[Audyssey] games created with b.g.t.
hi all, how can we seriously make our own games with b.g.t. half the ideas ahve probably already been used and copyrighted so aren't we stuck? We can't even do our own spinoffs like classics such as sonic etc. so what's point? Half the ideas most of us will ahve are probably based on games we have seen our sighted family or friends playing william lomas follow me on twitter: billbow_baggins --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] games created with b.g.t.
Hi Will, There is certainly a point in making games. The general ideas are not copyrighted, it's the trademarks that are. You could make a game about a man swinging a glowing sword at robots, but if the man just happened to be called Luke Skywalker or the robot was R2D2, then you'd be in trouble. In short, there is a distinction between bare ideas and trademarks/copyrighted material. You can certainly make spin-offs of old games, but you have to come up with your own ideas for the surrounding content. You can make a Super Mario clone, but you can't call it Super Mario and you can't use the characters from the original game etc or use any sound effects from any existing title on the market. We may not be able to use copyrighted characters and things but we can still make games based on the same style of game as what we've seen others play. We could use the ideas of these games, just not the names. We have to add different concepts. Re: [Audyssey] games created with b.g.t.
Hi William, It really comes down to being creative. If you absolutely must base your game off of something you know then do it in a way that doesn't infringe upon an existing copyright. Here is an example. You all know I love Tomb Raider. Those games are among my favorites. However, I can't just exactly rip the sounds and music, and use Lara Croft because those are copyrighted by Edos interactive. The way I got around that restriction is by changing the name of Tomb Raider to Tomb Hunter, and created my own character called Angela Carter. In Mysteries of the Ancients you are doing much the same things as in Tomb Raider, but it doesn't infringe upon any copyrights and is legally a separate game. Edos Interactive doesn't have an exclusive ownership on that type of game just the sounds, characters, etc under the Tomb Raider trademark. You see how that works? Now, obviously some games are harder than others to create. Star Wars is pretty specific and can't easily be watered down to a generic game the way Tomb Raider or Indiana Jones can. However, if you look at it many games can be cloned in such a way that doesn't infringe upon any copyright. Aliens in the Outback, Troopenum, etc are all enspired of Space Invaders but are also very quite unique. DynaMan was enspired by Packman, but is also unique in its own right. Shades of Doom was enspired by Doom, but also is unique and not exactly Doom per say. So it can be done. You just need to learn where the legal lines are and avoid them by changing this or that to suit the legal requirements. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] games created with b.g.t.
Hi, Exactly. You can get away with a lot by changing names, character back stories, etc but otherwise the same general concept. Let's face it Castlevania is pretty generic right? There isn't anything special about skeletons, zombies, vampires, bats, whatever. So what change the name of the character from Simon Belmont to Joe Smith and Castlevania to Castle Dracula or something. C'mon it isn't hard to skirt the law if you know how. Re: [Audyssey] games created with b.g.t.
Hi William. first, as I said, i really see nno issue with freeware remakes (there are enough graffical ones). Second, well, having game ideas is part of the design process. Myself, I have longed to write a textual rpg game like Sryth for years, and have several ideas which i hope will be able to create an interesting and highly playable game which avoids all the issues of others I've seen. some ideas are entirely mine uniquely. Others, are similar to games like fallthru, Sryth gamebooks, and the mutants and masterminds roleplay system, but hopefully the way i intend to put them together is unique and will produce my own creation. so in short, be! creative! ;D. Ps, I'm not saying any of my ideas are good, we'll just have to see when I've hopefully learnt enough code to put at least some of them into practice. Re: [Audyssey] games created with b.g.t.
Pluss of course, there is the chance to write a better game concept. Just as an example, the original double dragon featured a grand total of five possible enemies, (one of whome was the last boss). if you wanted to write a double dragon remake, well, you'd either have to change it a lot (much as double dragon on the Gba was changed), to include many extra enemies, or just grit your teeth and say this is an accurate remake Some retro remakes I've seen of graffical games have indeed done just that. If however, you are writing your own walk along beat em up about two martial artists, well you can stick in as many and as varied bad guys as you wish! Beware the grue!
