Hi. You could use adrift from www.adrift.org.uk. Version 3.9 is free,
and 4.0 is not, but 4.0 is well worth it. I'm currently writing the two
games I'm working on using Adrift and it's super speech friendly and you
don't need to know programming. I don't like the way it handles some
things by default, so I'm doing some pretty fancy stuff to make my game
work better.

ari said the following on 3/2/2008 3:17 AM:
 Hi all,
I remember asking this ages ago, and someone suggested that, without any
knowledge of programming, you could use inform to write a text adventure,
but that it wasn't too great for screen readers. What I want to know is,
even using programming, what's the most accessible package to write text
adventures in, and what's the difference between them. If you also don't
know programming, isn't there maybe an quickstart guide somewhere for a text
 adventure writer?
 Thanks

Re: [Audyssey] writing a text adventure

2008-03-02 Thread robjoy
Hello Ari et all,
Inform 7, at least with jfw, is mostly accessible. It has two windows,
the coding area where you actually enter your story mostly in full
english sentences, and the second window is the viewer, where the
program displays it's messages like compile status, errors, help pages,
examples, etc.
Features like the built in inform interpreter, skein, keywords list are
not accessible, but to write your code, to compile and see the errors
it's perfect. You can test your story with an external interpreter, like
Zoom for the mac, frotz, etc.
Inform 7 has an excellent help system, with many many examples and
because the mode you're writing your stories is almost like natural
english, it is extremely easy to learn and use. It's portable, there are
interpreters for windows, linux, mac, even for pacmates.
I've tried lots of if authoring systems which are programming-based, but
since almost every one uses a c-syntax, i did not like them. There is
one however, called JACL, which is extremely easy to learn if you have
basic programming skills (no matter in which language). It is not that
popular, in fact, the author told me i am the only person using it at
the moment, but i hope that will change soon.
It runs on linux, can run on windows under cygwin, and probably on the
mac too.
I say, if you want to write stories easily and you don't know how to
program, go for inform. If you do know, go for JACL, it's much easier
than tads, inform 6 or others.
You can download the Inform 7 environment at:
http://www.inform-fiction.org
and you can get JACL at:
http://jacl.sf.net

Hello,
Indeed, blind programming has changed a lot. I don't think so you would
find any good IF-related article, or anything regarding IF on it though.
There is an IF demo, called Cloak. It's like the Hello world in
programming, a very basic story with 3 rooms, 2 objects and a simple
puzzle to solve. On jacl.sf.net you can find the implementation in JACL
format, and also you will find other implementations, like in hugo,
alan, inform 6 and 7, tads, etc. You can check it out and see which IF
authoring system is good for you.

tried Alan and what is it like? I'm asking because I also like it's
interface when playing games. I'll try inform and see what happens, but is
there a guide for beginners? I know even for programming, Tom talks about
Safari, but I wanted to also look on blindprogramming, and, I don't know if
it's just me, but the site seems totally weird! I remember in the old days
there were tutorials and stuff, but now there's this weird login screen
which doesn't even seem to have anything to do with blindprogramming anyway!

Hi Rob and Trouble, thanks for these, just one other question, have you guys
tried Alan and what is it like? I'm asking because I also like it's
interface when playing games. I'll try inform and see what happens, but is
there a guide for beginners? I know even for programming, Tom talks about
Safari, but I wanted to also look on blindprogramming, and, I don't know if
it's just me, but the site seems totally weird! I remember in the old days
there were tutorials and stuff, but now there's this weird login screen
which doesn't even seem to have anything to do with blindprogramming anyway!

Hi, it seems that blindprograming is switching to using Drupal, a content
management system, on their site, so the log in form on the site is not for
the site itself, rather the drupal cms system.

Hi James,
Are you saying that blindprogramming doesn't exist anymore? What does this
droople login mean, what would happen if I registered for it?
Thanks
Ari
