Don't you wish installers told you accurately what they were about to do? ;^)

If these are G5 install disks, it must be Classic as no G5 will boot OS9. Your
logic is sound, but it's still scary, right? 99.9% chance you will do no harm
and you will have Classic at the other end of the operation. Your call. Be
brave and trust Apple? Probably will be fine.

I have something on a disc labeled "ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE"

when I fire up the installer, it wants to install OS9
but it doesn't say whether it's the non-bootable CLASSIC-enabling os9,
or if it might want to just install OS9 over the existing10.4.11
My DEDUCTION is that since it;s part of the G5 OSX install discs,
therefore it MUST be the CLASSIC version of os9 yes?

should I tell it to go ahead and do it?

If you got it with the OSX package, you got a separate 9.1 or 9.2.1 (which you
get depends on which version of OSX...earlier ones had 9.1, 10.2 or 10.3
through 10.4 or so had 9.2.1). The 9 disk was usually white with a large
numeral 9 on its face.

OS 9.1, or 9.2.1 would have come as a separate cd in the set of disks you got
with the machine. It has to be installed separately from the OSX stuff...for
best results, I's suggest installing the OS 9 stuff first...then OSX if you
want it.

As far as I know, other versions of the OS are still controlled by Apple, even
if they no longer sell them. 9.2.1 cds used to be relatively easy to find and
cheap as they came with early versions of OSX, but folks often did not install
or use them, and so sold them off.

6.03, 6.05, 6.08, 7.5.3 are all posted for free download on the 'older
software' page of Apple's server. Updates for more recent systems are there, to
9.1 , but you need the base system to update...to get 9.1 to work, you need to
start with 9.0 or 9.0 4 installed and then use the downloaded 9.1 updater
there. There were non-Apple sources selling 9.1 disks for a while. I checked
the one I have bookmarked...the webpage still comes up...who knows if they
still sell the disks. They want $159.95 for a 9.1 cd.

My G5 is sick and my G4 can't read CDs so can't verify. I've never used
Classic on the G5 (out with the old) but whenever I tried to launch a Classic
app, it dutifully asked if was OK to launch Classic (I had set it to in System
Prefs). Bruce Johnson has the answers you need, and several others here, I'm
sure, but I'm pretty confident the G5 was designed to support Classic out of
the box. Good luck!

If Dave sounds like he's trying to sell you on the OS it's because he's a

Just folks who think we were cheated out of a good OS years ago. So as an owner

That is good to know. I am just trying to be a good list member and not step
on anyone's toes here, so that is why I am being careful with any
discussions about alternative OSes for these G4 Mac models.

I'll try to keep this as brief as possible, with respect to others on the
list that have no interest in using an alternative OS on their G4 Mac
computers, after all MacOSX is the best OS available on any hardware. ;-)

The alternative OS that I am a strong supporter of is called MorphOS and is
currently at version 2.7. It is based on a micro-kernel called Quark and is
tightly coded to make it extremely fast and efficient. It has been dubbed
"The Lightning OS" by many reviewers, and if it is setup as the primary OS
on a G4 Mac computer, it can reboot in less than 10 seconds to a fully
functional desktop environment. MorphOS3.0 is late and should be released
any day now. It has been developed by a small group of mostly European
members who are all former Amiga users who wanted to create a modern Amiga
replacement operating system that would run on PowerPC CPU's. The last and
highest performing Amiga hardware was created by a third party company named
Phase5. They made a few different models of accelerators for Commodore Amiga
computers that had both a Motorola 68040, or 68060 (remember when Mac's only
had Motorola 680x0 CPU's?) and a 603, or 604e PowerPC
CPU. The accelerator came with a modified OS that could run certain
software on the PowerPC CPU, but would then task switch back to the Motorola
680x0 CPU to run the rest of the Amiga software. It was a clunky solution
and came too late, as Commodore was already on the ropes and about to go
bankrupt, but still development continued long after Commodore died and
these people from Phase5, along with many other Amiga users/developers that
would not let the platform die, began the MorphOS project. It was first
hoped that the new owner of the Amiga IP would buy their work and it would
have become the new AmigaOS, which would have been version 4 (as the
official AmigaOS ended at version 3.9). It was not to be and another company
won the negotiations to write AmigaOS4.x and we now have competing products
in the Amiga community.

Enough on the history lesson. All you need to know about it is that MorphOS
has been under development for over 10 years now and has become a very
polished and efficient operating system, but it still lacks in sheer numbers
of developers and native software, even though it can run most of the
thousands of software titles that were originally written for the Amiga line
of computers through a JIT (Just-In-Time) 680x0 to PPC translator that is
built into the MorphOS operating system. The only Amiga software that does
not run without an emulator on MorphOS, is mostly games and a few other
applications that do not follow the system guidelines and hit the old Amiga
custom chipset directly, as these custom chips do not exist in the computers
(like G4 Mac's) that are supported today by MorphOS.

MorphOS is not intended as a replacement for MacOSX (except perhaps for only
the most hardcore old time Amiga users). It is what is commonly referred to
as a "Hobby OS" that a few thousand users and developers enjoy using and
mostly only has interest for people that were former users of the Amiga line

I don't have the latest version of the PPC Flash, but although FB excludes me
(curse them for that), SoundCloud and anything else I've tried works fine. In
addition, if I click on the link to a YouTube video on FB, all is well. i.e.,
for me, only FB doesn't let me play videos directly. I'll definitely save

Safari quit working on both of my Tiger PMs (G4 and G5) one by one. Firefox
has been bulletproof in operation. I have the security settings as high as
they go but there's no setting for "opening safe files after downloading". FF
promises to "warn me when sites try to install add-ons". But I worry most
about Java and Flash, mainly Flash.

Another concern is that after my router bit the dust, I've been connected
directly to the Comcast modem. This works for now as the G5 is down with a bad
PS. This makes me nervous as hell. But it functions so much better now with
2.7MB/sec (21.6Mb/sec) peak d/l speeds, more than double what I was getting.
Am I being stupid?

If yes, is Airport Extreme the best way to go? I currently have no need for
WiFi.

All comments welcome!

Flash is a virus, but necessary to take full use of the internet, at least for

FWIW: On my Tiger G4 dual 1GHz MDD, TenFourFox (7450) is graphically glitchy.
For instance, YouTube has unresolved overlaps of the player on the background.
It seems a little faster than Firefox 3.6, but not currently an option for me.
It's nice that when you download and run TFF it uses all your Firefox resources
but will let you go back to Firefox without any problems detected by me. I'd
be interested in any others' experiences with TFF. I support the effort.

Legitimizing a port of OSX to PCs would open a can of worms and knock the
polish of the Mac image. Apple would rather leave the back door open to those
brave souls willing to tame the Hackintosh beast. If you have enough $$ to put
together a decent PC, you can have a Hackintosh, as many do. Otherwise, a
"real" Mac assures you of success out of the box. Making a software-only Mac
would diminish the Brand. Apple products have the reputation they do because
they work, and I don't blame Apple for wanting to keep control, which they
would lose if they lost control of the hardware. Just my 2 cents.

Inaccurately is an understatement. To many unknown variables -
server speed, the throughput of the network between you and it,
browser overhead, browser averaging, etc.

Use a real speed test, please. Of course, please make it clean test
- no other apps running and no other network traffic on your LAN.

And your internet service is supposed to be 8 Mbps?
(7.9 MB/sec would be ~80 Mbps -- expensive).

30 Kbps (less than V.90 dial-up speed!) over an 8 Mbps service is
pitiful. Because that affects all your Macs, it's starting to sound
like you have a cabling or switch or router or modem issue. The
information from the ifconfig (Bruce's reply) will be helpful.

Anything talking to that router via wi-fi? (You didn't say exactly
what model router it is, so I'm guessing it does wi-fi). Asking
because I've seen many less-expensive routers taken to their knees
because of being overloaded.

Re: Powermac G4 mdd dual Strange noise???

2011-02-08 Thread schaffpa
Not to worry. The "bee" has been a normal event here for years. I have no idea
what it is but it's apparently harmless. My best guess is a drive doing some
sort of alignment check. I have a Seagate 320, a Seagate 80 and an IBM 80. I
sounds benign, lasts about 1 or 1 1/2 seconds, occurs totally randomly a couple
of times a day, and doesn't affect anything that I've noticed. My dual 1GB MDD
runs 24/7 w/o sleep, BTW.

FYI, if you hear the fan speed up much at all, try cleaning the intake plenum
chamber in the lower front (aggressively with a tooth brush or similar and a
vacuum upholstery brush). Get all the dust bunnies you can see. My temp went
from 138 deg F down to 126 and the fan complains MUCH less now.

Hy!

I am installing a new system for my powermac (and I am like bit on the edge
with my nerves, because everything goes wrong), and I heard no such noise when
I loaded the optical drive with my installation DVD. It seems that this sound
poops up randomly.

Well, I this computer is normally up for days, but iStat reads 46-49C
temperature, so there should be no problem. I really hope that it is not
something wrong with the PSU. Should I reset PMU? If so, with what command in
the open firmware?

p.s. I is it OK for the CRT monitor to be in standby mode for days? I really
worry, because sometimes I leave the computer on when I leave home (it does
some intense processing). My monitor is SAMSUNG SyncMaster 957p, some 8 years
old. The image is of very high quality, never damaged (as far as I know), on
the power surge.

Thanks for answers,

My stock MDD dual 1.0GHz ATI 9000 Pro (64MB) handles 1920x1080 just fine on an

This is via DMI. Interestingly, it will not work properly on my 47" Vizio via

Re: Sudden power loss in G5

2011-01-03 Thread schaffpa
Leo,

Power supplies are a bitch requiring removing almost everything. My 2.3 dual
core went abruptly with a flash and a stench. However, you may be having
problems with coolant leaking onto your electronics, which is worse. Check this
out IMMEDIATELY!

Fine machine otherwise!

I have a dual 2.7 Ghz PPC G5 w/ 4.5 GB ram. The machine recently
started powering off without warning. Is this signs of a power supply
failing? If so how hard are the power supplies to replace in these
towers?

Thanks for the help.

Re: New internal hard drive for Power Mac G4

2010-12-28 Thread schaffpa
Right on Al! As an ex-mechanic I learned that in order to find the source of a
noise, you really need a stethoscope (water pump vs A/C compressor vs air pump,
etc). I had a commercial one from Snap-On but even a hose with a metal probe
(or a paper towel tube) will be of benefit. Something that transmits local
noise is a BIG help! ;^)

I would try a stethoscope, or a low tech 11 inch cardboard core from
your last roll of paper towels, or make yourself an "ear trumpet" from
paper.

G5 power supply problems

2010-10-25 Thread schaffpa
I have a late G5 2.3 dual-core Power Mac that has run 24/7 since I bought it
new in December 2005. The only enhancement it received was a 2nd 250 GB HDD and
4 GB of RAM. A month or 2 ago it died instantly (there was a gunshot like
"pop", the screen went black and the power light was out 2 seconds later when I
looked, and the ensuing stench made me not try a restart). My meager training
screamed "power supply", but that's just my uneducated guess. Googling revealed
a fault in my power supply that was covered by Apple until January 2010, and a
call to Apple Care resulted in an "I'm sorry" determination of coverage.
Apparently the purchase of $7500 of Apple products (w/o Apple Care purchases)
in the last 8 years doesn't qualify me for any "special" consideration. OK. My
"local" (4 hr return trip) Apple Store was unwilling to let me discuss anything
with a "genius" and just wanted me to bring it in. The closest Apple certified
repair center (about the same distance) quoted a flat labor fee of $95 and a
"new" Apple part cost of $400(!?). A relative Apple tech who works for a WA
State university said an exchange from Apple would be $150, so I presume this
would be a refurbished unit.

My questions to anyone out there are:
1. Has anyone else with the latest 1000 watt power supply had a failure on the
G5 PM?
2. If this power supply has failed (seems likely to me), what are the odds that
logic board, drives, memory, etc are OK? I used an external FW drive and it
works fine w/my G4 PM (saved my bacon!!).
3. Anyone have an opinion, for my purposes, whether I'd be better served by an
Apple store or a cooperative 3rd party?

I want my beloved child back! Any help/advice from those who know better than I
would be MOST appreciated! 8^)

TIA

- Peter

Interesting, but I still think that Apple dropped the ball with
regard to option to power sucking G5 chips for laptops. Neither IBM
or Motorola could do it but maybe a special arrangement with other
Intel competitors to work on a low power PPC such as AMD could have
proven fruitful. Power technology is now way up there with regards to
clock speed supporting multiple cores.

Just my 2¢ worth...

JT

(Curses on Comcast for not setting the "quote" function.) 8^P

AMD does not do PPC. Apple's decision to do Intel, particularly for laptops,
was sound. It let them compete with "PCs".

It was because Motorola could not deliver a low-energy, powerful footprint.
Intel is undeniably better at that!

As a G4/G5 participant, I lament the loss of g4/g5 technology, but I understand
the move to Intel.

Moving to an Apple-produced processor also is intriguing. Let the good times
roll...
