Re: [Audyssey] Alter Aeon expansion - level 35
Hi. The network speed actually doesn't matter that much. I played on a 56k dialup connection for years. Only with a slow connection you have to be careful that nothing else is running and slowing your network response time down or you could end up getting killed because you lagged out during a particularly tricky fight. The primary concern is the network's latency rather than to it's data throughput speed. The more latency your connection has, the longer it takes to get a response from Alter Aeon, at least to a certain point. Eventually you'll be more or less unable to go any faster because you're able to go as quick as Alter Aeon itself can. A lot of connections typically seem to have a latency of about 60 ms, at least that's what you get if you run the ping command on google.com. Me I am out in the country and the only kind of internet I can get is celular, and I have a ping response time of about 150ms and I don't have much trouble playing. Of course, when your network is working hard to accomplish a task elsewhere, it'll introduce latency especially if it isn't a very good connection to start with because the mud client and Alter Aeon have to wait for their turn to exchange packets since the network is busy moving data for other things at the same time. In other words you probably already know this but it's possible to slow things down by downloading something at the same time you play so be aware of that if you weren't already. Alter Aeon and your client communicate only in a low bandwidth text message like situation, the sounds the client uses are usually stored locally on your computer so even though you have audio, text messages are causing those sounds to be played either with or without the intent of the mud game itself. There are probably lots of bits and pieces of text not being displayed on screen but which the client you use has prevented from being displayed on the screen and played a sound or spoken an alternate message for instead. I think you already understand this stuff, but in case you or anyone else on the list don't, this might hopefully help. Sent with Thunderbird 3.1.10 portable. Re: [Audyssey] Alter Aeon expansion - level 35
As a Hal user for the last 17 or so years, I am not absolutely keen on that comment really, though sinse Dolphin have only recently released the Hal output api to developers (it was used in quitter), this is understandable. Actually reading the hole mush interface with hal is pretty okay, and I in fact suppliment sapi with my virtual focus for things like pulling names and words off the output. The only reason I can't use Hal fully as I would in playing an if game is that the client won't automatically pass lines of text from the mud on to Hal, though having hal and sapi running together really isn't such a problem. Hi Dave. vip mud works with nvda, sapi jaws window eyes and system access and will output directlyk, you can get it from www.gmagames.com. however, For alterean there is a specific client that comes with such an extensive soundpack and so many shortcut keys it nerely transforms the game into an audio game. though I use vip mud for other muds, I'd strongly recommend you get the mush client soundpack from http://oriolg.es/mush.php I can't say whether it works with nvda, but it certainly does work with jaws sinse that is what it was made for, but also works very well with sapi which is what I use it with. I'd really recommend it as a fantastic way of playing alterean. Beware the grue! Dark, You can actually play the game using a dial up modem once you have the client and/or soundpack downloaded. Your parent's connection should be fine :) Dennis Towne Alter Aeon MUD http://www.alteraeon.com On Wed, Jun 22, 2011 at 12:41 PM, dark wrote: > Hi. > > sounds awsome, always nice to have new stuff to discover and new spells and > skills to use. > > Just a quick question, how fast a connection do I need? Re: [Audyssey] Alter Aeon expansion - level 35
Hello, Which clients are regarded as the best for use with a screen reader? I'm using jfw 11 and downloaded a client can't remember it's name and it was almost unusable I didn't get any feedback and had to continuously use my jfw cursor to find out anything. I'm also interested if any of these clients work with nvda? Thanks. Dave. Hi. sounds awsome, always nice to have new stuff to discover and new spells and skills to use. Just a quick question, how fast a connection do I need? I'm currently at my parents' who have a more minimal broardband package than I do, something like about a speed of 4 or 5 mb rather than the 17-20 I get in my flat. Will this be okay for alterean? if so, i'll look at installing the soundpack on my laptop so that I can play here.
