Ok. Then install AppleJack. It is a shell script that runs in
Single User Mode. In that mode, it can do a full repair of the disk
volume, as if you were booted from some other disk.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/applejack/

Run the AppleJack installer.

Then to run AppleJack, reboot your Mac while holding down cmd-S.
This will put you into the raw unix shell - the underbelly of OS X.
Then type the command 'applejack' and hit return. It will then give
you an old fashioned menu. Tell it to do everything.

everything, btw, will include clearing the kernel cache just like
OnyX can do. Of course, this is done after that all-importand Repair
Disk step.

slowing it down. I'd appreciate any input you may have.

First, run a Verify Disk pass on your HD(s) using Disk Utility. If
it finds any errors, boot on your OS X DVD and run Disk Utility from
there, and repair the disk(s).

Next, run the three maintenance scripts (daily, weekly, monthly,
they're called) from Apple, then clear your user, system, and kernel
caches, then reboot. Do this all with a free tool such as OnyX.
Note that the reboot after clearing your kernel cache will take quite
a bit longer than normal, because it has to rebuild that cache.

This all won't rule out the possibility of a failing HD. So it's a
good idea to run a full backup. Our fav tool for that is also
free... CarbonCopyCloner

I wouldn't go below 10% free space (or 6GB in your case), that should be the
minimum.

I talked to someone who said my hard drive may be about to

Usually, slowing down is not a sign of impeding HD death. Strange noises
(tak-tak-tak, click-clack...) are.

But a good backup is ALWAYS a good thing to do. ;-)

He also said the TV shows I've bought from iTunes could be

I can't see why those files could slow down a computer.
No file, on its own (I mean, not running/playing), could slow down the
computer.
Unless - as I said above - those files filled the HD, leaving little or no
free space.

There is about 10 gigs left on the drive. I was thinking about getting
a second hard drive.

I run the disk utility, and I usually go straight to repair disk
permissions. I have MacJanitor. Is that program not good enough? I did
have OnyX but I took it off my drive. Maybe I need to go get it back!

That's enough space, so the slow down isn't from that.

A second HD would make your life easier, though. You won't have to always
keep an eye about the space left.

I run the disk utility, and I usually go straight to repair disk
 permissions.
No, we were talking about Repair disk; that's totally different from
Repair permissions.

Couple of ideas...

Open Activity Monitor (in folder Utilities), and check if any process is
hogging CPU% and/or Memory.

It's really bad on Facebook but it's
happening at other times too. There is often a lag when I type.
When this is happening, by any chance you have any web page open?
Some web pages are full of scripts and other gadgets that can slow down an
old computer like yours.

Try working with no unneeded app (especially a web browser) open, and see if
this change anything.

Thanks!
