I have a DP 533 DA, and I also installed a flashed GeForce 6200 AGP card. It made a significant difference; between that and an Acard SATA card, my machine is pretty useful. My test application was Klondyke Forever; the animation with the Rage 128 card was unusable, but with the 6200, it runs smoothly and easily. The one limitation I find with this machine is YouTube. I'm a career college instructor, and there's a lot of video resources on YouTube that I can't use with this machine. It just takes too much CPU horsepower. Although this machine is fine in most other respects (browsing, streaming audio, office applications, etc), that one issue has me looking wistfully at used G5's. I love the historical Jazz performers you find on YouTube. Same bad behavior with YouTube videos. I believe its actually Adobe's Flash Player we're having difficulty with playback in our browsers. If I download the YouTube video, it plays fine using VLC. No herky- jerky behavior like in the browsers. I think at the lower end of the scale like a 16mb 2 x AGP vs a 16mb PCI card there would be very little difference but when you start to compare a 128mb PCI vs a 128mb 4 x AGP card there would be a much bigger disparity in performance. It is stable , fast ( fast enough for my CAD program anyway ) easy to work on and easy to expand. I earn a good living using this machine so your GigE still has many useful years left in it for sure. What budget are you setting for the video card ? Look at the games your kids intend to play on this machine then see what the min system requirements are for each game. For the time, the 32MB Radeon 7500 was a significant upgrade from the 16MB Rage. The other option is a GeForce 2MX. IIRC, they were pretty much top of the line then. Twice the vram and faster processor yielded a significant speed bump. Here is a link to a Barefeats test of the Radeon, GeForce and the Rage in a 466 DA. http://www.barefeats.com/graphiX.htm While the DA has a 4X AGP, the speed differences will be similar to a 2X slot. It shows the Radeon and the GeForce as anywhere from 5% to 300% faster than the Rage Pro. I would go with one of those as a bang for the buck test. Now if you have games that run under OS 9, there is a pci card that blows them away, the VooDoo 5 5000. The meanest, badest, fastest pci video card, but not supported under OS X. Has anyone tried the 64mb ATI Radeon 9600 Pro shipped with 2004 PowerMac G5s in older G4 towers? My friend`s G5 uses this card and I would like to know if it could be replaced by something better and moved to the G4 Gigabit. This would be a symbiotic move between the Macs! Searched Google but it isn`t clear if this card can be used in AGP x2 slots! It's not dedicated. You can use one of the other 33MHz 64bit slots for a video card, and put another card in that video slot. I did this once with a 66MHz PCI sata card.
