A somewhat related digression for the original topic ... Editing a
binary info.plist can be (easily IMO) done with the Property List
Editor app included as part of the XCode Integrated Development
Environment (IDE).

The entire IDE is a "free with registration" albeit rather large
download from the Apple site. I think but do not know that it is
included on the Leopard and Tiger retail DVDs. Not sure whether it is
on the install media included with a Mac. I never looked.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xcode

Perhaps there are also other (binary) property list editor apps out
there. I never bothered to look since the Apple provides has always
been more than sufficient for my needs.

Yes. But then Apple should make available and allow us to buy
replacement software to use computers that get "lost" from the
installation disks that came with them.

Yes, I believe a reinstallation would solve the icon problem, but
that's like shooting a gnat with an atomic bomb. In earlier versions
of OS X all installations with a retail installer disc were identical
no matter what Mac model you were using. Starting in Tiger or Leopard
the installer started locking the installation together with the model
of Mac used for installation. This was a really minor thing, and AFAIK
the installed system still behaved identically as before, but now the
model of the Mac and the serial # of the Mac were placed into a file
(I assume a binary info.plist that's not easy to locate or edit) so
that the About This Mac and some associated icons custom to the
specific model are permanently fixed at installation. I assume Apple
did this because they wanted to identify unauthorized installations,
and a mismatch between the installed System and the actual Mac would
allow them differentiate legitimate installations from others? I found
this to be bothersome when working on older Unsupported Macs. If I
used a supported Mac to make the installation, the model, serial #,
and certain icons would be those of the Mac I installed with, rather
than the Mac I was using the System with. I assume is your problem?

Re: Change computer icon

2010-08-30 Thread Kris Tilford

I'm not an expert on icons, but here are some ideas.

The OS X System icons for Leopard 10.5 are located in
System>Library>CoreServices>CoreTypes.bundle>(control-click) Show
Package Contents>Contents>Resources.

These are System files, and as such, the ownership and permissions are
important, and if you change any of these files, the new files while
likely need to have the EXACT same File name & ownership/permissions
as the original. I suspect that the Computer icon may be set in the
info.plist file, which in this case is a binary file that's not going
to be possible to edit easily. If the Computer icon is set in the
info.plist file, the only way to change it would be to find the icon
that's being used now and replace it with whatever icon you wish to
use. Be sure to keep a copy of the original, and also name the
replacement identical to the original with correct ownership and
permissions.

You will see a number of .icns for various Mac models. There is a
generic com.apple.mac.icns that looks like an iMac but is actually a
monitor, that one often gets substituted if a specific icon is not
available. Also, for some reason, the iMac G4 15 is often substituted.
Figure out which icon shows up in your sidebar and change its name to
something else, or move it somewhere else. Then pick out one that
looks most like your computer (for example, in place of a TiBook 800
you might pick the ibook g4 or the macbook pro icon). Change the name
of that icon to the name of the one your system was using. Reboot and
enjoy.

The sidebar in the HDD system widow. It shows all the availible
devices and network choices along with places and major folders.

Ok, I see the thing, though I don't use it much. I don't have
"Computer" checked so only see icons for hard disks and servers.
Checking that box gives me a "generic" icon showing a lampshade Mac
instead of my MDD. Must be Apple programming in the system as in the
old "dogcow?"
