[Audyssey] game demos and full versions

2011-05-03 Thread Charles Rivard
If you get a game demo, you get the idea of the game. Once you buy it, you
unlock it and find that the demo scratched the surface. Phil gave the
benefits of buying Tenpin Alley compared to playing the demo. SOD gives you
the first level of the game. Buy it and you have a heck of a lot more
gaming fun. Tank Commander gives 5 more levels with no time limits. Lone
Wolf's demo gives the first 2 of 17 missions, plus the ability to play
almost 100 others that gamers have created. The demo of MOTA, although
still in testing, gives 2 out of how many levels that will be created? My
point is, a demo is a great way to introduce or showcase a game, and if you
like it, you'll like the full version even more. It's up to the gamer, but
the full version of a demo is usually well worth the money spent.

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Free version tenpin alley?

The trouble is that most companies today, in the mainstream, don't
offer demos of games. THey offer trailors. I love our companies,
because they do offer demos, but for some people, buying the full
version should unlock loads of worlds, new equipment, etc. like in
Shades of Doom.

I think that the comment stems from games like Ten Pin Alley and to an
extent, Entombed, that do not differ in gameplay from demo to full
version, only in content. I value this difference enough to buy
Entombed, and I've considered buying Ten Pin Alley off and on,
although (no criticism intended) I enjoy Wii Sports a little more, and
I already have it.
I've often thought that, should I begin to market games once I'm
proficient enough to make them interesting, I'll offer either a
trailor, a very limited demo, or a timed demo. The first is
self-explanatory, the second is a demo like Shades of Doom, where you
run into one additional weapon and two monsters, and the third option
is like Galaxy Rangers etc.

Ten Pin Alley does rather offer a lot of itself up, but this in no way
makes purchasing the full game unreasonable.

What I have come to understand, is that usually demos try to hide the
surprising part so that way they try to get you interested. I mean, if
they put the surprising part in with the demo, it is useless to buy it
since it is not a demo at all

Hi thomas, no worries here, I wasn't about to even think of
reformating, no way. grin

Original message:

Hi Shaun,

No offense, but what is your obsession with reformat, reformat,
reformat, etc. I don't want to sound harsh, but when you get on the
list saying stuff like that it makes you sound like a complete
computer idiot. As a matter of fact reformatting is not the only way
to reset the timed trials, and if you knew half the things you claim
too you would know that by now.

For one thing if you know you are going to do this in advance you can
create a Windows restore point which will back up the registry before
it gets modified. So when the trial ends simply go into Windows
restore and restore your old registry. That's the simplist fix for the
problem.

You can also simply export the registry before installing, and if you
want to run the trial again, uninstall the demo, import your saved
registry, and reinstall it. Again not a big problem if you plan ahead.

If someone didn't prepare in advance it can still be fixed without
resorting to a reinstall. Someone with the skills such as myself can
open the registry locate the keys that caused the timed trial to
expire, and blow them away. Reinstall the game and as good as new.
This method isn't recommended for the average computer user but anyone
with an ounce of programming knowledge who has worked with the
registry before can certainly do it.

Cheers!

Hi Lelia,

Well, basically most game demos store expiration keys in the
registery. If you know how to edit the Windows registry you can remove
those keys and then install and run the demo again. If not nothing
short of a reinstall of the OS will reset the computer back to the
default registry settings.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] game demos - Re: Vipgameszone demos

2007-11-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,
I also baught LW and Shades of Doom, but not immediately. I must have
had the demo of Shades of Doom for three or four months before I baught
it. Main reason was because I had restricted use of area 1, and it was
like a mini game. However, as messages came in on the GMA list about
fighting cyborgs, blobs, temperal disturbances, not to mention the boss
I realised I needed to have the complete game.
Judgment Day is another example of a game which can be played lots
before the customer buys it. Sure you will miss out on the trophies,
killing the boss, but the levels you do get is basically a mini game.
Now, TC was another matter. Even though I would have baught the game
anyway I was frustrated to no end being restricted to 10 minutes. If you
were quick you could defeat the demo, but it also put a restriction on
planning your attacks carefully and doing any advanced strategies such
as hide in the woods until a tank or chopper passes by and ambush them
from cover and stuff like that.

there is so! much! more! in the full version than there was in the demo.
But those demos gave me enough of a feel for the game to tell me that I

that is indeed a point tom, however if the demo is restricted to a limited
amount of playing areas or timeper game (eg, 10 minutes), imho an
 editional
limited time such as 7 days is rather overkill.

There have certainly been occasions where it's taken me quite some time to
get to grips with a game, - particularly for something complex like
 Trek
2000 or Lone wolf, both of which i tried the demos of on several occasions
before deciding to pay for the games.

As with everything though, there's probably a reasonable compromise
 somewhere.

[Audyssey] game demos

2007-01-13 Thread Josh
Hi,

I went to download.com and am downloading two game demos, star wars, empire
at war, and lord of the rings, war of the ring demo. My question is, in the
games for sighted-people, is it like shades of doom where you have to enter
a key to unlock the full game? or, are these demos only part of the full
game which may come on a cd and be over 600mb in size?
I'm downloading them, so I can get the sounds from them using dragon-unpack,
delete the demos off my system, keep the sounds, install visual basic6, and
the directX-8 developers pack, and hopefully making or start making these
two games accessible and completely self-voiceing with the use of text-aloud
to add speech from acapela-pro nextup.com voices where necessary in the game
to make it accessible. Just for your information, lord of the rings, war of
the ring is a strategy game, or is it rpg? I often get strategy and rpg
confused. anyway you can look athe descriptions for star wars, empire at
war, and lord of the rings, war of the ring, at download.com if in fact I'm
able to learn vb6 and develop accessible or my own accessible versions of
these games, I might then look for a harry potter demo on download.com which
I can get sounds from and make into some sort of accessible game.
