Ticking PSU - Quicksilver G4
Not sure how to dredge up an old thread since I receive the digest so cannot hit reply to an individual topic. I had a problem a few weeks ago with a ticking PSU on my quicksilver and was advised to replace with either a stock psu or adapt an atx power supply. In the end I went down the conversion route and after a few hours wasted pushing staples down atx connectors I gave up and bought a connector from Ebay. This came with instructions for fitting (swap round the 4 pin power connector, another half hour with the staples) and connect the casing fan to a spare connection (about 5 minutes work with cable-strippers and insulating tape) Pretty stress free really, with the only permanent alteration being the fan connection. I have the case open with the atx unit sat next to the machine and it runs great now. There is no 25v supply provided but i've not missed this (i think it is only required for sleep mode) If anyone finds themselves in the same situation, i got the cable for around £10 from an ebay seller called jennys79 on the UK Ebay site. Anyway, thanks again for all the information from the group. Ticking PSU - Quicksilver G4
Hello Just picked up a non-starting quicksilver. Power button will flash but not stay on, some flickers of motherboard LEDs etc. Whenever a power-supply is attached to the PSU I get ticking from the PSU itself. The PSU is currently disconnected from everything and is out of the case, when I attach a power lead I get the same clicking. Looks like the PSU is toasted but I just wondered if anyone has had any luck simply blasting canned air into the PSU to clean out the dust etc. Also, what are my chances that the motherboard has been damaged by the problems with the PSU ? Many thanks everyone Nick -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. This is a common QS issue. The PS is dead. The logic board is likely alive. I asked on this list a while back and got a couple links to modifying ATX power supplies to work. Search the archives. The professor whose computer it was decided to go for a real QS power supply, it cost about $230 or so, IIRC. -- Bruce -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. adapting ATX power supplies has it's drawbacks. Look into it though. I would also check eBay for a stock PSU -Jonas -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
