WD externals. heh. Not very reliable. And older ones are totally
not recommended on Macs.

OTOH, Time Machine is known to shoot itself in the head quite often.
It corrupts its own backup volumes, sometimes to the point they won't

Turn Time Machine OFF, then try connecting the drive.

Check your system.log for error messages.

10.4.11 understands WPA. With an Airport (original) you are limited to
WPA/TKIP. 10.4.11 with later Airport cards isn't limited.

There is an Apple article on it.

Here's a novel thought that might help. I believe in Leopard you can
boot a PPC Mac as GUID partition format instead of the normal Apple
partition format. You could format the HD as GUID with TWO partitions
instead of three, and then use the hidden EFI partition as the tiny
partition, I think the EFI partition is about 200 MB, so there should
be plenty of room on it.

10·4·11 only understands WEP and LEAP wireless security schemes. 10·5·x
understands these and WPA wireless security. 10·6·x and later (such as your
iDevices) understand all of these and WPA2.

If this is the reason, scaling back the security on your network to either none
or WEP will allow the 10·4·11 macs to join the network. (No security for more
time than it takes to make this experiment is not recommended! I believe it's
worthwhile setting the router not to broadcast the SSID [name of the wireless
network] so that you have to know it and type it into the device you wish to
connect.)

Can you push the cube and Quicksilver up to 10·5·x and so use the strong WPA
security scheme?

Hope this helps

Recommend USB UD for backups

Hello all,

I have tried everything to get it to show up on the Desktop under

Can someone recommend a reliable USB Hard Drive that I should use?

My configuration is as follows:

Quicksilver G4
Two internal hard drives:

1) Mac OS X 10.5.8
2) Mac OS S 10.4.11 + mac OS 9.2.2 (for classic and OS 9 apps)

I appreciate any help.

Thanks!

G4 PowerBook can't boot from Tiger Install DVD

2012-01-29 Thread David W. Morris
After upgrading one of my G4 PowerBook's to a WD 320gb PATA hard
drive, it will no longer boot using my Tiger Install DVD. I first
thought the hard drive was bad (brand new drive), then I thought I had
made a mistake in taking apart and putting back together my
PowerBook. Eventually I took out the drive and re-installed my old
hard drive and the PowerBook ran fine again.

I am embarrassed to say that thinking I had killed my nice G4
PowerBook during the upgrade attempt, I purchased a replacement
(because I was demonstrating MorphOS3.0 beta at a computer show and
had to have a working G4 PowerBook that week) before I figured out
that my first G4 PowerBook was okay when I put the original hard drive
back into it. So now I have two 1.67GHz G4 PowerBook's and I put the
320gb hard drive into the second G4 PowerBook and find out that it
also won't boot from the Tiger Install DVD. I bought a retail Leopard
Install DVD and it will boot from that, but for some reason it still
won't boot from the Tiger Install DVD.

So you ask, why bother with the Tiger Install DVD if I have the
Leopard Install DVD. Well, the Leopard Install DVD's Disk Utility
will not allow you to create partitions less than 1gb and to set up a
dual boot MacOSX & MorphOS3.0 beta system you need at least 3
partitions and one of those partitions only needs to be about 60mb and
I hate wasting 1gb of space for a partition that only needs less than
60mb of file space.

Sorry for such a long explanation, but do any of you have any idea why
a G4 PowerBook will not boot from the Tiger Install DVD when it has a
320gb hard drive is installed inside of it?
