thank you bruce and all! no silly questions with electronic equipment. i would say the main cause of most of my problems are things not plugged in :@* yes, ups was plugged in. yes, plugged into battery backup side, in master receptacle. no, no laser printer!!! horrors!!! no, it didn't beep and is in fact still green. but the battery is prolly dead. OK GUYS, WHAT BRANDS DO YOU PREFER? not sure i want another APC now, am annoyed with them. Belkin, Tripplite? Those pull way too much current starting up, and most UPSes will not work if they're plugged in. Im not sure what the ES series does, but otherones don't work at all, just immediately go into a fault mode. Test: Make sure whatever's plugged into it can take a power off condition and unplug the UPS from the wall. It should start beeping at you, and things should keep running. With bad batteries the ES-500 should beep at you occasionally and show a yellow (iirc, I don't have one of those in the office right now) Battery Fault LED. Well, I can understand the annoyance but you ARE getting their low-end stuff. In our experience the ES series has been reasonably reliable in use, but our servers and our own workstations are protected by SmartUPS models, not the BackUPS series. The kicker is the cheapest of those is $330. http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SMT750total_watts=50 Batteries last a variable amount of time, but average about two-three years, and we usually get a couple battery swaps before they die of something else. Note, these are the ones living in hot dusty phone closets; our server racks have their own rackmounted ones that are very expensive but rock solid. I'm not sure anyone's low end equipment is any better. I've seen Belkin's stuff die quite quickly, and have no experience with Tripp-Light (only ever used some of their line conditioners on scientific instruments in the past. Those were really good, but IIRC quite pricey at the time. OK GUYS, WHAT BRANDS DO YOU PREFER? not sure i want another APC now, am annoyed with them. Belkin, Tripplite? I've got 3 APC ES 550s and a 350 around here. Also have a Belkin. These are all the lower end models, I refuse to pay more than around $50 for a UPS. All have been working fine for years. The Belkin is interesting in that the battery that came in it was only a 5Ah, but the battery compartment was large enough to hold a 7Ah replacement. When looking for a replacement battery both were on the list. The larger the Ah the longer the backup power will last. I've never had a low battery indicator work yet. Every time I've been alerted to a bad battery is with a power failure and a non-functioning UPS. You didn't say which model UPS you were using, but more than likely you could swap out the battery from your sons working UPS and test it.
