Re: DA G4 will not shut down

2014-01-30 Thread gifutiger
Greetings,

My guess is that you don't want to fix your problem.
I say this because there is only one way to fix your problem and I list
them below.

1. Remove all of the cards in your machine except the video card, restart
holding down the "Cmd, Opt, P & R" keys until you hear the start-up chime
at least twice.
   * If you don't hear the start-up chime then you have a processor problem
- replace the processor with a known good processor.
2. If after step #1 you can shutdown, startup, open applications etc. then
you are on your way to locating what is causing your problem and this step
is for you to replace ½ of the cards that you removed in step #1.
3. Start up the machine again and if; you are back to where you were then
remove ½ of the cards that you installed in step #2 and restart.
*This step is predicated on the number of cards that you installed in
step #2, if you only installed 2 cards then remove 1 card and repeat step
#2.
4. If the machine boots and performs Okay then chances that the other card
is your problem, however this may not be absolutely true, so to make sure
remove the card that worked in step #3 and replace it with the card that
was removed and restart.
* If the second card works Okay then you might have a problem with one
card interfering with the proper operation the other card or perhaps the
card location.
5. If both card work Okay by themselves then you might want to try then in
different slots, both at the same time,
6. Back to step #2 if the cards that were replaced in this step worked then
you should replace ½ of the remaining cards that were removed initially and
restart.
   * Repeating the process until the defective card or cards are discovered.

Good Luck

Re: Eudora replacement

2014-01-21 Thread gifutiger
I used Eudora mail a long time ago, it was just the best. Then I changed to
Apple Mail since it was integrated into the Mac OSX operating system. I was
Okay with it until OSX 9.x.x it was a mess, then OSX 10.1.x and not it is
the worst client eMail around.

Like the other responders I would use Eudora again and be so pleased.

Re: Mail corruption issue

2013-08-20 Thread gifutiger
Greetings,

If you haven't tried this yet it might just work. When I've had mail
problems it has worked for me.

In your home folder go to Library/Mail and you will find a file
called Envelope Index.
With the Mail Application closed change the name of this file to
bak.Envelope Index (which will save the file incase it is needed later)
Now open the Mail Application, when it is opened it will give you a message
that this is the first time that you have open the Mail Application.
Accunolage and continue, now the Mail Application will look for all of your
emails and rebuild the data base index If you have a lot of eMail's it may
take a long time.

If the Envelope Index is corrupt, when done you will have all of your eMail
just like the last time that they were before corruption.

Cheers.

Greetings,

Perhaps you might want to get a CPU stress test which will show if one or
both of your CPU's are having a problem.
You can find one of the best CPU stress test programs at;
http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft/
Be sure to pick the correct one for your platform.

Re: Web sites suddenly blocked

2013-04-30 Thread gifutiger
Greetings,

DNS stands for "Directory Name Server" and has nothing to do with your
router. "OPEN" is just the name of a server, and there are lots of DNS
units throughout the world.

The primary ip address for OPEN is 208.67.222.222 and the secondary ip
address is 208.67.220.220

The purpose of a DNS is to translate words/names i.e. www.myhome.com into a
ip address because the internet really locates URL's through an ip address.

Using a Mac open "System Preferences" then open "Network" and when that
opens you will see information relating to the internet that your system is
using. There should be, if you are using a local router a statement of IP
Address: 192.168.1.x and a Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Next there should be, Router: 192.168.1.1 and the next item is DNS Server:
8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 (which is Googles DNS address that I'm using.)

The specified DNS can be changed (which is another subject) however the DNS
is by default set by your internet provider.

The default DNS can be reset by reseting your internet box.

Cheers

Harry

Re: My Quicksilver Dual 1GHz G4 has gone bizerk ...

2012-12-26 Thread gifutiger
Greetings,

This may or may not be related, I have a MDD 1.25Gh dual processor that was
having a similar problem and I traced it (logs) to the fact that one processor
was trying to hand-off a process to the other processor and it didn't respond.

The log said something like "waiting for the other processor" I think it ref. a
timer and that's where the log ended, as the timer reset the system.

I found an application that tested the processors and ran it several times.
After running it several times the reset problem got better, didn't go away
just got better.

So I got myself a Mac Mini which fixed the situation.

Cheers

MDD G4 odd start/restart behavior - new video card

2012-12-11 Thread gifutiger
Greetings,

If you need drivers you should be able to get them on ATI web page.
When I was using my G4 AGP Graphic 400 I need to install the drivers (I think
there was2) before everything worked Okay.
Well my problem was, if the system went to sleep upon wake up the screen was
scrambled, and the only way out was, Shutdown and restart.
But with the drivers installed sleep & wake up was good.

If you can't find the drivers let me know, I'm sure that I still have them.

Sounds like a good idea, however kts-af.net is an underlying service that
receives a fee for redirecting traffic.
In case your not aware of it when you go to a WEB Page and click on a link
that takes you to another WEB Page, the receiving "Owner" of that page has
to "PAY" the referring page owner for the potential customer.
I've been retired for more than 10 years now and the ISP that we owned
(PGEXPRESS.COM) went bankrupt in the U.S. and was moved back to London, so
I don't remember how much is paid to the referring page owner, it is not
very much Oh say something like $0.1 (just a guess perhaps another
member knows the exact amount) but if you consider 100,000,000 link
connections a day can add up to a sizable amount.
In addition let's take Google as an example, when you click on the
"Shopping" icon and follow one of the links, Google is paid a link referral
fee and if you purchase something using that link then Google gets and
additional fee.

Therefore if you are being referred directly to a radio station link from
iTunes kts-af.net is being cut out of the fee chain. So expecting that the
radio station will be support going back to the old way doesn't have much
of a chance.

Re: G5 Constant HD activity

John,

If it is your "Spotlight" then click on the "Spy Glass" in the upper right
corner and you should see a message that "Spotlight" is indexing your
system. If you have more than one drive then the message will say which
drive is being indexed.

Safari Bookmark Bar

2012-03-13 Thread gifutiger
Greetings

This may be the wrong place to post this question, if so would someone
please point me to the correct Group.

My Safari Bookmark Bar used to have one of those triangles next to the
item on the par if it was a folder and had Bookmarks inside.

Well something happened and the triangles have change to squares and
if I click on them, all of the bookmarks inside open is separate
folders.

If I go to "Bookmarks" on the top and pull the drop-down menu the
Bookmark shows up with all of the triangles.

I've downloaded and reinstalled Safari 5.0.6 from the Apple archive
server and everything has stayed the same

Platform is a 1.25Gh Dual MDD running OS X 10.5.8
2.0Gb Memory.

Re: Problems with MDD Freezing Up

2011-11-19 Thread gifutiger
Greetings,

There should be some kind of indication as to why your platform is
freezing in the "Console Log"
You'll find the Console log in your "Utilities" folder.
When you restart after a "freeze" open the console log and perhaps
you'll find out what was happening just prior to the freeze.

Re: Optical Audio Port continuously lit up on PowerMac G5 = NO internal speaker output = NO chime

2011-11-04 Thread gifutiger
Greetings,

The problem is actually caused by a little switch inside the jack that
gets stuck. When you stick in an audio cable, it pushes the switch
down. If it's an analog cable, the end is made of metal. If it's
optical, the end is made of plastic. If the switch is pressed down,
the computer checks to see if the plug inside is metal or plastic
based on conductivity. When it gets stuck and nothing is in there, it
thinks an optical cable is plugged in since the switch is down but
nothing conductive is in there. That's why it works with headphones or
external analog speakers.

Comments from an Apple User Group;
Had the same problem as thousands of you, re: dodgey cheap mutiple
output 3.5mm plug. When will they learn one hole for one thing. They
try to be too smart for their own good. Anyway, internal speakers
weren't working so I tried inserting headphones in and out, but no
luck. Then tried inserting a toothpick, but again no luck. Finally
succeeded, against my best judgement, to insert a metal object into an
optical output. By fiddling about I was able to "realease" the contact
that allows the computer to make an assessment on whether a headphone/
toslink or "nothing" is inserted. The contact is in the 7 o'clock
position. By isloating this contact I gave it a gentle push downwards
and it seems to have fixed the problem, but be gentle as there are
plenty of things to ruin inside that little connector. Good Luck

So your problem is in the "Toslink" connector.

You could also try Trashing the file ~/Library/Preferences/
com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist

Re: Password protect?

2011-11-03 Thread gifutiger
Greetings Jeffery,

Jeffery after you have created (formatted) the disk and mounted it on
the desktop, highlight the disk and then do a get info.
When the disk info window appears click on the "Lock" and enter your
administrator name and password.
At the bottom of the info window you will see a pain that says
"Sharing & Permissions"
You will see the access that everyone has to that disk and you can
make the changes that you feel necessary.
Under the "everyone" name you will find a privilege of "Write Only
(Drop Box) and that is the setting you want.

Re: 10.5.8 G4 Won't restart

2011-08-12 Thread gifutiger
I started having the about the same problem, however my MDD boot time
was about 5 minutes.

Turns out resetting the PMU fixed shutdown and the slow boot.
I was also having the problem that the system wouldn't wake from sleep
and the main "Firewire 400" stopped working.
Well all is right now.

1. Shut down the platform.
2. Opened the side door.
3. Removed the AC Power Cord.
4. Removed the PRAM battery.
5. Depressed the PMU button and counted to 5.
6. Release the PMU button.
7. Waited 5 minutes.
8. Installed the PRAM battery.
9. Connected the AC Power Cord.
10. Closed the side door.
11. Powered up = took about 1 minute.
12. Firewire 400 - works.
13. Wake from sleep works.

Give it a try.
This is the first time, having a G4 tower that resetting the PMU has
fixed a problem.
I know that when you post a problem one of the first things that a lot
of responders say "RESET PMU"
Well it finally worked.

Cheers

That's a good idea, however it the receiving platform doesn't have a
open disk that the disk image can be installed on then it's a wast of
time.
Or unless the receiving platform's disk can be split into two disk it
would work.
The "Disk Image" can not be installed onto the active disk.

I couldn't find anywhere in your posting which stated that you have
"Temperature Monitor" installed in your platform.
Without some kind of a Temperature monitor installed all that you are
going by is the sound of the FANs.
The MDD will turn it's fans on full if the Temperature monitors on the
motherboard doesn't see the Temperature of the CPU and it could be
that your Sonnet G4 Upgrade card isn't providing the proper input to
the Temperature monitoring circuit.

If you install the Temperature Monitor
http://www.bresink.de/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
When you start up your platform the CPU temp. should be about room
ambient temp.
I have a MDD 1.25Ghz and Temperature Monitor reports my CPU B: 136.4F
and the Disk drive (SMART: 88F) and my fans run at low speed.

Re: MDD Can not find Boot Disk

2011-07-11 Thread gifutiger
MDD Can not find Boot Disk problem has been solved.
My previous platform was a 1999 G4, AGP Graphics the I purchased new.
I just purchased a MDD and move all of my disks from the AGP to the
MDD
Which was all well and good. My main BOOT Disk is a SATA disk
connected
through the ACARD, 6280M - however the disk that was the 1st default
drive
on the ATA chain was a disk that had OS 9.2.2 which worked just fine
for the
AGP but the MDD wouldn't recognize the drive therefore "No Boot Disk"

Thanks for all of the help that I got from John, he really knows his
stuff.

MDD Can not find Boot Disk

2011-07-02 Thread gifutiger
Greetings,

I've given up researching this problem and hopping one of you may have
some suggestions.

I recently acquired a MDD: Hardware Overview:

  Model Name: Power Mac G4
  Model Identifier: PowerMac3,6
  Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
  Processor Speed: 1.25 GHz
  Number Of CPUs: 2
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
  Memory: 2 GB
  Bus Speed:167 MHz
  Boot ROM Version: 4.4.8f2
  Serial Number (system):
  Sales Order Number:
  Hardware UUID:--1000-8000-000393AE8678

and my problem is that if I preform a PRAM reset at boot time I get
the blank screen with the disk symbol and a ? (question mark)

This is true even if I have a "OS X 10.5 DVD" in the DVD Drive.
It's an over kill but I also have four (4) disks in the platform, 2
ea. IDE and 2 ea. SATA. The SATA drives are connected through a ACARD,
6280M which appears to the system as a SCSI interface.

All of the disks have a good system folder and can be use to boot the
MDD.
There are three (3) disk with OS X 10.5.X, one (1) disk with OS X
10.3.X and one (1) disk with OS 9.2.X.

Yes, if I remove all of the disks except one, the IDE (OS X 10.5.X)
which is located in the first disk position, the position where apple
puts the first disk when they sell you the platform the problem still
occurs.

When this problem occurs (my own doing) the only way out that I've
found to correct this situation is to do a force shut-down, i.e. hold
down the power button until the system shuts down.

Upon re-powering the platform if I don't hold the "C" key, telling the
Boot ROM that I want to boot from the DVD I'm right back into the trap
of no Boot Disk found.

However holding down the "C" key the MDD will boot into the OS X 10.5
DVD "Commercial Version" at which time I can go the "Select Startup
Disk" and restart into any of my disk,

ABAIK the Boot ROM Version 4.4.8f2 is the latest version for this
platform, however it might have problems, so if anyone has knowledge
of how to redo the Boot ROM I'm willing to give it a try.

I have a disk with OS 9.2 installed so I could boot from that disk and
redo Boot ROM update, but I'm thinking that the install program will
see Version 4.4.8f2 and refuse to install.

Also if anyone knows the direct link to Apple to get the Boot ROM
please give it to me.

Cheers

Harry

Re: Malfunctioning ATA Drive

Can we assume that this configuration did work and that it has failed
recently or is this something that has been added?
If the drive did work and has recently failed, what has changed or
been changed in your platform?
Have you tried plugging the drive directly into one of the internal
Disk Drive slots?

After using DU's check the Disk Ownership to make sure that you are

Before you trash your trusty Mac have a look at this option.

1. Purchase a Antec 430 Watt Power Supply, about $50.00
2. Purchase from Donald Hall, http://atxg4.com/ about $13.00

This is my plan for my 12 year old Mac G4 AGP Graphic.
I purchased new in 1999, or I should say my Wife purchase for me.

Re: Reinstalling OS 9.2.2 and OSX 10.3

2011-01-14 Thread gifutiger
Greetings,

Solved: I changed the NVIDIA GeForce4 MX to a ATI video card that I
have and the load process went all the way through.
After the install completed I switched back to the NVIDIA GeForce4 MX
and everything works fine.
It's strange that the basic loader can handle the NVIDIA GeForce4 MX
video card but once the loading process is handed over to the
incomplete operating system it doesn't know how to communicate with
the NVIDIA GeForce4 MX.

Cheers

Reinstalling OS 9.2.2 and OSX 10.3

2011-01-12 Thread gifutiger
Greetings everyone,

Trying to reinstall (or call it NEW) OS 9.2 and OSX 10.3 on one of my
ATA drives. Right now it is slotted as the second main drive in my
PowerMac G4 AGP Graphics.

The platform is up-graded to 2 Gb. Ram, Processor up-grade to 1.2 Mhz,
ACARD 6280M Drive host controller, 1 ea. 300 Gb SATA, 1 ea. 500 Gb
SATA, just about everything that can be inside of a G4.

My problems are:

1. When I boot from the OS 9.2.2 Commercial C/D everything goes well
until it comes to point that the OS 9.2.2 system should take over from
the loader. Then I get a message that the system can not be loaded and
the I need to hold the "C" key during the load. Which I've done and
still get the same message.

I've found out that I can overcome this message by depressing the
small reset button on the from of the PowerMac G4 AGP Graphics, which
leads to another message "Black Screen" error message at which time if
I depress the small programmers switch on the PowerMac G4 AGP
Graphics. Then the OS 9.2.2 will load and boot to an operational
state.

If OS 9.2. updates are available from Apple I can't seam to connect as
I'm using Wireless to a Belkin WiFi router. I can fix that by
connection to my ISP via ethernet cable. Which I'll do once I've
installed OSX 10.3.X

2. Booting from the OSX 10.3.X Commercial C/D (3 disk set) goes Okay,
I can access all of the items in the first menu, i.e. "Change
Password" "Select Startup Disk" "Disk Utilities" etc. without any
problems.

So I format the disk via "Disk Utilities" and start the 10.3.X load
process, watching the log, everything selected. No problems noted
during loading of disk #1.

Then the problem starts, the system reboots which IIRC is what should
happen, and the system should then eject disk #1 and ask for disk #2,
but when the system boots I get a "Black Screen" and the 1st disk
isn't ejected.

I guess that I should mention the the original video card has been
replaced with a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX which hasn't ever given me any
problems.

I should also mention the I have a 10.3.9.dmg which I can install on
the disk but is has had a lot of stuff removed and no longer supports
anything OS 9

Cheers

Re: RJ 45 Aggravation Update

May I ask if you have a pair of RJ-45 crimpers?
They usually include a place to cut the cable prior to laying the
wires into the RJ-45 connector.

Re: Restoring mail in the mailboxes

2010-12-17 Thread gifutiger
Greetings Tom

If you have your disk, backed up you might try this procedure.

1st open all of your mailbox's using the triangle next to "ON MY MAC"
then select the first mailbox, hold down the "Shift Key" and then
select the last mailbox before the Imported mailbox. Then depress the
"Delete" key, which should delete all of the selected mailboxes.

If there are mailboxes below the "Import Mailbox" repeat the above for
the remaining.

Next open the "Import" mailbox using the triangle.

Then select the first mailbox within the import, holding down the
shift key and select the last one within the import.

Next, using the left mouse button drag all of the selected mailboxes
into the "PN MY MAC" folder.

That should move all of those in the import into the 'ON MY MAC"

The problem with this procedure is that If you have mail in any of the
mailboxes that was put there after the start of your loss will now be
lost.

Cheers

That's an easy question to answer.
Select, highlight the eMail that you want to color then select from
the menu bar "Format" and from the drop-down select "Show Colors" and
when the Color Platen opens select the color that you would like for
that message.

Drag and Drop in eMail

2010-11-15 Thread gifutiger
On my G4, OS X 10.5.8, eMail 3.6 when I'm in eMail if I want to search
for every occurrence of an eMail, in either: From; To; Subject,
whether in All Mailboxes or the current Mailbox I can drag and drop
the From: or To: directly to the search tab and the system will locate
all of the eMails that have that heading.

Or I can "Highlight and Copy" any information such as the Subject: or
other information embedded in the message and paste it into the search
tab and the system will locate every occurrence.

However in OS X 10.6.4 eMail 4.3, the drag and drop doesn't work.
Does anyone else on this list use the drag and drop feature in eMail?
If so does it work and is there some flag that I've missed setting?

I've compared my eMail 3.6 on my G4 against eMail 4.3 on my MacBook
and can not find any differences.

Well that is other than on my MacBook I'm connected to gmail.com via
"recent: gmail address" which might be the problem.

If you are able to see and select the drive then use "erase" before

Re: New install of OS 10.4 on G5 iMac

2010-09-09 Thread gifutiger
Greetings,

Iamanamma, it sounds like you have tried everything, however if I my
suggest,

1. Reboot and do a PRAM reset.
2. Reboot and do a NVRAM reset.
3. Reboot to Install disk.
4. Not sure about 10.4.x as I've never had that version, however on
10.3.x and 10.5.x there is an install option that says "Erase and
Install" As far as I know that option will format the disk to be
installed the best way for the install.

Re: Install script for fresh OS install?

2010-08-03 Thread gifutiger
Greetings,
I've never tried this, but I would think that once you have installed
Leopard that you can just shut down the platform and when it is
restarted it will return to the same screen where it was when shut
down.

You may not get a shutdown button, just do a force shutdown with the
power key.

You may want to try shutting down and restarting once before handing
the box back to you friend.

However be sure to instruct them to read each of the screens before
they proceed to the next one.

As some of the information that is inputted can not be changed later,
or requires a lot of UNIX experience to change.

One item that CAN NOT be changed easily is the Platform Owners Name,
the Short Name, it's just easer to reload the OS if you make a mistake
and/or want to make a change than to try changing those items.

Cheers.

restarted it will return to the same screen where it was when shut

One item that can be changed is the Platform Owners Name, the Short
Name, it's just easer to reload the OS if you make a mistake and/or
want to make a change than to try changing those items.

Cheers.

Greetings Again

This is what my mount point looks like when using the ls -la command.
Starting with cd / using the root login
drwxrwxrwt@ 7 root admin 238 Jul 6 07:12 Volumes
Then moving to by "cd /Volumes" and again using ls -la
drwxrwxrwt@ 7 root admin 238 Jul 6 07:12 .
drwxrwxr-t+ 45 root admin 1598 Jun 23 13:36 ..
drwxrwxr-t@ 44 root admin 1564 Feb 24 11:23 Maxtor 300

As you can see everything belongs to root - admin

Re: Fresh out of ideas on .dmg mounts

2010-07-06 Thread gifutiger
Greetings

Starting with the Disk that your .dmg files are being stored, select
(highlight) then get info, and tell us who has what permissions.
If you are the administrator for the system and you don't have "Read &
Write" permissions, unlock the permissions (a lock icon) and then
select your user name or the "system" and the "admin" users and make
them eligible for "Read & Write"

Then try decompressing .dmg files.

Be careful not to select the button next to the +. - buttons and
select "Apply to enclosed items" as by doing this you can screw up a
lot of other things.

All that repairing permissions does in the disk utility is select a
hidden file and make permissions look like that file. And that file
can get corrupted.

Re: CD Music

2010-07-03 Thread gifutiger
Greetings All

I was sure that this was the answer to my problem of not being able to
write CD's that would play on my Toshiba SD-6109C integrated CD/DVD
player, Amplifier.

Well yesterday I received a spindle of 25 650MB CD disks that I
ordered, however still no luck. Made a disk from iTunes and it still
wont play.
I guess that I'll just give up and tell my wife that she'll have to
play the music on her "Lamp Shade" iMac.

Thanks for everyones help.

Re: CD Music

2010-06-24 Thread gifutiger
Thanks to everyone, I guess that I should have added on the first
post,
I can make "CD's" that play in my Saturn Vue, they also play on our CD/
DVD player in the bedroom and they play on my G4 tower, on my wife's
Lampshade G4 iMac (10.5) and on my 1 year old Snow Leopard Macbook
intel, so those that have concluded that I've used DVD disk I can
assure you that I've picked up the correct stack of platers, The CD -R
are made by CompUSA, and are 700MB single layer units. My DVD's are
made by HP and are also single layer DVD +R inkjet-Printable so
there's no mistaking the two.

As far as replacing the Toshiba SD-6109C, the unit is an integrated CD/
DVD player and amplifier and is the central piece of all items in our
home system. The cost of replacing this unit would be in the
neighborhood of about $500 so I can probably burn through a lot of
CD's before it will be cost effective to replace the Toshiba. If I had
the room I guess that I could get a small unit and plug it into the
Toshiba but I'm not sure if there are any inputs not used on the
Toshiba.

I guess that I should add that I've been working on and with computers
for about 40 years.

Thanks for everyones help, perhaps I'll try using the iTunes
application again. This time I'll see if I can make it burn at a
slower speed. Maybe I'll try burning on the G4 iMac Lampshade,

Oh I forgot to mention that I've tried using iTunes with the G4
running Leopard 10.5 and iTunes on my Macbook running Snow Leopard
10.6 and none of the CD's will play on the Toshiba.

Cheers

That's what I'm thinking, I burned the CD's using iTunes, but I used
CD -R blank disk and it may be that the Toshiba just won't read -R
disks.
What would you recommend as a substitute for the -R disk?

Tried the iTunes, got a lot of CD's that will play in my Saturn VUE,

fewer disks.

CD Music

2010-06-24 Thread gifutiger
Greetings G-Group

I know that this might be the incorrect place to post this question
but I'm hopping that someone can point me to the correct location.

I have some music that is in MP3 and MP4 format however my family room
CD/DVD player is a Toshiba SD-6109C.
Yeah it's at least 25 years old and it doesn't recognize CD's that are
encoded MP3 or MP4 so I'd like to convert the songs to what ever
format that was used a long time ago. Or even the format that is
currently in use for the Music industry. As the Toshiba will play CD's
that we purchase today, so my question is:

"What format does the music industry use and what application can I
use to convert the songs that I have."

Of course I'd like to find an application the is free.

Cheers

Re: SATA DVD drive on PCI/SATA controller?

Greetings

Altho I wasn't trying to connect a SATA drive and a CD/DVD when I
connected two drives the first time I had similar problems.
Turned out the the second SATA cable was bed.

Have you tried just connecting the Pioneer drive to the same cable and

Give it a try and see what happens.

Open your log files and they will tell you why the platform is waking.
I had a similar problem years ago and it was a PCI card that was
having a problem. It stood out like a sore thumb in the log files.
That's why the log files are created. They've been around since the

What dies the console log say happened to cause the freeze.
Even if you have to force a reboot the console log will still have

Re: PM G4 sleep problems

2010-04-15 Thread gifutiger
Greetings,

I suspect that your SATA drive is plugged into a PCI card, I would
make sure that you have the latest card's drivers and or check with
the manufacture to find out if there is a fix for your problem.

You might also want to take a look at your Console log to see id there
is any problems associated with the SATA PCI card. I once had a PCI,
USB card that was having a problem and would wake the system up from
sleep when ever it had a glitch.

Up-date, which doesn't meet with any reason.
I did a get info and checked the Sharing and Permissions which were
"system - read/write"; "admin - read/write"; "everyone - read only" so
just for kicks I added myself with with "read/write" Privileges.
Rebooted the system and every the "Search in Google" function worked
just fine.
Then I removed my Privileges, rebooted and the "Search in Google"
function from mail still worked Okay.

If it happens again, I'll give myself read/write" Privileges and just
leave it that way.

Thanks to everyone that looked into this posting.

Search in Google, from within Mac Mail 3.6

2010-03-27 Thread gifutiger
Greeting Everyone

When in Mac Mail 3.6 if I highlight a word or a phrase and then using
the right mouse button from the drop-down menu select "Search in
Google" nothing ever happens.

Do I have a "Mail" parameter set incorrectly or not selected?

If I due the same from within "Safari" the "Google Search" happens
Okay.

However if I do the search from within "TextEdit" also no results.

I I select the "Search in Spotlight" or "Lookup in Dictionary" they do
the requested operation.

Would like to use the "Google Search" from mail if it works.

Hidden Link Info.

2010-03-20 Thread gifutiger
Greetings G-Group Members

You know when you place your pointer over a word which is a link to
expanded information, a box with the link address will open.

Does anyone know how to prevent this link info pop-up or perhaps
increase the OS's timer so that you have to leave the pointer over the
word longer before the link info is displayed?

To me it is very irritating as the box blocks other information that
I'm reading, which requires moving the pointer.

Re: Spotlight Usage

2010-03-17 Thread gifutiger
Thanks for the reply Bruce.

I'm using 10.5.8 however I think that my problem is solved and I'm not
sure why.
I replaced the external drive case that I was using and the loss of
"Spotlight" indexing information seams to corrected itself.

The external enclosure was a MNSSCOOL, UHB-360US which was holding a
SeaGate 750Gb SATA drive.
It was replaced with a Rosewill RX35-AT-SU BLK/SLV which by touch
seems to be running much cooler.

I recommend the Rosewill RX35-AT-SU BLK/SLV for all that need an
external USB 2.0 enclosure.

Spotlight Usage

2010-03-15 Thread gifutiger
Greetings All

I'm wondering if someone can give me a clue?
Every time that I index one of my external USB drives, the next time
that I load that disk onto the desktop
Spotlight doesn't seam to remember any of the items which were
indexed.
I'm indexing a 750Gb external USB drive, when I'm done the contents
will be available,
however if I eject the drive then remount a few days later, it knows
nothing of the contents.

Am I doing something that I shouldn't or do I have to keep it mounted
forever?

You can do the reset by entering

Re: Disk Utility Hang

Why don't you try memtest with just one memory module installed at a
time.
That way if they all pass you can then move them from one slot at a
time to the next slot and run memtest again.
Troubleshooting needs to be taken down to the least number of
components to be tested.

Sending eMail from Safari

2010-02-02 Thread gifutiger
When trying to send an eMail link directly from Safari (the envelope
icon) I receive the following message.

"An email message can't be created to send the link because Safari
can't find an email application."
"You can use the Mail application included with Mac OS X to send
email. To do so, you might need to install Mail using the Mac OS X
install discs. OK(button)"

I'm almost sure that I've used this feature before however it doesn't
work any longer.

The only eMail application that I've ever used is the Mac OS X
package and it seams to work fine.

Have I done something that is causing this message? I've look in the
Safari Preferences and do not find any options for selecting an eMail
package to use.

Or has Apple done something to Safari 4.0.4 that prevents this feature
from working.

TIA

Greetings

You might try opening a terminal window and log in as super user, then
enter "kill all -9"
which should terminate all process's.

Re: PCI _ SATA Controller cards

2009-12-21 Thread gifutiger
Greetings,

I have a G4 Power Mac AGP Graphics that I purchased new from Apple in
1999, 1.75Gb RAM Memory and an up-grade to a 1.25Ghz G4 processor.

I'm using the ACARD 6280M which seams to run just fine. I've had it
installed for about 2 years. However the 6280M doesn't accept any
external connections. It can only take two (2) internal SATA drives.

Cheers

Re: Can I add another Fan to my G4 Dual 500mhz tower??

2009-11-07 Thread gifutiger

Greetings Tony ( + )!( + )

If you have an open PCI slot, then do a Google search for "pci slot
fan" and you will be presented with a lot of choices. One that I say
was selling for $3.00. You install the PCI slot fan into an open slot
and connect it to an open power connector and you'll extra air flow.

Here is the date that you will find on one of the listings

$3 new from 27 sellers
Improve airflow inside the case;

Built in 80mm high performance low noise DC FAN (2900RPM, 30dBA);

Simple installation;

Blue UV Reactive.

Re: G4 Upgrade - Radeon 7000 card - images freeze and break up

Greetings Corolla ( + )!( + )

I have the Radeon 7000 MAC (AGP) it is a native card and was not

In the "About This Mac/More Info.../Hardware/Graphics/Display" panel
it is identified as
"ATI VGA:

  Online: Yes
  Quartz Extreme: Supported
Display Connector:
  Status: No Display Connected"

Under OS 9.x.x there wasn't any problems, however once I upgraded to
10.3.x then to 10.5.x I need two items from
They are ATI Display Panel "RADON(TM) 7000
1) ATI Display Panel 4.5.7 (6.94MB - Dec. 14, 2005)
2) Retail Update (6.94MB - Dec 14, 2005)

This link should take you directly to the Download page:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/macosx10-4x-3x-radeon.aspx

Once you obtain and install these two items your display and mosizic
display will stop.

It contains scripts for:
01. Add Addresses…
02. Archive Messages…
03. Change SMTP Server…
04. Create Rule…
05. Filter Sent Messages
06. Open Mailbox
07. Open Message
08. Remove Duplicates…

What you describe is exatly the same that I was having.
Used Tech Tools Deluxe "Surface Scan" on my 320Gb drive (took about 12

to rest RIP and have ordered a new drive.

If you have Tech Tools Deluxe run the "Surface Scan" you will be

Re: Spotlight Problem in Mail

2009-03-01 Thread gifutiger

Greetings Linda ( + )!( + )

You might want to try rebuilding the Mailbox file.
You can do this by opening Mac mail, select a mailbox (i.e. inbox)
then select from the main drop-down menu "Mailbox" and select the last
item "Rebuild"
This will cause a rebuild of that selected "Mailbox"

However one short coming is that if you have "nested" mailbox's the
"Rebuild" command will only rebuild the top mailbox. So if you have
nested mailbox's click on the "Triangle" to show the nested mailbox's
and then select one of the individual box's, nest preform the above.

If you have the "Acitvity" window open you can watch the progress of
the "Rebuild"

Cheers

Re: Dead PowerMac G4 Digital Audio Model

Greetings ( + )!( + )

The easiest way to check an A/C power source is to plug a lamp into
the place where the mac is plugged. Not the same power strip but the
same socket.

Re: Problem with Applejack instructions

If the instruction that come with the applejack application are not
understandable then I would recommend that you trash the program and
not attempt to run it under any circumstance.

Re: Restart No Video ... Cold Boot, OK

2009-02-20 Thread gifutiger

May or may not be true, I'm using 10.5.6 on my G4 Sawtooth 1999 model
and if I don't have this installed I have problems especially when the
platform goes to sleep.

Upon wake-up the display is completly hashed and nothing is readable.

Best regards,

Harry

Have you obtained the ATI drivers from http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.HTML
and installed them so that they will load at boot time?
I had a simular problem as you have until I installed them in my G4
Sawtooth

Wireless Router Information

2009-01-31 Thread gifutiger

Greetings ( + )!( + )

I have acquired one of the new Aluminum Macbook's 13.3 and would like
to turn-on the wireless features of my router.

The problem is that I haven't been able to find any plain,
comprehensive instructions. Something that covers all, or almost all
of the wireless router lingo.

I have a very simple (minimal features) Airlink 101 and the booklet
that came with it covers no more that just turning it on and hooking
it up, and of course it is written towards the WINTEL PC.
The Airlink WEB page is also useless.

So if anyone can recommend something that I can read I'd really
appreciate the help.

Best regards,

Harry
