Re: USB-Parallel cable: Driver for a G5?
You may need to install a driver for the USB-to-Parallel bridge chipset. Look in System Profiler under USB to see the chipset. Many use a Prolific chipset which I think needs a driver in OS X. Thanks for this useful hint. What I got in System Profiler is this: Product ID: 0x1001 Vendor ID: 0x047e Looking up an USB database (http://www.linux-usb.org/usb-ids.html), this is what I found: 047e Agere Systems, Inc. (Lucent) 1001 USS720 Parallel Port So, it seems my USB-Parallel cable is somehow recognized by the Mac. Now I don't know what to look for... I googled usb parallel Agere Systems macintosh, but I couldn't find anything related (mostly is Linux stuff). Any idea? You might want to check that the parallel port on the printer is enabled. If it was last used in another environment then it might not be open. Re: Analog video input?
If you don't have a camcorder with firewire output, how do most Mac users input their analog composite video into their Mac's for editing? I have a couple older Hi-8mm camcorders and a ton of family tapes that I want to edit I have tried the All in Wonder to digitize video and didn't really like it. It is getting long in tooth and I had dropped frames. the canopus ADVC300 is highly rated. I didn't buy one when my surplus dealer had a bunch for about $100 and am regretting it. It is one of the most recommended methods to dump video. Recently I bought a Sony 350 Digital 8 camcorder with a firewire out that I am hoping will work for my old Hi8 tapes. I have a lot to edit also. -- Paxton Hoag Astoria, OR USA -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Analog video input?
I don't know if the Digital 8 camcorder will play Hi8 tapes or not, but I do know that most Sony Digital 8 can be made to pass-thru analog video and output digital video as if they are an analog-to-digital converter device. You plug-in the analog device to the RCA jacks on the digital camcorder and use a Firewire cable for the output. The Digital 8s will play Hi-8 tapes, at least the high end ones will. I didn't know you could modify some with firmware. I have a JVC DV camcorder with pass through and it does work as mentioned above. I did a test with my G4 Quicksilver and it worked but it was a lot of cabling and my only Hi-8 source camcorder had mono audio, one of the reasons I went looking for a 300 series Sony Camcorder. -- Paxton Hoag Astoria, OR USA -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Define cheap and where to get one. I look on the usual place, fleabay, and I see 9800 pros going for around 100 US... Mac versions are double that. Not quite what I would consider cheap. :-) I have been buying 9800 Pros (PC versions) from $15 to $20 at the Free Geeks thrift store in Portland Oregon. I also found one at the Next Step thrift Store in Eugene Oregon. Goodwill just established a computer store in Eugene also but I didn't see any thereor I would have probably bought it. Re: 5v power adapters
I want to buy a 5v power adapter that I can use on most of my stuff ilke external FW USB drives and Pc cards cards and such. I want to get some that work across the board, Is there something like this I can get? I am surprised no one has mentioned getting a small bench power supply and a handfull of the power adapter plugs. I have two bench supplies that I consider invaluable in powering up new-to-me equipment. One of them as a dedicated 5V output among the adjustable outputs. The regulation is so much better than any wall wart. Another cheap alternative is to get a 5V regulated power block like a Lamda that comes out of surplus rack mounted computer gear, also well regulated. For these you would have to wire up the handfull of power tips yourself. The Epson prints 13 inches by 44 inches and I don't know a laser that does that (in color). Also the Epson uses pigmented inks which are much more finely milled than laser toner. So for quality photos that last a long time the Epsons are better. I suspect, for archival colors, that the Xerox thermal wax printers might come close. However I don't think any of those come in 13 inch wide. Most people who use the Epsons are printing photos and using the 13 inch wide feature of the printers. Re: Recommend a Scanner
Can anyone recommend a currently available artist quality scanner that will work with my G4 MDD running OS X 10.3 (and probably will upgrade to 10.4)? I did check the archives, but the related topics are a little dated. The most important thing in a scanner is the Dmax which gives the range the scanner covers from light to dark. For Artist Quality the higher Dmax the better. At our local community college I have used the Epson 1XL that is a 12 X 17 Graphic Arts scanner hooked into a Mac graphic arts lab. I really liked it but at $2500 it is very expensive. It's Dmax is 3.8 and it now is an older product. The one I would recommend is a V700, a current model. It has a Dmax of 4.0, is new $547 from Epson and is a 6400 X 9600 DPI scanner. My photography teacher, at the community college, bought one for himself. It covers 8.5 X11 inches. I thnk you could find it cheaper. I lucked out this last trip and got an Epson 4490 Photo from Goodwill for $10. It is a current but older model with a Dmax of 3.4 and is 4800 X 9600 DPI model, also 8.5 X 11 inches. These are all 48 bit color depth. and all have Digital ICE. There is the V500 but it is the upgrade of the 4490 and only has a Dmax of 3.4, nowhere near as good as the V700. I would recommend the Epson Perfection V700. Re: Can my Mac Access my Cable DVR Box 'safely'?
Can I use my Mac (g4 mini) to access the recordings in our Cable DVR Box in a 'safe' to the box manner and in a 'successful' manner? It is a 'Motorola DCH 3416 HD Dual Tuner DVR' with all the usual video and audio connectors one might expect, but I noticed there are 2 USB ports and a Firewire port right there on the connection panel on the back of the box. I 'assume' accessing the Hard Drive inside the Box via one of these jacks would be fairly likely, but I wonder what pitfalls and perils I ought to be aware of before attempting anything. I also wonder if the files it uses might be proprietary and/or unaccessable or usable on my Mac. Check out the Yahoo group dishrip. It has 27,000 members. Re: Which printer do you like?
I have been using Goodwill printers at about $10 each, specializing in HP Photosmart 7350s and 7550s. I use these because I standardized on the 56, 57 and 58 ink carts. They seem to work well however the door to change the ink carts is a little flaky so I check those out before I buy one. I have refilled these 5X carts with a Costco refill kit but abandoned it. The color was acceptable but noticeably worse than using HP carts. I have had good luck printing with them both photos and text, on Mac (10.3.9) , PC (XP 98) and Linux (Ubuntu). I also travel for several months at a time and have always had good luck in coming back and using the printer after it has not been used for two or three months. I also have a Lexmark E234n Network laser printer that I also got at Goodwill for $10. Had to change the feed roller (actually just turned them over.) Works really well as a BW network printer. Very quick. Works well with the Macs. It replaced a networked Laserjet 5 that also worked with the Macs (OS9.2). My next printer I am looking for is a Epson 2400 printer with pigment inks for studio quality Photo reproduction. Hoping to find one in Goodwill. Estate sale find, imac wi password and bad CD...How to get past
Last weekend I got a nice iMac 600 MHz G3 slot loader with what appears to be a bad CD drive. It won't grab the CD and pull it in and if pushed in won't work (probably not getting it in all the way). And it is running a password protected OS X, not sure what version. The owner is gone, it was an estate sale. My question is how to bypass the password. I tried my OS X 3.5 disk and had to dismantle the Imac to get the disk back out. Did not boot from C. Not sure how to boot in target mode. Is this what I would do to hook it up to a machine.with a firewire cable (which I don't have). Can I do it over Ethernet through my hub? Any other way of deleting the password? Removing the battery? Jumper inside the computer. Can I use an external USB CD drive. USB thumb drive?
