Re: [Audyssey] Got an offer for any game developer.
Hi Michael, right. That's perfectly understandable. As a child of the 80's E.T. wouldn't be E.T. without the sounds and music. However, to do it right I'd also have to look around for a copy of the movie as I have not actually watched it in like 20 years. I believe my son has a copy in his bedroom, and I'll have to ask my wife if she can find it. Cheers! On 5/22/2012 1:17 AM, michael barnes wrote: Hey, Thomas. I like your idea on the game! Re: [Audyssey] Information on the offer and game.
Hi Michael, One problem though. E.T is a copyrighted work so the developer who does this could technically be in violation of U.S. copyright law. I have no idea if Universal Pictures would be willing to take it that far, but I propose some flexibility in terms of storyline and/or game play. Although, the Atari game itself was rather generic. As I recall basically all the levels were pretty much all the same. E.T. flew left, right, and up and down picking up chocolate candies and retrieved pieces of his interstellar phone. there was an F.B.I agent who attempted to steel his phone, and a scientist who would capture E.T. and take him to a laboratory. Over all a pretty generic game concept that wouldn't necessarily require the E.T. trademark and original music. However, as a child of the 80's myself I do confess having the original music and sound effects would be rather cool. So I suppose if a developer wrote it as fan fiction, a retro remake of sorts, he might be able to sidestep any copyright issues. After all, that movie is now 30 years old, and the original game turned out to be something of a financial flop for Atari. Its not likely people are going to scream too loudly about a retro remake at this late date. :D On 5/21/2012 11:23 PM, michael barnes wrote: Hello All game developers. I am also willing to work some kind of payment to the one who decides to do this for me. I am asking for at least three months to six months and I am willing to pay one hundred to two hundred dollars aswell. Now here is the game inquirie. The name of the game is E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, and the story of the game is base on the movie. In the movie E.T. gets left behind on Earth and he befriends a boy name Elliot, Elliot must help E.T. to phone home the spaceship. To do this task E.T. must avoid government agents and scientists, if he gets caught then that is the end of the line for him. At the same time Elliot must help him and avoid the same people aswell or it is the end of the line for him. I been also doing some thinking aswell on the type of game play, the gameplay can be a mixture of different forms. Once someone has agree to create the game then I can talk with them on the levels and controls sound effects and music. So if someone wants to just do the Atari version or an actual level game well that can be up to me and the developer. I hope someone will be willing to do this project, and another thing is that the developer can sale the game to make money for themselves or just give the game out for free and ask for donations. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Muds and Linux
Hi all, I just thought since so much discussion has been about mud clients for Windows, Mac OS, etc I thought I'd pipe up here and give blind users an idea of how I play muds on Linux. For this example I'll use Alter Aeon simply because its the most accessible. I'm currently running Ubuntu Linux 12.04, and Orca 3.4.2 and I can say using the default Linux telnet client most muds are accessible. Orca does a fair job of keeping up with messages and I have no problems playing Alter Aeon etc. You need to start by opening a terminal window. Usually if you are using Unity or the Gnome desktop alt+control+t will launch a terminal. If not press alt+f2, type gnome-terminal into the run dialog, and press enter. Now, you have a command prompt. Simply type a command like "telnet alteraeon.com 3000" into the terminal window and press enter. Voila, it will bring up the Alter Aeon login screen. To review the text use numpad+7 to read the prior line, numpad+9 to read the next line, or numpad+8 to read the current line, etc. Basically, all the normal Orca screen review commands work here so its easy to go back and reread something if you missed it for some reason. Anyway, type your character name, press enter, type your password, press enter, and you are ready to play. As I said earlier latest Orca, version 3.4.2, is very good about reading the text prompts as they appear and if you don't mind playing without sound effects I find the Linux telnet client to be the most accessible and user friendly way to play muds on Linux. Re: [Audyssey] can't run Entombed 1.05 B
Hi Keith, This was just put up on the entombed list. Try it and see if it helps. - Original Message - Hello, Here's what the last email said: 1.05b is a test beta version, hence the b after the number. It has problems installing the SQL Compact components, let me post the instructions I posted the other day in a few minutes on how to install SQL if you want to try 1.05b again. Otherwise, the last stable version was 1.02k. "The Entombed installer doesn't install SQL Compact 3.5 Service Pack 2 correctly, which this version of Entombed needs to function properly. I'm guessing since others have had this problem, you may also be having the same issue. Try installing the SQL yourself. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5783 This download is a self-extracting exe made by Microsoft. Extract it to a folder you can easily find, which will contain three files: install.txt, SSCERuntime_x86-ENU.msi, and SSCERuntime_x64-ENU.msi As the install.txt states, if you're running a 32-bit version of Windows, install SSCERuntime_x86-ENU.msi. If you run a 64-bit version of Windows, then run SSCERuntime_x86-ENU.msi followed by SSCERuntime_x64-ENU.msi. If you're not sure whether your Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, there's a couple easy ways of finding out. Bring up Windows Explorer to show the list of files and folders on your computer's c: drive, which is where most people install Windows. If you have both a program files and a program files (X86) folder, you have 64-bit Windows. Also check your Windows folder, if you have a syswow64 subfolder, then you also have a 64-bit version of Windows. Otherwise, if you only have the one program files folder and no syswow64, you're running 32-bit Windows. Once you've installed the SQL Compact 3.5 SP2, try running Entombed again." Give these instructions a try if you really want to try getting 1.05b working, otherwise just stick with 1.02k. hth --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Audio Archery news.
Hi Charles, Yes, precisely. that's one of the things I'm still trying to figure out myself. It seems like the argument being made by some blind list members is the opinion they don't need graphics so nobody else does either. That's just being self-centered and is absolutely irrational thinking. If that were the case then we could say Richard De Steno's games don't need sounds either. A deaf-blind gamer only needs to read the text, he can't hear sounds, so we don't need sounds either. So let's get rid of all of the sounds and just use text. That would be totally ridiculous from a blind gamers point of view, because he or she can hear the sounds even if a deaf-blind gamer can't. Same principle applies to having some graphics in audio games for sighted players. Weather we can use them or not isn't the point. The entire point here is to make said games as playable to as many people as possible by adding audio for blind gamers, graphics for sighted players, text for a deaf-blind gamer, etc if possible. In that way everyone has access to the same app but through a different method. Cheers! On 5/21/2012 11:44 PM, Charles Rivard wrote: I can't figure out why blind people don't think there should be at least a little feedback, even if it doesn't aid in the playing of the game, for the sighted gamer. Not really relevant to this discussion either, but, guys like my sighted brother who focus on sound mixing, also prefer apple mac for their work environment - but that's again, my take on apple operating systems - they're good for focusing on certain aspects of operation, but, less so for a somewhat wider range of activities. Hi Desiree, To begin with I doubt many sighted people do take the time or energy to look at perspective audio games. As someone who was sighted for many years I know I wouldn't have been interested in a game that didn't even have some basic graphics for game play. That's because for a sighted person their entire way of life is centered around visual feedback, and telling them they have to do this or that by sound alone is going to be a major turn off. They neither have the practice or skill to do that, because its outside their experience. Therefore some minimal graphics and animation would be required to interest them in an audio game. As far as why Apple is so restrictive its a bit of a long story. It has to do with the fact that Apple was the first to add a graphical user interface to Mac OS, and Apple became a recognized leader when it came to graphics and visual effects. Microsoft tried to catch up in the mid 90's with Windows 95, which was an obvious attempt to capture some of Apple's glory, but to this day Apple has a reputation for being the better OS for graphics designers, the film industry, and a leader in graphical user interfaces in general. Its for that reason we see both Windows and Linux heading towards a more Apple look and feel. Ubuntu has the new Unity desktop and Windows 8 has the Metro screen which are obvious attempts to copy Apple's own graphical user interface and support more touch screen devices. Its for this reason Apple guards its position as a leader in the graphical user interface field, and require that anyone who develops for their OS meet certain standards for seamless integration between apps and OS. For instance, if you have a program launcher with just text and no flashy graphical icon forget it pal Apple will reject your app because they expect program launchers to have a certain look and feel regardless if you can see it or not. If they let Liam or anyone else do what they want the over all visual experience, the user interface, will suffer because they chose not to follow Apple's design specifications. Windows on the other hand has standards, but it always has been understood that a developer was free to do what he or she wanted with the tools. Microsoft felt that being more open with the user interface, by not restricting users, that more developers would be willing to develop apps for their OS. Which has obviously paid off for Microsoft in the long run, but most third-party developers do attempt to stick to Microsoft's standards anyway unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise. As for Android vs iPhone we are comparing apples and oranges. Google has adopted a more open interface, and anyone who knows a bit of Java is free to write an app for Android. All the same there are standards one can choose to follow, but aren't forced to use them. With iPhone everything is proprietary right down to the language, SDK, and tools used to write the app so a developer has less say so. In short, its just company policy and it isn't up to us developers to make the rules like it or not. Cheers! Besides, even if they did download the game, how many of them are going to have the patience to actually play using only their ears? And, speaking of Windows, most of this thread has been centered around the standards developers must meet for Apple and Playstation. Why is Windows so different? Microsoft gave people the freedom to choose between many different programming languages and versions of its OS. Why then should Apple be any different? Re: [Audyssey] Got an offer for any game developer.
Hi Michael, HI'll have to think about that. Although, I do vaguely remember the E.T. game it wasn't one of my favorites for a number of reasons. First, I have always thought Atari just wrote that game to attempt to cash in the box office success of the movie, and the game itself was something of a major disappointment. It was basically the same level being played over and over again with E.T. picking up pieces of candy and locating pieces of his intersteller phone to call his rescue ship. In short, the game play in the original Atari version was a bit boring, and I'd feel strongly tempted to design a more entertaining game if possible. So I guess my willingness here would largely depend on how flexable you were with the original game play. If you want an exact copy of the original I doubt I would be interested because I just never personally liked that game much. However, if you are thinking of a new arcade game using the E.T. storyline I might be interested. Let me know what you think about this. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Audio Archery news.
Hi Desiree, Perhaps the term "freak out" is over stating the case. Its more a matter of if a person downloads a game or any other application they expect to see something appear on the screen. If they double tap the launcher expecting some graphics, text, buttons, or whatever and end up getting a totally blank screen they are bound to assume the worst. Either their is something wrong with the program, perhaps something wrong with their phone, and will call Apple's support to find out why nothing is appearing on screen. The absolutely last thought they will have is this was made for blind gamers so Liam intentionally left the window blank. That just wouldn't occur to a sighted person unless they are told that in advance. To give you a real world example here let me tell you about a tech support question I had some years ago. At the time I was developing Montezuma's Revenge and it was in the early beta stages. A sighted person stumbled upon my website, downloaded the game, and e-mailed our support address saying their was something wrong with the graphics in the game. He said he could here the sounds and music, but the screen appeared totally black Even though I said on the website that it was an audio game, it was for the visually impaired, etc he still assumed something was wrong when no graphics appeared. I wrote back to him and basically repeted the information that was on the website that I was developing the game for blind gamers, that it was audio only, and that there were no graphics in the game. I then mentioned to him that there was a similar project being developed on the Retro Remakes website for sighted users, and he might want to try that version instead. You want to know his reaction? He wrote back, and I could tell by the tone of his message he was a bit irritated. He told me that I had waisted his time with a piece of garbage, that I should have stated there were no graphics in the game on the website, and that it wasn't worth $35.00 USD without graphics. The point I want to make here is even if Liam or anyone else says this or that game is an audio game, is for the visually impaired, etc there will always be someone out there who won't understand what that means and will purchase the game from the app store assuming that there will be graphics in it even though the description states this game was developed for the blind. Having it start with a blank screen is the last thing they'll expect unless Apple or Liam stress the fact there are no graphics. As for Liam's choice to develop games and apps for a restrictive operating system like iOS there are perfectly good reasons why he might choose to do so. First, as Cara pointed out a couple of weeks ago the number of blind iPhone users is in the thousands, and if a game developer wants to make money at audio games that's a much larger market today than Windows PCs. Second, is convenience. Its much easier to put your iPhone in your backpack, pocket, etc and take your phone with you than say a netbook or full sized laptop. Its so small and portible a person can take it with them while they ride to the store in a car, ride to and from work on the bus, use it in a subway train, or use it on a long flight between airports. Basically, its more practical to play games on a person's iPhone than their PC, because its more portable. Finally, personal choice. If a developer like Liam uses their iPhone a lot more than their Windows PC it would make sense he'd want to spend his time developing games for that device than the others. I have similar motivation with Linux based apps. For example, a lot of people know once I finish developing Raceway and Tomb Hunter I'm going to focus more time and energy on developing games for Linux. Its not because there is more money in it, not because there is a small but growing comunity of Linux users, but because I use Linux much more than I do Windows and I personally have a vested interest in games being produced for that OS. I figure Liam's decision is similar. He may be doing it for no other reason than he has a personal vested interest in developing more games for his iPhone because he uses it a lot more than his Windows computer back home. Make sense? I can't figure out why blind people don't think there should be at least a little feedback, even if it doesn't aid in the playing of the game, for the sighted gamer. Using that logic, there should be no sound for any game designed for a deaf gamer. Of course, if there were sound, maybe a blind player could play the game, too? [Audyssey] Information on the offer and game.
Hello All game developers. As you all know I am offering to pay someone if they are willing to create a game for me! Well I have been getting emails about the game and so I am going to share what kind of game I want and the story and object to the game. As far as putting graphics in the interface goes, I don't think that would be too much to ask of him. However, this argument about whether or not sighted people freak out at a blank screen seems silly to me. If a blind person chooses to turn the screen off, and a sighted friend picks it up, won't they be looking at a black screen? You don't see them freaking out about that. Of course, one would hope that if it was a friend or family member who picked up the device, they would know and understand why. But if that option exists anyway, the issue of a black screen being possible, even if it is application specific, doesn't seem like such a big deal. Re: [Audyssey] Audio Archery news.
Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Audio Archery news.
Desiree, Here are some answers to your questions: As a sighted person, I find it highly unlikely that any 'pure audio' game would be popular with the sighted community. Games that are very audio heavy can work for the sighted, but unless there are at least some visual cues, the game will be lacking. The cues do not need to be large or significant, but they are as important to us as stereo audio is to you. Regarding Windows versus Apple and the Playstation, they are in fact extremely different. Both Apple and Playstation environments are very rigid and sanitized, whereas the Windows environment is extremely open. That said, there's something deeper going on: Apple computers from the beginning hit the big time via the publishing and visual arts industries. The Playstation was even more focused on visual entertainment - one of its key selling points was the sheer amount of video processing power available for it. Windows PCs on the other hand, were considered to be the boring yet reliable workhorses. It only made sense for screen readers and audio-based software to show up there first. As for the IPhone versus Android, yes, the Android market is much, much more free and open. The IPhone market, just like the Apple Mac Store, enforces very strict rules on what you are allowed to do, whereas pretty much any idiot who knows java can put out an Android app. One need only look at the available mudding clients for these platforms to see the difference: I know of one mudding app for Macs - Savitar. I know of zero mudding apps for the Playstation. But there are at least a hundred of them for Windows PCs. Re: [Audyssey] Entombed, what is the point of the bizarre?!!
HI, Double check the version you are running. If it is 1.02. then you should consider going to 1.05B. But if you are in a game, finish it first since the game files would not be compatible. If you are indeed running 1.02I, then download the file from the website and make sure it is 1.02K. There should be no problem with putting version K over I. IF you are indeed running version I, then that would explain a lot. HI, Not even sure there is going to be an update. But the game did say that it was going off line. So, you can: 1. Keep trying to log into the game. When the server is back up, you can log in. And not a second before. 2. If a new update is necessary, the game will tell you so. Go grab it, install it, and then log in. 3. Wait to see if Aprone posts anything here or on audiogames.net regarding status. Personally, I would start with #1. The game will tell me if #2 is necessary. To complete #2, go to audiogames.net look here, or go to the website for a download link. The link for the forum on audiogames.net regarding swamp is http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=95052#p95052 This is the last page of the talk. Re: [Audyssey] Audio Archery news.
Hi all, I would just like to pose a few questions here. Do sighted people even buy audio games from the ap store? I can see how they might look at them out of curiosity, but I've known very few sighted people who gave a thought to audio games (or knew they existed, for that matter) for Windows, so why should this change just because it's an Apple product? Besides, even if they did download the game, how many of them are going to have the patience to actually play using only their ears? And, speaking of Windows, most of this thread has been centered around the standards developers must meet for Apple and Playstation. Why is Windows so different? Microsoft gave people the freedom to choose between many different programming languages and versions of its OS. Why then should Apple be any different? Finally, what's the difference between developing games for the Android and games for the IPhone? Does Google impose such strict standards of quality as well? [Audyssey] Wizard's castle was, Anyone ever heard of a game called CastleQuest?
Hi. the only wizard's castle I've ever herd of is this one http://www.wurb.com/if/game which still has a zcode version and thus is playable on any machine with a zcode interpreter. the game is a little like self destruct or the escape game braillesoft have, in that you play in a grid like maze. Using a lamp or flaires you can see what is in the rooms around you, and so decide to go in or not. The object is to recover a mystical orb, and actually for a very simple game from the early 1980's it's quite fun. I have however been in two minds about adding wizards' castle to the audiogames.net db, sinse there are slightly graphical ascii options, indeed in some reviews wizards' castle is described as the father of nethack and other roguelikes, and roguelikes aren't to my mind easy enough to play with a screen reader (probably requiring a braille display), to make them truly accessible, ie, playable by a blind person with approximately the same effort as a sighted person. Wizards' castle however may b an exception sinse the only real need for ascii is using the flaire, And the message you get is a report about what is in the 8 rooms around you, like . . M . .P O GM In this example, you've got a monster north east of you, a pool to the east, and an opening to the southwest with some gold south, and another monster to the south east. I cam make sense of this myself using the virtual focus with hal, but I'm not sure whether it's reasonable to expect other people to or not, sinse on the one hand it's just one message in a game, so isn't like trying to scope out massive ascii information in a game like rogue (everything is pure if style text), on the other, it's not really clear if you don't know what the things are, or are just going off straight out text output to the zcode interpreter. What do people think? Btw, it'd probably be possible to change the output of the flair to read something a little more informative for a vi user, sinse it's an inform game and the source code is available, but I don't know nearly enough about inform to do that. Re: [Audyssey] Anyone ever heard of a game called CastleQuest?
It's a dam shame castlequest went down the tubes, though given that justin describes hunter as having "heavy overtones of an adventure/role playing game" when it's in effect an arcade game, i'm not sure how cq would stand up to something like entombed for complexity and features, though of course given the features listed on the old site it might have been a step beyond all of bsc's other offerings. However you look at it though, it's a shame cq wasn't developed, and even more a shame that Justin has had to give up full time audio game developement. I'd really be interested to see what he could've done if bsc games had carried on with their developements all these years, even if the third party developer he was working with for cq baled at the last moment and he had to drop the project, indeed, with the move away from arcade style games, fine examples of this style though many of bsc's titles were, it would've been interesting to see what Justin could've come up with in another arena. Re: [Audyssey] Got an offer for any game developer.
Hi Michael, Well, could you please let me know which Atari game you are interested in. This does sound like something I'd be interested in doing depending on which Atari game you are talking about. I'm something of a fan of the Atari myself so certainly would be interested in working on a free lance project like this. As you may or may not know I grew up playing the Atari 2600, and am personally familiar with most if not all the games ever developed for the console. So as a result I may be one of the few developers who has first-hand knowledge of how to develop this game, and make it as close to the original as possible. So I'm curious to know which Atari game you are interested in, and of how much money you propose to put forward for development expenses etc. Plus it would be helpful for you to specify a time frame/schedule for the project so I can work around my own personal schedule to meet your stipulations etc. Cheers! [Audyssey] Entombed, what is the point of the bizarre?!!
Hi Entombed players, Okay, I know I've asked bout the bizarre in the Twilight Town, but it is really starting to get on my nerves. Every time I try to sell something, it tells me that I cannot place that item up for sale. Then, when I try to buy something, (I have no trade coins, an exchange rate would be nice to convert gold coins to trade coins, for a price of course, a merchant has to make a profit after all, right?). Anyway, I try to see if there are any items from a specific category, and I get that exception window that pops up and has the details button, a continue button, and a cancel button. If I click on details, it crasshes the game, and drops me to the desktop. If I click cancel, it does the same thing. If I click continue, it just brings me back to the bizarre window. If this "interaction" with the game requires me to connect to the internet, and I am patched into the internet with an ethernet cable, why am I getting this error, every time I try to use the bizarre? I'm figuring I should just ignore the bizarre, and try to tromp through the dungeon until the items in the general store change. But, it seems that the monsters are a lot more difficult than I remember them being on level 5. I am in massive need of hearling potions to hearl mangled limbs. Nothing is worse than trying to fight with two mangled hands. Re: [Audyssey] Anyone ever heard of a game called CastleQuest?
Ok, and while it wouldn't operate on my windows7 64 bit machine, it seemed to run alright under my windows XP VMWare virtual machine, since could hear sound effects and music playing, but, aside from that, no idea what was going on after NVDA had read intro to me, and then told me to press any key, which is when sounds started, but anyway.
