to boot to the desktop, then manually set the date and time. Make sure you're not connected to the Internet and that you disable the automatic timekeeping feature if it's turned on. Then shut down your iMac and unplug it from the electrical outlet. Leave it that way for a while (15-30 minutes). Then plug it in and get it to boot to the desktop. If your date/time stamp is still correct, the battery is still good. If it's not, then the battery no longer has enough juice to keep the date/time and other startup parameters in memory. The only place I have access to the internet now is on my iBook at the local espresso parlour, so I'm not looking at MPEG Streamclip at the moment. But... I use Mac the Ripper to rip DVD's to my hard drive. MPEG SC works a LOT better that way. At that point, I just double click one of the VOB files in the series. MPEG SC loads, then asks me if I want to load all the files in the series, or just one. I usually select Load all, unless I'm only looking for a specific little clip within a movie. With all the VOB files loaded as a single movie, it will save the entire movie, or whatever portion I choose with Select In Select Out controls as a single file, unless I select Separate file into segments. I realize this is not a very complete answer, so I'm going to install MPEG SC on my laptop when I go home tonight, so I can run it as I'm trying to explain what I'm doing tomorrow. Re: VGA video card for Power Mac G3?
Out of curiosity, what IS the max RAM it can handle? I've heard up to 768MB, but some sites say something like 384MB, which is obviously quite a difference! Thanks, Heather On Sat, Sep 25, 2010 at 1:08 PM, admin oneluc...@mac.com wrote: Heather, great suggestion. That's what I have in my Beige G3. Also, an inexpensive Firewire/USB 2.0 PCI card would make that Beige G3 quite workable. I used a fully-fledged Beige G3 (max RAM, newer ROM, ATA PCI card, etc.) for quite a bit until recently, including OS X. On Sep 25, 2010, at 1:21 PM, Dan Palka wrote: Super easy.
