Hi, When you say, "you have Windows XP because you hate anything later than that," does this include Windows 7? Have you tried Windows 7? If so let us know why you hate it? If not how can you judge? I'm not trying to be sarcastic, rude, etc, but I just wanted to illustrate the point if you mean Windows Vista please be specific here. I've got the Windows 7 beta running on a notebook and I like it lots better than Windows Vista. Better security, a fully customizable user account control, improved system performance, a better driver database, etc are just some of the features you get when updating Vista to Windows 7. Oh, and the fact that Windows 7 is in beta, and is quite stable, means that Windows 7 is likely to be the next Windows XP for most users running newer systems. My advice for users is skip Vista and go Windows 7 when Windows 7 comes out. Constantine wrote: I've got reasonably well up to date. Hi. the games will run on windows 7 I'm farely sure. All you have to do is install a game that installs the vb6 runtime with it, such as GMA Tank Commander, and boom windows 7 supports it like vista does. Re: [Audyssey] Rail Racing for speed junkies. was:Re: Would you pay$50for a killer controller?
Hi Jim, I'm not sure of the exact version of Windows XP you have, but this is what I have personally noticed. If you take Windows XP, with SP2 already installed, and don't put a lot of other third-party applications on it it will run great for a long time. The second you begin adding all kinds of third-party apps like anti-virus programs, office sweits, games, etc there is a risk you will break something. For example, MS Sapi 5. I can't tell you how many times if I left Sapi alone, the stock sapi voices that come with XP/Vista, it never breaks. If I install some third-party voice, like Cepstral voices, remove them my Sapi 5 will wind up broken, and then I have to fix it. That has happened to me a couple of times, and I've learned there are some voices if you install them, don't remove them, or Sapi will end up busted afterward. So I do agree with you to a point that you must be careful what you add, and what updates you install. On the other hand some updates such as .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.0 are proven, stable, reliable technologies that power many new applications for XP, Vista, and Windows 7. Since Windows Vista the .NET Framework is a core component of the Windows OS, and a lot of programs for Windows Vista and Windows 7 are built using the .NET Framework. Even the XBox 360 uses the .NET Framework as well as the latest Windows Mobile releases. My point being is if you are afraid of installing the .NET Framework you are likely to miss out on any new games, word processors, etc that are designed for .NET enabled computers. I know you love racing, and USA Raceway, a game you might be interested in, just happens to use .NET Framework 3.5 and DirectX 9.0C (June 2008.) Smile. Hi Jim, In all fairness, hard drive crashes are hardware errors. The fact that you haven't had one is probably just statistical luck. Out of the box XP (or any Windows in recent memory) is far worse stability wise than a fully updated one. That said, I completely agree with "if it isn't broke, don't fix it". Re: [Audyssey] Rail Racing for speed junkies. was:Re: Would you pay $50for a killer controller?
Hi Jim, Other than the fact .NET Framework 1.1 creates an extra user acccount you can delete I don't foresee any problems installing the .NET Framework. The .NET Framework is just a set of libraries that run C-Sharp and Visual Basic 2003, 2005, and 2008 applications. I've sold about 200 copies of Montezuma's Revenge and at no time have I gotten any tech support e-mails about .NET Framework 3.0 or 3.5. When I released STFC, which initially was built for .NET Framework 1.1, I did get a few tech support issues about that extra user account 1.1 adds. They would restart and got a login screen and wanted it turned off. Simply deleting the .NET account it created solved the problem. To date that is the only issue I've heard of. As for your issue with updating Windows in general I am a bit mystified as to the problem. Generally installing service packs are a good thing. They fix all sorts of nasty bugs, fix critical security issues, and generally make Windos more stable not less so. I've got Service Pack 3 on XP and it runs great on XP. XP with Service Pack 3 is several times more stable than Windows Xp without any service packs. Anyway, not trying to convert you here. Just commenting as to the fact updating your system shuldn't be causing you grief. Windows Update and Windows service packs are meant to be easy and painless to install for both technically and not so technically minded computer users. Smile. Hi Jim, Actually I sent you the full version download and a license file, I checked my records to make sure that was the case, so yer all set for the full experience. As for installing .net framework and updating to direct x latest version, I've sold around 360 copies of rail racer, all those computers must have .net framework 1.1 and direct x installed, and none of them had any probems with the components. The only trouble I've had with any installs were sapi issues where third party sapi voices weren't playing nice. the frameworks and direct x stuff are basically extentions of windows, so the chances of them messing anything up in and of themselves is almost nil. I offered several game developers on list here copies of the game, and I remember specifically sending you a free key way back, in partial payment for all the fun I've had with your games. Rail racer isn't a standard racing game in that you must do jumps, avoid force fields and the like, but the essence of high speed racing is maintained throughout, as I too am a racing junkie from way back. Come join us man, you don't know what you're missing. later che - Original Message - From: "Jim Kitchen" To: "Che" Sent: Thursday, January 29, 2009 9:02 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Would you pay $50 for a killer controller? Hi Che, Well I paid $100 for a steering wheel joystick. Right now I am very happy that I did. Mach 1 tts is really fun to drive with the variable input of the steering wheel, gas peddle and brake peddle. Plus all of the handy buttons for speaking information. I am just really into car racing and driving. Ok though, I would want to know that a game is fully accessible and that it is a game that I would really be into before I spent $50 for a controller just for it. Re: [Audyssey] Rail Racing for speed junkies. was:Re: Would you pay $50for a killer controller?
Hi Che, Yes, I remember that you sent me a demo of Rail Racer. Truthfully I have not tried it. I never installed any net framework on either of my computers. This one might have it though. So I might have to try installing the game. I do not up date my computers with the newest Microsoft stuff because it always has screwed them up and I then have to turn the computer back to before I did the up date.
