Re: [Audyssey] newsgroup suggestion
Hello Nicol, To be honest usenet news ggroups are rapidly becoming a thing of the past, and are being replaced with mailing lists and forums. Most cable internet providers like Road Runner, Comcast, etc don't even offer usenet news ggroup support. So even if a person wanted to access the news group they couldn't if their isp doesn't support usenet news any longer. Those that still do support usanet news have in the last few years began black listing certain news groups because of software piracy, porn, and anything else they believe might offend their customers. While their filters wouldn't effect us so much it is still the idea the internet providers are helping bring an end to usanet news simply by interfearing with a person's choice what groups he or she might want to join regardless if it contains porn or whatever. As far as subscribing to a news group goes not all e-mail clients have built in news group support. I know Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook, and I think Thunderbird does, but there are many that do not. As usanet news continues to dwindle so will the clients that support dwindle. So the fact of the matter is creating a new usanet news group now is pretty much a lost cause since support for usenet news is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. A better alternative to usenet news is a forum similar to what Audiogames.net uses. That way all messages are archived on the server, and can be browsed through online through a standard web browser like Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, whatever. Plus the advantage of using a forum is that you can use an internet search engine like Google, Bing, or Yahoo to find messages if the forum is public. There are lots of advantages of forums, and they are quickly replacing the usenet news groups and even some mailing lists. Finally, as far as news groups saving people from having their mail boxes being cluttered that's true, but news groups can get rather cluttered with messages if they are very active. So one way or another weather it is an e-mail list like this one or a news group you still have the task of sorting through x number of posts one by one. The only solution for that problem is, as I said above, is a forum. At least with an online forum you can read posts listed by topic rather than trying to waid through x number of posts that may or may not be in any kind of order. How the e-mail or news group posts are aranged often depends on your mail/news client. So, in short, to answer your question candedly I definitely don't think a usanet news group is a good idea. Instead of helping the VI comunity grow it would do much more harm than good. It would restrict people access to the usanet news group because of their ISP, their mail client might not even have news support, and it wouldn't even solve the problem that you intended it to fix. Re: [Audyssey] newsgroup suggestion
Hi Thomas, I agree. My ISP stopped providing newsgroups access in June of this year. The only way I can read newsgroups now is by going to groups.google.com, but I don't really care for this approach. Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] newsgroup suggestion
hmmm usernet is old it was round before the net started. I havn't bothered using it and in deed with the appearance of the forum, and email list its really not needed. news groups were the first forum type thing and are just a message board. you need to get a news server ie news.ispname.com. most isps should have news support though a lot don't because news is well old. so a spanking new isp will probably not have news. an older isp may or may not depending on if its phased out and you probably will have to ask support for it as its not coman. usually its news.ispname.com or nntp.ispname.com all the groups are downloaded to your box or the lists are and you brouse. to be honest though I wouldn't bothere with them. klango is a glorified news board anyway, and forums should take place of news groups email lists to. Re: [Audyssey] newsgroup suggestion
Unless I'm missing something, if you get a notification from a news group about a new post being available, it would not cut down on the amount of Email you receive. All this would do is to take more time, going to a link before reading what was posted. If this is the case, I would think it better to leave things as they are, eliminating the middle man and getting your information directly. --- Shepherds are the best beasts! - Original Message - From: Nicol nicoljaco...@telkomsa.net To: Blind Gamers Discussion List gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Thursday, August 12, 2010 4:13 PM Subject: [Audyssey] newsgroup suggestion Hi all I have read in a book about the existance of usenet newsgroups. Re: [Audyssey] newsgroup suggestion
Hello there, If you are on Verizon DSL or high speed internet or Comcast Cable internet..you are plum out of luck! There was a big fuss about 1 year back about child porn on the internet and most of it being up in the newsgroups. instead of deleting the 32-64 newsgroups that were involved...the internet providers decided to go nuclear and delete a whole mess of groups ...in the area of thousands..sigh...instead of getting rid of the offensive groups. what groups were left up there were not worth joining. all the interesting groups had the words alt.binaries in the title. and there were tons of good stuff to download from those groups. there are providers that you can pay to belong to... and these providers supply you with all the newsgroups...over 32,000 of them... but as most folks use torrents to find stuff...I have no idea if folks are still uploading stuff to the newsgroups anymore? --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org.
