User files on second drive

2012-05-20 Thread geraldcornish
Newly acquired Quicksilver (2002) G4 Tiger 4.11, 40GB system drive
and 180GB drive added for data files.

I would like to have the User files (some 82GB) on the second drive
(Data Disk) while starting from the system drive (Mac HD).

I'm sure I've seen an article about this before but cannot find it
anywhere.
I seem to recall it is not as simple as placing an alias in the
'Users' folder so I would like to get the real info before setting up
the G4 for use by my wife.

Can anyone direct me to the information about this?

TIA

Dual boot possible?

2012-05-20 Thread Don Wakefield
I have an older Mac:  a PPC 7600 with a Sonnet G4 400 meg upgrade card using OS
9.1. The question I have is: What procedures and/or additional software would
be necessary to enable a dual boot system which would allow Umbutu of some
flavor to be used periodically with my 9.1 when necessary? Ideas and pointers
would be very much appreciated.

Hello Don,

I found the following possibilties:

http://www.hornware.com/, directory sharing. I haven't tried it myself. It
might not be what you were looking for. Using Yaboot to create a dual boot
would be something
to consider, although I see some negative stories on other discussion forums
about Yaboot.

I just entered two separate words yaboot and os 9.1 in Google. On
http://www.creativepro.com/article/dual-booting-os-x-the-safe-way-to-explore-the-future
 there is a blog
with some good tips and guidelines when creating a dual boot setup on a Mac.

I guess I haven't found the silver bullet yet, but maybe it could be help you.

It used to be on the same site as Carbon Copy Cloner, but you have to use the
wayback machine:

The instructions are for Jaguar, but are valid up to system 4.

Re: User files on second drive

2012-05-20 Thread Chance Reecher
I do not know if it's the same method in Tiger, but in Leopard and on you
simply create the user, move their home folder to another drive, and then
control-click their username in the Users preference pane to bring up
advanced where you change the home folder location to wherever you moved
it.

Re: Dual boot possible?

2012-05-20 Thread Nathan Templeton
Hey Don,

I have to say it has been awhile since I have installed linux on that
vintage of a PPC, and I can tell you it is ALOT of work.
First things first: You need to get a copy of BootX:
http://penguinppc.org/bootloaders/bootx/
This is the boot loader used for OldWorld macs that do not have open
firmware, is this installed within os 9 to allow you to boot into your linux
partition. From here, finding an iso for your machine that will boot will be
even more problematic. You did not say if you were looking for a full graphic
install, or a command line only application which will make a huge difference.
Here is a great reference site to get you started that I have used over
the years. Also doing a google search for PPC mac 7600 linux will point you
to quite a few older Ubuntu, Debian and Mandrake forums for some better insight.

Hope that helps ya a bit.

Re: Dual boot possible?

2012-05-20 Thread peterhaas

First things first: You need to get a copy of BootX:
 http://penguinppc.org/bootloaders/bootx/
This is the boot loader used for OldWorld macs that do not have open

PCI Macs have Open Firmware * .

Old World goes up to and including certain G3 PowerMacs and PowerBooks
(generally, the Beige G3 and its relations).

New World is for PowerMacs and PowerBooks beyond those.

Dual booting of Linux and MacOS X has been successful with a number of
Linux distributions. Generally, the distribution includes a boot loader
which allows you to specify which of Linux, MacOS 9 or MacOS X you want to
boot.

Yellow Dog Linux had several distributions which were specific to a PPC
Mac Mini and these were quite good.

The same was true for distributions for the Pismo PowerBook.

* Even the ill-fated Apple Network Server featured O.F., although it was a
primitive version of O.F.

Not withstanding the primitiveness, Yellow Dog Linux had a least two
distributions which could support the ANS, and there are still a number of
web sites which run ANSes using YDL.

The ANS was never intended to run MacOS, not withstanding the fact that
most of its essentials were identical or nearly identical to a 9500/9600.

OS 9.2.2 NetBook on a G4 DA

2012-05-20 Thread glen
I have set up a G4 DA 733 MHz, 1.5GB RAM Mac with OS 9.2.2  to run old legacy
PageMaker Files. Some of my clients still need revisions to files that were
created 10-15 or more years ago. Rather than convert them to InDesign files I
decided this is a better way to go,

For some reason a retail 9.1 install disk would not install on the DA so I used
the Apple NetBoot version to to install 9.2.2. I removed two extensions that
had some reference to NetBoot and the system booted into a more modern desktop,
a sort of a blue/gray version of OS X, really nice eye candy. However, upon
boot I get the message:

Macintosh Manager cannot find any servers
You need to locate the Macintosh Manager server to use.
I hit the OK button

After more dialogue boxes and buttons I get:Enter the NetBoot password
After I enter the default password all is fine, I'm in 9.2.2

Is  there anyway to avoid this dance with NetBoot queries  when I boot into
9.2.2? Perhaps there is another extension that should be disabled? Or how can I
locate the Macintosh Manager?

Suggestions appreciated, thanks  --glen

 * Even the ill-fated Apple Network Server featured O.F., although it was a
 primitive version of O.F.

ANS Open Firmware was actually more advanced than any other beige Mac OF
except the G3. Most beige pre-G3 PCI Power Macs used version 1.0.5; the ANS
was at 1.1.22, which had a number of bug fixes.
