Re: [Audyssey] should I steal these titles?
Hi Ishan, Well, you are out of luck. Taking the name of an existing game regardless if you use its content or not is still not legal. There is something called copyrights and trademarks, something you obviously know nothing about, as a trademark means an author has the rights to any characters, titles, etc that he or she has created. Therefore the author holds any and all rights to those titles. So if you were to create a game using the name of an existing accessible game I'd legally be obligated to ban you from the list. Its not personal, but a matter of legalities here. So stop thinking of steeling other people's titles and go create something of your own. Cheers! Oh absolutely and definitively not. This is very very wrong and you could face legal ramifications for doing this. Re: [Audyssey] should I steal these titles?
Hi, Let me put here my two cents as I get tired of near-to-nonsense content by some people. On one hand we have here a possibility of a litteral translation of a metaphor. To steal, in some languages, can be used as a metaphor for to take, just to make the meaning stronger, so if we assume that Ishan, for whom I don't know what his mother tongue is, wanted to express himself with a metaphor like that, then the question is nonsense because, if you take something from someone, change something here and there, that's anyway not your product, and therefore there is no metaphor in your word! If he really thaught to steal a product because of his lack of ideas, money, etc, trying before that to get sympathies of developers by making accusations like he did, there is an appropriate proverb in Serbia which, when translated in english says (excuse my strong language here): whatever others talk about, a bich talks about honor. I don't want to offend anyone, the subject of the proverb is only metaphoric! Besides, regardless of whether or not you use someone else's music, sounds and story ideas it's corny at best, not to mention lazy, to take the title of an existing game and use it for your own. Re: [Audyssey] should I steal these titles?
Hi Milos, That idea occurred to me as well. Ishan is from India, and it occurred to me we might be experiencing a language translation issue. He might have said steel when he meant to say take, to use, or to borrow which would put things in a slightly different context. Still, it is never a good idea to use someone else's game titles etc in your own works. Cheers! On 10/2/14, Milos Przic milos.pr...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, Let me put here my two cents as I get tired of near-to-nonsense content by some people. Re: [Audyssey] should I steal these titles?
Hi Danielle, I doubt Ishan would go to jail over it, but he could be sued. Copyright law isn't the same as criminal law, and as far as I know nobody has spent time in jail for illegally using someone else's ideas, game titles, etc. However, as I said someone can end up paying lots of money if they get sued. Re: [Audyssey] should I steal these titles?
Hi Charles, Ishan isn't a child, so to speak, but he sometimes acts like it. I really have to wonder by him asking a question like this what his maturity level is, or if it is a case of using the wrong word for what he meant to say. In either case it was really inappropriate to pose such a question since most people older than three know steeling is wrong. Cheers! Hi Ishan, Absolutely not. It is unethical to take someone else's ideas, the name of a game, etc and try and sell it as your own creation. The fact you recognize it as steeling should tell you that it is unethical, and that you don't really have a right to do this legally or ethically. For one thing there is international and national copyright laws that protect a developer's right to his or her ideas and creations. If you create a new game called Super Liam using Liam's sounds, music, game characters, etc you can legally be sued for copyright infringement. The only way around this is to get permission from the copyright holder, and usually that may involve some sort of contract where you pay him/her a certain amount of money to use their trademarks. Copyright law not withstanding there is a question of ethics here too. If a developer be it Liam, Philip, etc creates a game what right do you have to just take their sounds, music, game ideas, etc and rewrite it, and sell it as your own work. That's not the same as walking into a store and steeling something, but it is still theft of someone else's property. Steeling is still steeling and most people consider steeling an unethical practice.
