Re: [Audyssey] unable to run Rail Racer Demo on windows8
I've seen a lot of conflicting info on this. I read an MS article that said implisitly Win8 won't run .net 1 apps and that you need to contact the application vendor so they get it up to date, but the link to the .net package thomas posted a few days back works just fine, apart from the program compatibility assistant popping up to say it has known issues. But I was able to install it and play rail racer on windows 8 with no problems. On 2013-04-16 17:19, Thomas Ward wrote: Hi Dallas, Thanks for the information. Re: [Audyssey] unable to run Rail Racer Demo on windows8
well there are many ways you can handle licences. with dolphin stuff you can put as many as you want. you start with 3 licences but you need to wait every 6 month for either your keys to reset or a licence to generate so yeah you will always have coppies but you just have to wait. the bsc one is the same 4 keys, wait a year and then another 4 keys. fs has a simuolar one though they need to reset manually and will actually investigate if you go to far. dvd audio extracter has 1 licence configured to 1 machine but you can move this round and as long as you have 1 unit licenced with a licence file though I have not tried it in theory you could continously move it round or buy another licence whic would actually stay online. On the ms front I aggree with. in theory as long as you are carefull you can use your key more than once but just don't use the same key on millions of boxes. There are loads of ways to handle it. There are sinble key registrations then there is the obvious demo and full game seperated different expiring downloads or just on cd. ok it would still get distributed but hmmm. Most of my software though is freeware or opensource. I have several comercial programs, windows an old version of office, my games, but the rest is free or opensourced with a couple acceptions but thats mainly because I have not found legal programs to replace them with or had the cash to buy them yet which I will eventually do. I'd want to be able to have a copy for at least one of my laptops as well as a key for my desktop. If I can't do that then I'll probably say forget it. Re: [Audyssey] unable to run Rail Racer Demo on windows8
Hi Shaun, As I said there was a number of major changes made between 1.1 and 2.0. Those changes introduced compatibility issues between 1.x and 2.0 .NET applications. As it happens newer .NET Frameworks like 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, and 5.0 come with backward compatible libraries for .NET 2.0 and later but have no backward compatible libraries for 1.0 and 1.1. The .NET 1.x libraries are deprecated and so were removed from the .NET Framework and .NET developers are expected to update their code to reflect this change accordingly. However, in principle the .NET Framework is suppose to provide developers with a write once run anywhere solution by targeting the .NET Framework rather than any specific Windows platform. If You write a .NET 4.0 application on a Windows 7 system it should run fine on older systems running Windows XP and Vista that have .NET 4.0 installed, various mobile phones, and of course is forward compatible with Windows 8. While in principle that is suppose to be how it works I've encountered cases where it does not really work out that way. For example, 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility issues. By default .NET apps are compiled using the Any CPU flag. This usually works most of the time, but if you include 32-bit libraries in a .NET app and try to run it on a 64-bit OS it will crash. Same if you include a 64-bit library in a .NET app and try to run it on a 32-bit system. It will blow up big time. The solution for those sorts of problems is to specifically target the .NET platform such as x86 or x64 so that your .NET app will initialize the proper runtime environment and compatibility libraries rather than choose the default for the system. All I am saying is while Microsoft has tried to make .NET into a write once run everywhere solution sometimes things go wrong and it doesn't quite work out that way. Not all .NET apps are compatible with every version of the .NET Framework, and it is up to the developer to resolve those compatibility issues.. Most of the time compatibility issues are due to error on the .NET developers part such as using the Any CPU flag when x86 was required for compatibility reasons, or the app was built using some now deprecated library or API that was removed from the framework. Cheers! On 4/12/13, shaun everiss sm.ever...@gmail.com wrote: isn't all dotnets compatible with all lower versions? dotnet 5 4 and 3 are compatible with 2 and 1? Technically you could hack them to be as secure as they should be but hmmm. and if you have iis then 1.1 may or may not work anyway. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] unable to run Rail Racer Demo on windows8
Hi Shaun, Yes and no. In theory any .NET 2.0 application will run on .NET 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, or 5.0 because the .NET Framework is .NET 2.0 backward compatible. The problem is that .NET 1.1 and 1.0 are deprecated, and there was a major change from 1.x to 2.0 which introduces some backward compatibility issues when a 1.x app tries to use a newer version of the .NET Framework. So in some cases it will work and in others it won't. So while .NET is usually backward compatible you can't always count on that for .NET 1.x stuff. Although, with Rail Racer I have gotten it to run on Windows 7 without running the .NET 1.1 installer. Its just the licensing tool won't work. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] unable to run Rail Racer Demo on windows8
Hi Trouble, Yes, exactly. Its not a lot of work porting a game from .NET 1.1 to say .NET 2.0, 3.0, or 4.0. However, given the fact that we now have Windows 8 and .NET 5 out already a developer really needs to continue to upgrade his or her code to keep in line with the technology of today and not continue to be using APIs and libraries from 10 years ago. I don't know if people realize this fact, but .NET 1.0 was released in 2002 and the 1.1 update was released in 2003. Generally speaking Microsoft has a limit of 10 years support on a specific technology, and we are now at that point so I'm not surprised .NET 1.x will not operate on Windows 8. We've already reached the 10 year support limit and .NET 2.0 will be 10 years in 2015. Its important to stay up to date when you are a developer as these technologies are updated and replaced fairly regularly and after 10 years they get taken out of circulation. Any products still based on the older technology will begin to run into compatibility issues with newer and better operating systems and technologies. Cheers! Hi Lenron, That is probably the best option. I know Che is beta testing a new 2.0 version of Rail Racer so perhaps waiting until it comes out is the best decision rather than messing with the older 1.x versions. Now, as to installing DirectX did you try the web setup or the full installer. It might make a big difference which you tried downloading and installing. Cheers! isn't all dotnets compatible with all lower versions? dotnet 5 4 and 3 are compatible with 2 and 1? I thought that was the idea. you can't update 1.1 on anything over vista or 2.0 3.0. if you have outdated frameworks then they are not secure. don't hold your breath. I own a coppy but am unsure if I should write che off as bad or not. it was 1 key for each system which made a licence file. that server was not always up and people coppied them, che then made basically everyone have to buy the game again to get another key. I never got the game by paying as I tested it so I am not going to go and get a crack for it. But to say I am dissapointed that I have a game that I can't play really is an understatement. The only reason I don't even bother is that there are loads of games better than rr in its current thing is. Now if che does in fact end up releasing his game again, with a new system, one that will allow you to move your licence round or at least replace them without having to rebuy maybe something bsc uses with 4 keys per year or something then fine I will go back. Re: [Audyssey] unable to run Rail Racer Demo on windows8
I don't think that matters tom the licence server has been down for ages now. it has never been that stable and as it was now che is rewriting it well. You can actually play if you have a key and don't register but you can't run any online anything though. At 01:09 AM 4/13/2013, you wrote: Hi Shaun, Yes and no. Cheers! On that note I wouldn't even bother about railracer. 1.1 is a total pile, the activation system has been changed and that system is down. worse only 1 file per unit licence and 1 machine you get another or lost it you had to buy another code another 40 bucks I think at the time because people hacked the code. Re: [Audyssey] unable to run Rail Racer Demo on windows8
Hi Austin, Yes, you still need to install .NET 1.1 for Rail Racer, because it requires that specific version of the framework to run certain components. The reason is that .NET 2.x, 3.x, and 4.0 are not version 1.0 and 1.1 backwards compatible with some components. Hopefully when Che is done upgrading Rail Racer he will be updating to a newer .NET Framework. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] unable to run Rail Racer Demo on windows8
Hi Austin, Managed DirectX is a component of DirectX 9, but does not ship with XP, Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 by default because it is now deprecated. It was replaced in 2007 with the XNA Framework, but games like Rail Racer sadly are still using the older out of date managed libraries for .NET. Cheers!
