STFC? what game is that? - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Tuesday, April 12, 2011 8:06 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Pipe 3 Hi Michael, Well, like Charles mentioned the really big issue is time. The lack of money may certainly be a factor why someone will stop producing games, but the time it takes is definitely a factor. It isn't necessarily as easy as setting time aside to create accessible games because I've personally had days, even weeks, were there litterally wasn't any time left over to set aside for game programming. I think given the fact Justin works some long hours and has a family life too this is the case for him. There just simply isn't time to set aside for game programming any more. Yes, its sad, it sucks, but that's a fact of life. The other issue I was trying to get across is a developers priorities. For instance, when I started USA Games I just wanted to write some games like STFC for fun and there was no pressure involved. There was no time limit, no schedules to meet, and no deadlines. When I took over Raceway and MOTA everything changed over night. It no longer was fun for me because instead of being a relaxing fun pass time game programming was a responcibility, and I started getting e-mail after e-mail wanting to know if and when I'd hurry up and release game x. That just killed it for me right then and there. Besides that in 2008 I began to take Linux seriously as an alternative to Windows. Naturally I personally wanted to port my games to Linux, but of course everyone on preorder for Raceway and Montezuma's Revenge were running Windows. So my desire to create Linux accessible games, and my customers need to have the games written for Windows came into direct conflict. My priorities as a developer had changed even though my customers prefered operating system had not. So now I'm faced with this huge elifant in the room which means I have to take more time out of my busy schedule just to insure my needs and my customers needs are met. I.E. produce a version for Windows and eventually release a version for Linux. That's simply no fun. Not if you wish you could write the game once and be done with it. Cheers! Short answer, no there isn't. As Justin hasn't developed gamesfor a while due I believe to a far more demanding job I'm not sure if there will be a pipe 3 ever, though bsc have recently refurbished their website so it's possible they're thinking about getting back into developement. Re: [Audyssey] Pipe 3
Hi, Oh, I definitely don't believe Castle Quest will ever see the light of day. Not just because of Justin's work load and personal life is too busy for that type of game, but considering how that game was being developed. I think we forget Justin paid another developer to write the game, and when that developer quit he took the source code and everything with him leaving Justin, AKA BSC, with nothing. Upon hearing this I offered my services to help but Justin said he was completely finished with the project. I think he was personally turned off on the idea of out sourcing his games to third-party developers. As it was I had just taken over the Alchemy stuff and probably couldn't have added my full attention to CQ anyway so it probably wouldn't have worked out in the end. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Pipe 3
Hi Dark, Actually, I don't see it the same way. Getting rid of BSC Games and bringing everything under one umbrela www.blindsoftware.com sounds to me like Justin is not going to be reviving his games and other projects. It looks to me what Justin is doing is putting all of his software into a single holding company that will continue to sell his old software, offer tech support services, etc while at the same time not really producing anything new. That's what I would do if I couldn't keep USA Games going and had other software products besides games to offer the community. In fact, after I get USA Raceway and Mysteries of the Ancients out of my hair I do plan to branch out and work on some non-game related projects I've been developing in my free time. For instance, one project I've been working on is a clone of Sony Soundforge which will primarily be for the Linux operating system. Free open source editers like Audacity are ok, but I've yet not found anything that is accessible and good as Soundforge Pro for Linux. So I've been working on a sound studio/editer that will be similar to Soundforge. As far as weather it will be open source or sold for a small fee I haven't decided yet. Another project I have plans to write will be a good accessible OCR package for Linux. Something like K1000 or Openbook, but will be open source and can be bundled with Ubuntu etc as part of the installation. It will wrap speech-dispatcher and be able to do all the things we expect such as scan and read, flip the pages if you scan them upside down, etc. That way Linux users such as myself won't be behind when it comes to specialized OCR technology. Re: [Audyssey] Pipe 3
Fair enough tom I was just attempting to be hopeful. While I understand the reasons behind Justin's decision, this is I think quite a shame, in fact this seems a generalized pattern in audio game developement I've noticed, people come, develope a game or two, but due to other commitments stop. there are exceptions of course such as Phil Vlasac and David greenwood, but I do think it's quite a shame when someone creates something which is a community favourite then just seems to drop off the radar afterwards for whatever reason or other. I think you're right. Whether you would have burned him or not wouldn't be the issue, but the fact that he had already gotten burned, he didn't want to take the chance again, and he doesn't have the time to develop Castle Quest, darnit. I was looking forward to it, too. And, as you say, after taking on all of the Alchemy stuff, you wouldn't have had the time to develop it, either, unless you wanted to wait until the year 2015 to do your own stuff. I think not?? Re: [Audyssey] Pipe 3
Hi Charles, Well, one reason a developer might want to own and operate more than one site is to simply keep certain types of products separate. I.E. this company/website just handles games, and another handles screen readers, OCR programs, etc he/she might be developing/selling, and another one might be for other projects he/she might be selling. I agree it makes sense to put it all under one roof/one website, but it all depends on if the products are connected/related or not. For example, as I mentioned earlier I'm looking at developing some software for Linux like a good OCR package that absolutely has nothing to do with games. That might be a good product, but would look pretty weird being posted to a website called USA Games Interactive since it isn't a game. Therefore I might want to start up a separate website for handling those other products I'm developing that has nothing to do with USA Games while still maintaining USA Games as a company in its own right. Make sense? Cheers! On 4/11/11, Charles Rivard woofer...@sbcglobal.net wrote: Having everything under one roof, so to speak, like a Wal-Mart, where you can shop at one stop, makes sense to me. Hi Shaun, Yeah, I know. I've talked to him off list a time or two, and for a while he was looking into VB .Net and XNA, but decided against it. So I'm not sure what his plans are regarding games, but his interests seam to be general apps and PC stuff now days. I myself have looked into becoming more mainstream that way. For instance, I'm now heavily involved in the open source movement and I want to contribute more to it. One thing I've thought about sstarting up a Linux based company who developes software for Linux, and have the skills to build and produce my own distribution. There is money to be had in getting a Linux support license and becoming a Linux tech support service and developer. Which I would like since I'm less and less interested in supporting Windows.
Hi Dark, Well, to be honest one of the big problems is there is no money in it. Those of us who are writing games are doing so mainly as a hobby, pretty much volunteer work, until something better comes along. Guys like Liam get a new job that automatically takes priority over L-Works. Dan, as I understand it, got a position with the college he attended so no longer had time for DanZ Games. Justin ends up pulling 50 hour weeks at work that obviously takes priority over BSC Games. Even Philip has mentioned if he gets a real job programming Blastbay Studios is going on the back burner, and he'll release games on an if and when he can basis. Being in a similar situation myself I can't blame them for putting a hold on any games in development to work a real 9 to 5 job. Not only that but things are different since I started USA Games in 2004. Back then it was pretty much assumed everybody, and I mean just about everybody, in the VI community was running Windows. Yeah, there were a few Linux users, perhaps a very small handful of Mac users, but there were so few you could blow them off as not really worth the time and energy supporting. That has really changed over the last few years. Ever since Apple added Voice Over to Mac OS X more and more VI computer users are looking at Mac OS as an alternative to Windows. We've got developers like Cara Quinn who worked on Jedi Quake now using Mac. We have Josh from Draconis Entertainment who is now a full time Mac user. I know there are several others over on the Mac Visionaries list who simply don't use Windows any more, or they purchased a cheap Netbook to run a few Windows games etc they can't run on their Mac. Not only that, but if you haven't been keeping tabs on the Braille Soft poll Linux is getting a fairly healthy number of votes.Last time I checked Windows was at around 133 votes, and Linux had 75 votes. That's better than 50% of the votes were cast for Linux alone. If you put the number of votes for Mac OS and Linux together Windows holds its own, but it is a very very close thing. So Linux and Mac OS are definitely growing markets to explore as far as developing accessible games and other blind friendly products. As for myself I am pretty much a full time Linux user now. The only reason I maintain a Windows PC with Windows 7 on it is so I can do my job, and produce games I can sell to the VI market. Otherwise if it weren't for those two issues I wouldn't have Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 installed on any of my computers. Everything would be Linux. However, as you might guess as a developer we now have to decide what market or markets we want to support. I don't think it is as clear cut as saying 85% of the blind run Windows so let's write Windows only software. I am personally in that 15% who don't really use Windows outside of work so would be ignoring my own platform of choice just to market my games to satisfy a larger Windows market. I'm not really happy with that state of affairs, because if I'm writing, developing, and producing a product it should be able to meet my own specifications too. I've not been able to really do that as I've had difficulty coming up with a good cross-platform design that really works commercially. Given enough time I might be able to do it, but I've got preorders etc hanging over my head like the fabled sword of Damocles. Anyway, even though Windows might be a bigger market commercially speaking it isn't a market I really prefer to support long term myself. At least not directly using DirectX, XNA, and all the Microsoft specific APIs. No, what I've been doing behind the seens with games like STFC 2.0 is I've adopted an open source design using LibSDL and C++. I've successfully cross compiled the alpha with the MingGW compiler so it is certainly possible to create Linux, Mac, and Windows software, but it can be difficult to do if the game inquestion is complicated like MOTA. All this extra work developing a game for Linux, and then making sure it will run on Windows too takes all the fun and enjoyment out of developing it for me. Besides that, there are other projects I've been thinking of developing specifically for Linux I thought would help open the platform to more Windows users. While there are a number of decent apps there are areas like OCR, for example, that doesn't quite compare to Openbook or K1000 I'd like to see someone create. There are a lot of audio editers like Audacity that are ok, but I haven't found anything that is 100% comparable to Sony Soundforge Pro. As a musician I want some quality sound editers like that which would not only help me personally but anyone else who is a musician, game developer, sound effects engineer, etc. There are some apps for Linux like Filezilla which is a good piece of software, but could use someone like myself to go in and fix some accessibility issues here and there so it would work better with Orca. Lots of things like that which would improve access for us and

Hi Hayden, Yeah, I have to agree with you there. A name like www.blindsoftware.com sounds like something APH etc would come up with to promote some blindness related software. Re: [Audyssey] Pipe 3
Hi Michael, Sorry, no. There is no Pipe 3. If I were you I wouldn't really expect one either. Justin has been working pretty hard at his real daytime job the last few years, and has no time to produce games. That's why he closed BSC Games and moved all the games to blindsoftware.com. He's still selling and supporting his existing titles, but I haven't heard of any plans to create anything new for a very long time. As someone who has to juggle real work and hobby work as well I understand full well why he isn't going to be releasing anything like that anytime soon. Re: [Audyssey] Pipe 3
Hi Charles, Hope you don't mind, but a miner correction. There is no www.bscgames.com any more. All of the games have moved to www.blindsoftware.com just in case you didn't know.
