Re: [Audyssey] Throwaway Tech was Previous Topic of InteractiveFiction
Hi Charles, I think the primary issue here are there are two basic philosophies here about computer tech. there are those with the mantra if it ain't broke don't fix it and those who say it is broke so fix it. Obviously those opinions are completely opposed to each other and as such things go are both right and wrong at the same time. It is hard to fault anyone for sticking with what works. After all if it suits there needs why push them to upgrade to something else? The reason people are so eager to upgrade is because they realize there are problems with the old tech that either don't matter or of no concern to those who do not choose to upgrade. Just for example we could talk about XP. It was a great OS for its time, but now that it is not getting regular security updates it could fall victim to hackers, viruses, and other forms of malware simply for not receiving regular servicing. A more security conscious computer user would switch to Windows 7 or Windows 8 which is currently getting servicing from Microsoft and that have tighter security built-in. Someone who is not concerned about security will stay with XP out of personal convenience, familiarity with the OS,or just personal preference. Someone like myself on the other hand tries to get the best out of both worlds. Thanks to virtual machines I really can have both and not worry too much about being left behind. All of my computers are either running Windows 7 or Linux, but I also have virtual machines configured for XP to play older games too. Given that I do take security seriously my XP virtual machines are used only for games and older apps, but are never connected to the internet making them as secure as they can be. If I want to use the internet I'll use Linux or Windows 7 with all security patches and updates installed. That way I am getting adequate protection from hackers, viruses, and other malware while still enjoying my older software that isn't being updated. In short, the reason you are getting a but every time you tell someone you want to stick with what works is that the more technically savvy people realize there could be issues with the old tech you may or may have not considered. Like everything in life there are two sides to the situation, and it all depends on how much of an issue those issues are that makes one choose to upgrade or stick with what they have. Hi Charles, All of those are good ideas, but I think you guys forgot something important. When Nicol made the suggestion I believe he was looking for a PC game and not one for an iPhone or Android device. Therefore while I've seen a lot of good ideas for input using a phone I haven't seen anything to address Nicol's specific request for a PC game. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Need Help with She Noire
Hi Dark, Thanks for your help. Unfortunately, with the Windows version, when I select an object like the hammer, I'm unable to use it on the chair or anything else. Instead, I get the with prompt, and can only select items like the tongs, saw, etc. Pressing Enter on one of those also gives me the with prompt, and the cycle continues. Basically, there's nothing I can do, the game's effectively over at this point. I don't like to be harsh, but I must admit, I'm glad I won this game, because if I had bought it I'd be demanding my money back right about now. I didn't find any patches for it on Ticon Blu's site, so if there are any I'll probably have to contact them about it. Even so, this is absolutely rediculous! I thought it was bad when, during the first Inquisitor game for Windows, I encountered a number of bugs, the worst of which occured near the end of the game. S P O I L E R S P A C E When you examine the corpse, the game won't continue unless you click the left mouse button, which you didn't have to do anywhere else! (I found out about that one on the AudioGames forum.) It's because of poor testing like this that I'm no longer buying anything from this company. Enough said. Thanks. It has made it inexpensive to own and thus easy to throwaway and replace as desired for some people. For example, when I was in college I purchased my first laptop for note taking etc. It cost me $1,800 USD brand new from Best Buy. Nowadays I can walk into any Walmart and pick up a brand new laptop for like $325 if I just want a cheap and affordable laptop. Basically, in the span of about fifteen years the cost has dropped to the point I could buy about five new laptops for the price of one I could have purchased in the late 90's. So much so that it costs as much to replace the hardware in them as it is to by new outright in a lot of cases. That said, it is mainly people with lots of money to spend who are doing that. Blind computer users generally are on fixed incomes so can't just run out and buy a new laptop anytime a new model comes onto the market. It is hard enough to get them to upgrade their software like buying a new Windows version let alone the entire computer system. As someone who has fallen on hard times I understand where they are coming from. If we consider the average blind American on SSI makes about$720 per month it is pretty hard to justify spending $325 on a new laptop every so often just to get a software and hardware upgrade when there are more important things like rent, electric, food, and other things that need to be paid. Let me say that $720 doesn't go far these days, and so it is no wonder blind users are less likely than the mainstream public to join the ranks of those who throw away old technology after it is a few months old. With all that in mind as an audio game developer I need to consider that, and do more to be backward compatible than someone like Microsoft just because I can't depend on my customers to upgrade as often as the general public. Re: [Audyssey] Need Help with She Noire
Hi kelly. I got that game, now I forgot what I did, the game is logical, that is everything is in inventory. you have a few things you don't use, hammer with hatchet, and tongs and cutters I think. But to be honest some things had me scratching my head for a while. Where I am stuck is not shin nwa but flarestar, I have managed to get to level2 of training but can't seem to escape the drone. I did manage to get to level3 once but then I couldn't find the keys to free the 2 droids, and start the game propper the turret is a bare to. I took advantage of the sale this month so it was only 50 nz bucks for 3 games, audio speed, flarestar and shin nwa. It would have cost me 30 pluss for each game. And now I have everything bar the inquisitor series which after playing one of them on a friend's system had me so bored I quit half way through those are not for me. Re: [Audyssey] Throwaway Tech was Previous Topic of Interactive Fiction
Hi Shaun, I wouldn't worry too much about Windows 10 accessibility. Accessibility on Windows has been improving with each release, and the version of Narrator that comes with Windows 8.1 is a huge improvement over that of the version that comes with Windows 7 and earlier. I expect to see Narrator has improved in Windows 10 plus Jaws and NVDA will certainly be available as well. However, as to running PC games on your mobile phone that won't happen unless they are written in one of the .NET languages. The reason has to do with major differences in hardware such as CPU. When a Windows application written in say C++ is compiled it is specifically compiled for a specific processor type such as Intel or AMD. If you happen to have a Windows phone using an Arm processor that program isn't going to run because it is the wrong type of CPU. Unfortunately, all the games written in visual Basic 6 are going to have this specific issue since they are all compiled for the Intel family of processors. Another issue with PC games is they probably accept keyboard input and nothing but keyboard input. Naturally all modern smartphones use touchscreens which is a totally different interface. If there is no space key to fire and arrow key to move the game isn't going to know what to do with your touchscreen requiring a keyboard to be plugged into your phone. It would be better for the games input handling to be rewritten for the phone rather than someone grabbing a game meant for a desktop/laptop and expecting it to work on a Windows smartphone. Bottom line, if you think you can buy a Windows phone and start running all your favorite games on it you got another thing coming. Games can be ported to the phone, but not without a bit of time and work. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Need Help with She Noire
Hi Kelly. It might not have been the chair, I'm sure it's a combination of objects, maybe all the ones you'd use as tools, the hammer, the tongs, the file etc. Generally if you choose the wrong object you just get a boop, so you can't make a mistake with the puzzle, just try selecting stuff until you finish, that was generally what I did with all of those sorts of puzzles and why I'm afraid I can't recall the solution exactly. Certainly nobody on audiogames.net has said anything about the game being unwinnable on Windows, and I'm sure someone would have done if that had been so, I personally think you haven't got the right combination of objects yet. Re: [Audyssey] Got It was Need Help with She Noire
Hi Kelly. Glad you got it fixed. I must admit while I enjoyed Noire for the atmosphere and mechanics and at least some of the plot, the game was brought down badly for me by inconsistancies both in the writing and the logic of some of the puzzles, requiring you to use items you supposedly didn't have and occasionally just being a bit odd with the puzzles. Plus, the plot has some holes though that is likely a matter to discuss when you've finished the game. Still it was fun and I do hope we see another Noire game in the future, though I'm looking forward to when Ticonblu's sf adventure game flarestar has an Ios version as the description of that one sounded definitely interesting. Re: [Audyssey] Throwaway Tech was Previous Topic ofInteractiveFiction
Hi Charles, True. Obviously, for people on low income etc it would be better for them if Microsoft continued releasing updates indefinitely, but do to the costs of running a software business such a thing isn't really feasible. Although, that is one reason I use quite a bit of open source software such as Linux. Cost isn't really a factor for me. I get an operating system, screen reader, office suite, and a bunch of other software for basically the cost of a download and a disc to burn it on. Therefore the way I see it if someone wants to stay up to date and is on a limited budget there are options other than Windows if someone is willing to make the conversion to a less expensive alternative. Re: [Audyssey] Kingdom of Loathing question
Hi, It sounds to me like you did not do the Toot Oreol quest; if this is indeed the case, I'd recommend you put anything else on hold before doing that. The sollutionto your problem involves making meat paste, which comes at a cost of 10 meat. You can then combine the two pieces form the crafting page. Re: [Audyssey] Throwaway Tech was Previous Topic ofInteractiveFiction
if you are on a low income you can get laptops from newegg and from blaire technology group for between $200 and $300 and they are quite powerful and run windows7. some with windows8.1. but I've found more games run on win7 even today. I tried win8.1 and it froze and made my CPU keep running at 100% even on the desktop with nothing open. so last night I went back to windows7 professional. that's another thing if you want a long long support cycle with windows be sure to get the professional version never buy home versions.
